School shootings are some of the worst shootings to be happening in the world. We have not came to a “solution” on solving the school shooting. There is no logical explanation for the shootings that keep happening. To me the world is not doing anything at all to stop these shootings. There was just a shooting in Florida, the shooter only got a sentence of two years, yet he killed 17 people. He is a murderer. 17 innocent people lost their lives because a young dumb kid came into school and shot the place up. The real question is how do you let a kid into school with a gun? How do you miss seeing a huge gun in someone’s bag when coming in school. Is your security really bad enough that you miss that? I don’t feel safe in school because you
For over a decade, There has been an alarming rate of gun violence in schools from middle schools to college and many people have debated on how to stop this. Currently, it has been proposed that in order to combat school shootings, teachers should be armed with guns of their own. Although in some ways it may sound like a good idea, this is not an idea that would eliminate the issue nor make classrooms feel any safer. According to an article in the huffington post, they make it apparent to remind people that kids know how to get their hands on anything if they desired it bad enough. “ask your mother” Ken Corbett, author of the article states, “Better yet, recall how you knew where she hid the Christmas presents. Or where your father kept his
In order to solve the problem of violence in schools, we must first find out who the problem is. Being that not every teenager is prone to participate in such violent acts as what happened at Columbine, there must be specific environment imposed on a particular biology to turn a teenager into an Eric Harris or a Dylan Klebold. These are not normal, healthy teenagers, and they don’t just become killers overnight. They become killers because they are already deeply disturbed individuals who can be sent over the edge by all sorts of innocuous influences. Violent teens often have specific characteristics that put them at high risk for committing these crimes. These high risked students may display some of the following traits. First,
Numerous studies have been conducted to determine if teachers should be in possession of a firearm while on school properties and if this will decrease the number and magnitude of school shootings. Many scholars believe equipping teachers with firearms will be costly and end up unnecessarily endangering more students, but many scholars claim that a teacher should be the last line of defense against a school shooter. The question this paper hopes to answer is how can equipping teachers who teach grades K-12 help to prevent school shootings in the United States. This paper will attempt to answer that question by examining the perspectives of school administration and law enforcement, the impact on student’s safety and education, the
A method of preventing school shootings would be to acknowledge risk factors that the student is facing. For example, bullying is a risk factor for school shootings. In a research study done in 2001 of 37 school shootings, it was reported that 75% of the school shooters felt bullied, threatened, or injured by others in which most of the shooters in the report had experienced long-term bullying and harassment from their peers (Duplechain & Morris, 2014). In addition, the authors do state: “School personnel too often accept that children get teased and bullied every day, because teachers, parents, students, and other adults have grown up thinking that bullying is a normal part of school life. It has easily become an accepted part of today’s school culture” (Ibid, 2014). The authors believe that schools view bullying as something that students should get used to. This does show how bullying is an issue in schools. It is not solely to blame in regards to school shootings, but is a risk factor for them.
More than 270 gun sightings have been reported in schools in the year of 2016 (Mascia). Overall, more than fifty million kids walk into school with firearms everyday, but nobody knows about it. Why? Because most school officials do not have enough rights to search through students’ belongings if they have suspicion about something. Schools should have the right to search students’ belongings because of behavior, ownership, and safety.
Mass shootings have become one of the most fearful events that could happen in elementary schools, high schools, and College campuses. These violent actions committed by a number of individuals have happened for many years and will continue happening unless prevented. Individuals like James Holmes opened fire in a Colorado movie theater, killing twelve individuals and injuring twenty, John Sawahri shot five students dead in Santa Monica College also injuring four individuals. However Eric Harris and Dylan Kleibold executed the most horrific act of school violence in United States History. These two individuals managed to take the lives of twelve students, a teacher and managed to take their own life in the process. This act of crime has spread through America, leaving no one safe.
School shootings are terrifying to think about, but there are ways to help prevent the massacres from ever happening again. The first known school shooting was at the Texas Tower at the University of Texas in 1966 where Charles Whitman shot and killed 16 people while injuring 31 others. Who would have known since that date that we would have more then 200 deaths on school campuses? The most storied shooting in the 90’s was probably the Columbine massacre where on April 20, 1999 Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 32 students and faculty before turning the guns on themselves. The horror scene from the day will always be remembered in many lives and will continue over the years. There were many other horrible shootings over the years as
Since 2010 there have been thirty-one school shootings in the United States alone (Black). In this past year, the year of 2013, there have already been 8 school shootings in the USA (Black). Eight school shootings in one month. That number is outrageous and not healthy for our students to have the best learning experience. No student deserves to go to school fearing that they may fall victim to violence at their school. I believe that our schools can be made safer by a law being written that teachers should be allowed to carry concealed firearms in school. It is best for teachers to carry firearms to school because it will provide safety to
Since 2013, there have been 175 school shootings in America. That is such a horrible number to hear. There's been so much activity on school shooting that it doesn't come as a shock when one happens. As Obama said after the shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, where a gunman went on a rampage and murdered at least 10 people, “ Somehow this has become a routine.” All shooters have a motive and it has to do with their life at home, how they were treated at school, and how their mental health is.
Due to the significant number of violent shootings on college campuses in the past recent years, many have argued that both students and teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed handgun on campus to defend themselves. They believe it will help stop shootings and make campuses safer, but will it? These people who are suggesting this are only thinking about their own safety and not thinking about the consequences that will flourish due to guns on campus. Guns on campus would not only lead to an escalation in violent crimes, but will lead to an increase in the number of incidents. Allowing people to bring guns on college campuses won’t solve anything; instead we should be limiting the amount of weapons to make it a safer environment for both students and teachers.
Within 10 years, massive shooting seems to become more and more common and hot topic across the news, especially school massive shooting. According to CNN.com, “Columbine Shootings leave 39 dead or injured” (April, 1999), “Massacre at Virginia Tech leaves 32 dead” (April, 2007), “Twenty children among twenty-eight killed in an elementary massive shooting in Connecticut” (December, 2012), etc., similar tragedies repeated over the headlines across different newspaper and websites. School massive shooting is a severe social catastrophe, if we don’t solve this problem as soon as possible, it will threat the whole nation. The cause of these tragedies is controversial and various, but mainly caused by bullying, rejection from school, and mental
As anyone in the nation knows mass shootings are becoming more common and are becoming very predictable. In fact stats from the Crime Prevention Research Center show that over 98% of mass shootings happen in schools that are gun free zones from 1950 to july 10 of 2016. Although Nebraska has not had any reported mass shooting there has been one that took place in the parking lot of fort calhoun elementary school. We should be prepared to defend what place would most likely to be put in a shooting situation.
Teachers can get a carrying a concealed weapon (CCW) permit and it would be legal for them to have their weapon on school grounds as long as it is concealed (Contributor). All teachers who are armed complete several safety classes and force on force training to allow them to be prepared in case a real shooting occurred (Contributor). With this permit and being able to carry and loaded weapon, it does not only allow the person to protect themselves but also the others surrounding them. A student should be able to come to school without the fear of being harmed and not being protected by the school’s
In 1994, two hundred million people own a gun privately, but today its between two hundred seventy and three hundred million people own guns. There have been more than ten firearms deaths per 100,000 people a year. "In 90% of gun crimes, the firearms has changed at least once since the original sale" (Bennet, 3). The topic of gun control can prevent school shootings have a history to consider, and there will always be both supporters and critics who continue to debate this topic.
It's is a well known fact that kids bring weapons into school. They might just want to show off their dad's new hunting knife or their mom's gun they keep in her purse. Everyone remembers the story of the kindergartener that brought a gun to school. A five-year-old boy from Albuquerque New Mexico was suspended from kindergarten after bringing a pellet gun to school. A teacher at Alameda Elementary School found the gun in the boy's bag after students mentioned he was showing it off. The pellet gun was not loaded. The boy was suspended for three days and school officials spoke with his parents about the incident. These kids might not want to hurt anyone; they most
