Railroad Crossings are places where locomotives cross a public road. You should slow down when you approach a railroad crossing. You should not pass a car that is going your direction at the railroad crossing. You should not park closer than 50 feet from a railroad, unless there are signs saying otherwise. Don’t stop at a crossing if you are not 15 - 50 feet from the nearest rail. When you come up on a railroad crossing you should turn down the radio so that you can hear the train horn when it approaches. You should treat every railroad crossing like a train is coming and pay attention. At night it is also important to slow down and check both ways. School buses have the same rules applied, they must come to a complete stop, look both ways and go on when it is safe to do so. Some things you should remember about railroad tracks is that you should always think that a train is coming because most trains don’t have an official schedule. If your vehicle stalls on the tracks you should get everyone out of the car, notify the authorities, and run toward the train where you won’t be hit by it. There can always be a second train after the first one passes. If there are gates down you should never go around them because that generally means there is a train coming. Don’t ever try and race a train to the crossing point. You should be aware of trains at night as well. All train tracks are private property so you should never walk on them, first of all because it is private property and second of all you have the possibility of being hit by the train.
