The power usurper attempts to maximize his power trying to perpetuate himself in government (Diamint 62). Chavez attempted to do this by altering the constitution so that the term limits were longer and that he could run for immediate reelection. The previous constitution prevented immediate reelection and made candidates wait 10 years before running for president again. This was set up to prevent the rise of a dictator or another king, but the people put their faith in Hugo Chavez and approved the constitutional referendum in 1999. Chavez maximized his power and the power of his successor Nicolas Maduro by making these changes. “Venezuela reads like a textbook example of the socialist end-game: Social implosion driven by economic collapse, caused by shockingly self-destructive policy making” (Toro 39). “Socialism of the 21st Century” in the end just did not work and had failed. The changes made to the constitution have created a government that runs inefficiently and gives the president too much power. Chavez mismanaged the country's income and caused inflation of the Bolivar Note. Chavez had good intentions, but his programs to help the impoverished failed because of poor management. These people that he was trying to help are now more hurt than they were before because money put into these programs was not used effectively. This money could have been used to invest in the oil reserves and other parts of the economy to set the country up for success. Food is hard to come by and the crime and murder rate continues to raise. The country in debt and cannot even buy imports to sell to its citizens. Venezuela will need outside help if it is to recover from the situation caused by Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro. The only reason Chavez remained popular in Venezuela is because the economy was doing well in the beginning and he was able to control the media so that the public opinion of him was kept
Chavez used his life experiences in order to better the lives of many migrant workers in America. Key points in Chavez’s life that had
Chavez encountered many obstacles after the formation of his union and at the beginning of their strike. Aside from the fact that many of the workers were hesitant to join Chavez and go against
Cesar Estrada Chavez was born March 31, 1927 in Yuma Arizona the son of Librado and Juana Chavez. Cesar father owned 100 acres of land but was kicked off it when his parents couldn’t pay the taxes because it was during the great depression. When Chavez was young he and his family faced a lot of racisms everywhere. School was the worst place for Chavez because he was bullied for his mexican american culture. Chavez quit school to work in the fields full time to help his family. Chavez also served in Navy during world War II for two years. Even though he was fighting for the american country he was still treated bad because of he was mexican american. After he finished his two years in the navy he went to california to work in the farms. He married Helen fabela and had eight children.

After being in the Navy he worked his way up from a farm worker to an organizer in the Community Service Organization, created by Fred Ross in 1948. This training was used by Chavez for the future in finding the United Farm Workers. In 1962 is when Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association. They fought for clean water, bathrooms, lunch breaks, unemployment checks as well as fare wages for the farm
Cesar Chavez was born on March 31, 1927 in Yuma, Arizona. During his childhood, when he was twelve years old Chavez's family lost their home due to the inability to pay back taxes which had been in his family since before 1930. Losing his childhood home had effected Chavez greatly he had remembered the whole memory of a sheriff going to his house and kicking them out for the rest of his life “My mother came out of the house crying. We children knew there was trouble, but we were confused, worried. For two or three days, the deputy came back every day and we had to leave. When we left the farm, our whole life was upset, turned upside down. We had been part of a very stable community, and we were about to become migrant workers. We had been uprooted.
Cesar Chavez was born in San Luis AZ a small town near Yuma AZ on March 31, 1927 (source c). Cesar didn’t have a life like the other kid, a normal life. When he was a child he had to move from one place to another because his family were working on the fields and were changed in different places. Also, Chavez attended more than thirty schools in his period of life. He remembers having to listen to a lot of racist people saying bad things about him, like yelling at him.
Cesar Chavez was born March 31, 1927, near Yuma, Arizona. He was the son of Librado Chávez and Juana Estrada Chavez. He grew up in Arizona with four siblings; Richard Chavez, Librado Chavez, Rita Chavez Medina, and Vicki Chavez Lastra. His home was a small adobe house on some 40 acres of land. This house was taken by Anglos. Cesar's father offered to clear 80 acres of land to earn the house back. This agreement was broken and the house was sold to another man named Justus Jackson. The Chavez's would get the house back, but not for long.
Laborers all over America are, even today, feeling the effects of Chavez’s activism. He helped to spread awareness of the injustices and unfair treatment felt by the working class.
Chavez did not like school because he did not speak English very well and Spanish was forbidden in the school he was attending at the time. All of his teachers spoke English. He would get punished with a ruler to his knuckles for speaking Spanish. In 1942 Chavez had graduated the 8th grade. He could not attend high school because he had to work for his family to earn money, so instead he became a migrant farm worker. People today want their children to learn about Chavez so that the generations to come might live their lives like his. The significant event that impacted Chavez to become the person he was, was his own experience as a farm worker his whole life. The people that made a significant impact on his life included Martin Luther King Jr. that had said, “As brothers in the fight for equality I extend the hand of fellowship and good will and wish continuing success to you and your members” (cesarchavezholiday.org). Also Gandhi had agreed with Chavez’s act of
In the end Chavez won the fight he did so by having protests. They were not just any kind of protests, but they were peaceful. The protest group was called The United Farm Works. Later on he discovered that harmful pesticides were being sprayed in the fields. That were affecting the health of the workers. Still throughout it all he kept calm, never raising a hand showing great civil disobedience.
Chavez decided to then launch a boycott of two of Delano's main growers, Schenley Industries and DiGiorgio. Chavez organized a massive march of 300 miles from Delano to Sacramento, the state capital. This is the longest protest march ever in the United States. Not only was it a march, it was a journey that drew the Catholic faith of many of the strikers. Marchers sang “Nosotros Venceremos” the civil rights anthem as they carried portraits of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which is Mexico’s saint and symbol of hope, they also carried large crosses representing Christ's final journey and flags including the NFWA's black eagle. As the march made its way across California, hope built, and in each town they passed through, they attracted new supporters.
As I said before, many critics agreed that Hugo Chavez has been able to diminished Venezuelan democracy to convert it to a competitive authoritarian regime. Chavez has controlled the country and stills does, in a way in that using populism and his policy of clientism he gets the masses and specially the poor to support him and agreed with him in many of his reforms and actions. Allying himself with leftist countries like Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua and especially Cuba, Chavez has implemented what he calls a “Bolivarian Revolution”, revolution that allows him to have a complete control of the country. Furthermore, Chavez has been using the oil revenues not only as a method of getting international support for his ideas and type of regime but also, for his own personal enrichment
Throughout this assignment, our job as students was to develop a plan in order to have knowledge about the country we were planning to discuss, the country I decided to talk about in this assignment is Venezuela. Venezuela was given the name of Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela since 1999. Venezuela is located on the northern coast of South America, the country is compromised with numerous islands from the Caribbean Sea. It borders Brazil from the south,Colombia from the west and Guyana from the east. A little history about Venezuela, this country became a Spanish colony in the 1520’s. In 1830, Venezuela withdrew from Gran Colombia and became an independent republic. Most of Venezuela’s 19th century history was characterized by periods of political instability, dictatorial rule and then followed by a succession in the first half of the 20th century(CountryWatch). Hugo Chavez became president in 1999 and continuously became elected until 2013, the current president of Venezuela is Nicolas Maduro(CountryWatch).
Dozens had died during that week of rioting. Yet after the revolt had calmed down, “an upbeat Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez said on Sunday he no longer faces the threat of being overthrown and plans to rule until 2013” (CNN). For now, most of Chávez's opponents have been careful not to advocate more violence, demanding instead an immediate vote to decide whether he should step down.
Venezuela is a country that throughout the years has tried to become a democratic country. In 1998, Hugo Chavez was elected president of Venezuela with the intentions of making a Venezuela a better country. His intentions were to rewrite a new constitution in order to improve the state and fight poverty (Coronel, 2008). Years passed and Venezuela has become worse compared to what it was before Hugo Chavez
