Compare the social, political, and economic characteristics of societies that either inhibit or promote collective violence. How does violence affect society? Give specific examples.
Collective violence is almost an inevitable part of every society. It exists in different forms such as conflicts between nations, groups, group terrorism, and gang warfare. Everyday, thousands of people fall victims to these different forms of collective violence. Collective violence is defined as use of violence by people who associate themselves as members of a group against another group, in order to achieve political, economic or social objectives. Social, political and economic characteristics of a society play an important role in creating societies

Groups with less control of economic resources are likely to engage in violent conflicts with the group that control economic resources.
Iraq is one of the good examples for a society that is continuously experiencing enormous amount of collective violence due to its political and economic characteristics. Saddam's dictatorship was seen as infringement of basic human rights by world organizations and other countries. An example that everyone used to show the cruelty of the Saddam government was the Kurdish genocide. Saddam and other senior members of the government such as chemical Ali launched chemical weapons attacks that killed thousands of Kurds. This is one of the biggest examples of violations of human rights of citizens by their own government; some people even consider it as a second holocaust. The political system of Iraq and it's enrichment with the most valuable economic resource, oil has always draws attention of other nations. Countries that wish to control the oil looked for reasons to launch attacks against Iraq and acquire its economic resources. This is the reason, why United States and Great Britain decided to go to war against Iraq and overthrow Saddam's government. The level of collective violence in Iraq has increased since the war started, innocent Iraqi people fall victims of collective violence on daily basis. The only difference is that before it was from Iraq's own government and now it is foreigners who are involved in
“The practice of violence, like all action, changes the world, but the most probable change is to a more violent world” (Arendt pg 80). Violence is contagious, like a disease, which will destroy nations and our morals as human beings. Each individual has his or her own definition of violence and when it is acceptable or ethical to use it. Martin Luther King Jr., Walter Benjamin, and Hannah Arendt are among the many that wrote about the different facets of violence, in what cases it is ethical, the role we as individuals play in this violent society and the political aspects behind our violence.
So what choices do people make that allow collective violence to happen? Well there are a few choices people make, they can make the choice to fight, kill or hurt. The biggest choices are racism and bullying, Hitler made some of these choices let me tell you about the choices.
In Cohen’s article,“Culture, Social Organization, and Patterns of Violence,” he examined a study, based on the use of violence. Whether it was seen as more culturally appropriate within South and West communities as opposed to less violence seen in tighter, more organized states within the North, he stated that it is a trend of commonplace within these areas and communities following this norm as it is part of that area 's
Mankind has long accepted violence as a fair means to achieve equality. In human history, the most thorough changes are brought in by the most radical overthrow of the old structure, knocking down the walls that separated the silent majority from the minority, sweeping aside the commands of the oppressors, tearing down the chains of oppression that once trapped them away from their inherent rights of freedom, in an effort to achieve justice for themselves and their countries. Revolutions in particular illustrated that the groups that desire reform but are willing to compromise for stability, take longer to implement changes, while the groups that are more devoted to revolutionary change and are often unafraid to use violence, could implement
Student athletes have been disrespected their whole career, even though College athletic is considered a money maker of a business, the athletes don’t even get paid, some say it is because paying them will reduce the amount of competitiveness, some say they aren’t employees so they shouldn’t get paid. Even the full scholarships they are getting has flaws. Overall the colleges are just too greedy.
We are all unequal, therefore, build an unequal society, but not together, but superiors are responsible for building it; those belonging to the elite. In the approach taken by the author of Inequality & violence in the U.S. the capitalist system, makes us see the dark side of society, distinguishing the types of violence in the author 's opinion, they are worrying. Violence is closely linked to economic inequalities, ethnic or gender caused in most cases by a capitalist and militarist system exacerbated.
In order to discuss the modes of violence inherent in any symbolic order, a discussion of violence must precede its effects. It is easy to observe what I will call ‘subjective’ violence; however, doing so taints an ‘objective’ assessment. By subjective violence, I mean acts that we can describe as breaking the status quo or utterly unacceptable; spewing a spit ball, punching a friend, engaging in armed conflict, and so on. Objective violence is the status quo, or systemic acts maintaining the existing order; profit schemes enabling the last recession, government institutions that motivate resistance, etc. For the sake of brevity, I only wish to note that I am conceptualizing the notion of violence in an operative sense, as, I believe, it is the only way to provide an effective critique of
Violence in America America is a violent nation. Many people think that America is full of freedom and democracy. Do these people actually see what happens in America? Do they see the violence in schools, the crime in our society? Most likely, no, these people have loosely seen our society, the violence and the frauds that plague America's history as well as the present.
There are factors that are related to the level of violence by a group due to deindividuation. Firstly the loss of self-identity leads to anonymity and it might lower a person’s moral values. For example, we have seen some of the most violent crimes are often carried out in disguise to hide the identities of the persons performing the those acts. Secondly, as the people gets absorbed with group’s activities, the responsibilities becomes shared and any of the immoral or violent act performed does not affect the individual as he now thinks that it is the group doing such acts. Lastly, the size of the group, say if it is more will lead to more violence. For example, Insurgent groups killing innocent people even children without mercy.
The books Child of the Dark by Carolina Maria de Jesus and Testimony by Victor Montejo describes the lives of two individuals from different societies. In both of these societies there was much hardship and violence. The two main characters who wrote these books describe life through their point of view and explains the hardship and challenges they had living in a society filled with violence.
The story of Snow White is a cautionary tale that has been written by many. Each time it has been told, the authors had a different interpretation of how it should be. The two variations that I will be focusing on are The Brothers Grimm’s story and Walt Disney’s film. Although the fairytales are written and filmed by different authors, they share a common theme and two symbols. The theme that is present in both Grimm’s and Disney’s versions is that evil will always be punished. The symbols that are in both tales include the concept of beauty and the red poisonous apple.
Have you ever wondered if the news you’re reading is coming from a good source? Some Medias tend to tick their work a little to get more viewers and simply to get more people talking about it. A lot of media outlets do try their best to provide readers with a good source of information to educate themselves about a topic. If you train yourself to become a pro at investigation whether a news comes from a good reliable source you would be able to read a topic and be able to know if it’s fake or not. An individual can identify media bias buy knowing acknowledging the five standards’ that provides a citizen with accurate and reliable information they need to function in a free society. The author of the article presents their theory around the premise of looking at civil conflicts and determining factors as to why some of these conflicts are deadlier than others. The author is looking for an explanation as to why there is a variation in the number of combat deaths in civil wars from 1946 to 2002. Lacina uses the severity of battle violence in civil conflicts as the dependent variable in the test. The independent variables are broken into three groups: State Power which consists of military quality, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the availability of foreign aid and intervention, and the role of rough terrain; the second group is Regime type which is represented as whether the country is a democracy or not; and the last group is Cultural Diversity which is comprised of ethnic and religious polarization. After Lacina runs the experiment she finds that only three of the Independent
Structural violence can come from individual, social and political bearings. Although structural violence is not derived from anyone
1. International conflict among countries is more likely of what we may think. Today there are many different ongoing conflicts. International conflict is a stage of opposition, disagreement or incompatibility between two or more states (Malek). The term "international conflict" referred to conflicts between different nations and conflicts between people and organizations in different nations (Mr. Turetzky lec 11). It also applies to inter-group conflicts within one country when one group is fighting for independence or increased social, political, or economic power. International conflicts can be divided into two branches: private international conflict and public international conflict. A private international conflict is a disagreement
