The ways of communication have drastically changed over the years. Historically, he only way to communicate was to write a letter, which usually took a while to get where it was going. Then, technology started to grow with the invention of the telephone in 1876. Technology continued to rise with the computer being invented around 1936 which then brought us emailing in the 1970’s. With the rise of computer technology and finding faster ways for people to communicate, social media and networking were born. Social media is a way for people to interact with each other, share photos online and exchange thoughts or ideas about something. For instance, people are drawn towards groups of people with the same opinion. A problem arises when one person in the group disagrees with another member, sides are taken which results in someone becoming excluded. This type of social peer pressure can be detrimental to friendships and results in people becoming less tolerant of others opinions. Another downside to constantly communicating on Facebook is that people are losing their social skills. Adults and children are becoming incapable of holding a normal conversation and interacting with another person in person. Why is this? It’s due to that fact so much interaction is online; people are starting to not interact face-to-face as much. This is a serious concern with the younger generation and what’s to come when they grow up. Communication cannot solely take place online; it is so important to learn and retain social skills. “We are more often communicating with people through a screen and the written word than chatting face to face with others. People are seen sitting by themselves with their heads bowed looking at their phones or computers. We also see people sitting together but doing the same thing, acting like they weren’t even there with each other. Some believe these interactions are causing our generation to lose valuable social skills that help us communicate with one another” (Clark). Social media like Facebook is quickly reducing people’s
Nowadays, the communications with others are different from the traditional ways and normal rules. People take advantage of new technology to communicate instead of face to face. Although the email and text message make people easy to communicate, the society
People do not realize the immense impact social media has on their lives. Social media first impacted people’s lives with the invention of the telephone in 1890. Following this, the radio entered many homes in 1891; this was the beginning of social media. During the twentieth century, computers and the Internet began the modern rise of today’s social media. UseNet, in 1979 was a virtual newsletter, which began what people think today of as modern social media. When home computers became popular during the 1980s, such sites as relay chats took off. Then, in 1997, the first true social media site , Six Degrees, came about: “It enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. In 1999, the first blogging sites became popular, creating a social media sensation that’s still popular today” ( “Complete History of Social Media: Than and Now”). Although social media has some positive effects, social media has changed the world for the worse because it negatively affects politics, privacy, and bullying.
discusses how communication has grown and developed into new ways to interact with each other. Social media, blogs, and mobile phones are a few of the ways that we can connect and be in contact with each other. Information that may have taken days to reach an out of state friend through a letter just a few decades ago can now be sent and received in a matter of minutes through email or text messaging.
Throughout the years people have been given the privilege of interpersonal communication in many forms, such as letters, emails, texts, and social media. Letters were one of the very first mediums people used to communicate, and as the years went by technology improved, and emails were created. Emails served as a faster alternative for people in a business to contact someone else. Following that was the idea of text messaging, not only was it time efficient but also easier. That wasn’t the only thing connecting people all around the world though. When technological advancement began so did the growth of social networking. Social networking became easier with the innovation of smartphones, by making social media more accessible than its initial phases. However, in social networking’s earliest stages social media sites were created with the purpose of helping people stay linked together despite the distance separating each other. During that time, the only means of using these networking sites were by having access to a computer. Without the easy accessibility to computers, people back then could carry on with everyday life tasks without social networking distracting us from the life around us. Despite social media not fully taking off until the booming of mobile devices, the earliest known form of social media is believed to have been created in 1995 by way of Classmates.com. Eventually being followed by networks such as Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest (Social Media). Unfortunately networking quickly changed in the 2010s when smartphones became more common and social media sites began to release their products as mobile applications or apps (Social Media). In this day and age in which some school-age children are gifted mobile devices almost everyone can get their hands on social media. It has become so easy to stay communicated by means of these social media apps that we are starting to forget how to interact among each other. We are moving away from face to face
Writing on the Wall by Tom Standage focuses on different forms of social media and how it has changed to benefit society throughout the past 2,000 years. Standage defines social media as a community that is brought together by shared information and passed along to different social connections. Social media may not have been in the same form as we are used to nowadays, but it has been around for centuries. In some ways, you may not realize that daily activities are forms of spreading information. People like the idea of social media because as humans, we like interacting with other people. Throughout the years, we’ve learned how to transition from oral communication to a written language. The discoveries changed how people view communication for the better.
Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Instagram, and Flicker was invented to keep us in touch and keep us closer to our family and friends. But according to How Facebook ruins Friendships “we took our friendship online” (Bernstein). First we began communicating more by email than by phone and then switched to instant messaging or texting. By joining social Medias online

In the world we live in today, people have the opportunity to interact with one another due to the advancement in technology. For many years people relied on the traditional ways of communications, for example pay phones, send letters, a house phone, in person and they even used web cam’s. Throughout the last decade, social media has drastically changed the way people interact with others. Websites like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have taken the world by storm. It has never been easier to have a conversation with family members, friends, or even strangers who live millions of miles away. Due to the rise of social media, people have become more aware of social issues and have become aware of the world around them. Facebook, a social networking website, has changed the way people communicate with each other. A social networking website is an online platform that allows users to create a public profile and interact with other users on the website. Facebook has even changed our most personal and private conversations and how they are conducted around the world. Since the internet’s birth in 1983, this trend of online communication has been growing. Created in 2004, now registered with more than one billion participants, Facebook’s user numbers surpass even the top four social networking websites combined. According to Wikipedia statistics, Instagram has 300 million registered users, LinkedIn has 200 million users, Classmates.com has 50 million users, and Flickr has 32 million registered users. To be further convinced of the claim that Facebook indeed changes the way we communicate, you would only need to create your own Facebook account and start participating in their social networking experience. Technology and internet usage is fused into every aspect of our society including the style of communication. The launch of Facebook in 2006 also enabled other devices such as touch phones, interactive tablets, and even advanced cars with their own networking capabilities starting in 2007. Facebook is a multibillion-dollar company and is highly recognized for connecting more people than other networks. Facebook’s long-term success can be attributed to providing entertainment, world news, and
