Visual Rhetorical Theory allows for readers to view a text in a specific light. Symbols, images, colors, fonts, etc. all can play into the overall meaning of a text. Visual Rhetorical Rhetoric as theory allows the reader to analyze visual artifacts to produce a certain meaning that can be different to each individual. The theory can draw to attention otherization of people groups, how consumer culture in America can change poverty around the world, how southern culture can produce obesity and set bad morals for children, and create a call-to- action for the people. Growing up, southerners are taught to be morally good and follow direction of their elders. One of the common televised and know practices is when parents say to their children “you are not getting up from this table until you clean your plate.” This one humorous and little statement has caused a dilemma. This commercial that Compassion aired completely obliterates the southern teaching. They are asking for people to give up meals and money to help fund these children. The southern culture has created bad habits that flow from generation to generation. Also, the south has the largest obesity rate in the nation. That statistic alone proves that southerners consume more than any other part of the country. These are the people that need to be targeted to give up meals, and money for Compassion International. Culture in the south takes food for granted and spends thousands upon thousands of dollars on food per year. The campaign urges people to just give $30 dollars a month to support a child. That is equivalent to not eating fast food as a family a couple of times a month, but the entitlement of the south is hard to break.
