The texture of the canvas works very well with the subject matter portrayed in the painting. The strong ocean current and the cloudy mountain side are complimented by the canvas. It makes the waves seem like they’re moving against the ship. The ship is nicely detailed as well as the people in the painting. The brushstrokes are very clean and precise on the waves in the foreground. The brushstrokes do create a sense of movement in the painting. The surface of the artwork looks rough where the ocean is painted and where the clouds are painted it appears smooth and soft. This artwork is linear rather than painterly.

Then there are also many psychological lines to be seen in the work. One such line is of the woman and the floor, where she is staring down towards it. Another is from the young child and the store clerk, showing a defiance between the two. Next, light and value are not very contrasting in this painting, with only the basic highlights and the shadows seen. It isn’t completely contrasting or contradicting since the colors blend well together with close to the same value ranges, dark colors seen throughout except for the people’s pale faces. There also seems to be a variety of light sources since the woman’s face along with the shop clerk and the young boy’s is lit up by what seems to be a light bulb since they’re much brighter and highlighted and then the men and women in the back aren’t really as bright, except for the ones who close to the open door, creating a blue tinge from the outside light. The shapes shown through the painting is shown to be either very round or very geometrical. There are organic shapes in things such as the umbrella or even the back of the chair, but mostly it is either straight lines and geometrical shapes. Texture and pattern are very easy to identify in this painting. The street’s cobblestones show texture and pattern in the way that they are arranged. Texture is also demonstrated through the paint strokes on the buildings, the tree, and even the sky. These thick, uneven strokes add a layer of depth and texture to all elements of the painting.

Whether it be staying late at the batting cage, running those extra set of bleachers in the morning, going for that early morning jog, or going in and getting the extra lift in, “Just Do It” can be the trigger to any fire that motivates those to get up and start working on their goal. “Just Do It” can be a motivationally enforcing slogan because it is telling you just go do what it is that you want to do. Visual Rhetorical Rhetoric as theory allows the reader to analyze visual artifacts to produce a certain meaning that can be different to each individual. The theory can draw to attention otherization of people groups, how consumer culture in America can change poverty around the world, how southern culture can produce obesity and set bad morals for children, and create a call-to- action for the people. The texture of the painting itself is probably rough. The artist makes no great attempt at conveying implied texture to the viewer. It seems as though implying texture may detract from the overall attitude of the piece. Altogether texture doesn’t play a huge role in this work of art.

Next is the use of color, or lack thereof. The colors in the background are very quiet and muted, mostly subdued blues and grays with hints of a deep red and brownish yellow peeking though. The colors used for the figure are browns and tans, almost as if the was painted with mud, like she is all-natural and from the earth. The range of colors would seem to have a cool tone if you were looking at them on a painter’s palette but the arrangement of color on the canvas gives the piece a warm feeling.

The lines of the art piece are thin, structural and curved. The art is dark and dull but looks very realistic. Just looking at the piece it feels rough because it is like you are walking on top of rocks. You are looking at it from a top perspective so you can see bigger stones around the little pebbles.
