Within her arguable essay “Family Guy and Freud: Jokes and Their Relation to the Uncouncious”, Antonia Peacocke, who is a graduate instructor in Philosophy from the University of California: Berkeley, uses Freud’s ideas to compare them to the harsh humor and satire to the show Family Guy. From these ideas, Peacocke is able to make a connection and an argument from Family Guy’s rude humor to the ideas that Freud literates. This can help the viewers of the show have an open mind on the reality the humor can have on people mentally.

Comedy is continuously being censored, particularly on college campuses resulting in a massive feud whether college students are too PG or comedians are just being sensitive and uptight. To adjust the balance between college students and comedians, it is important to review research on comedy’s potential contribution to society, as well as society’s contribution to comedy. Barbara Ehrenreich employed the use of humor multiple times in Nickel and Dimed; it was perhaps her most frequently used rhetorical device. Ehrenreich was trying to portray the tragedy and heartbreak of the situation by using that sort of hopeless, sardonic humor. She also used her humor as a way to camouflage topics that would otherwise be off-limits. Although some of the humor included in the narrative may have seemed distasteful, it all had a purpose and was rarely used inappropriately.

In the article of David Sedaris “Undecided”, he is very critical about the unsure voters in the American elections. For Sedaris, these undecided voters are usually the ones who have a decisive vote in an election without knowing who they voted for. His mother didn´t have any political knowledge and rely on David to vote for a candidate for her. Sedaris compares the election with choosing what to eat. If you were offered chicken or a platter of broken glass in it, which one would you choose? For him is not confusing, candidates are very different from each other, so it is ridiculous to be undecided. The percentage of people in the United States that are undecided or do not vote is big, but even that, I believe we have a very active voting population.

People would judge mostly anyone based on their actions or just how they look like. It’s important that people judge the actions of others instead of judging others because of their actions. Society claims that they will become better people, but they like the idea of it. In David Sedaris’ Us and Them, Sedaris himself learns that society is corrupted through the instances that his parents claim they will change for the better, and the Tomkey’s beliefs.

Many comedians have been talking a great deal about politics and the government as a way to spread a variety of messages to the community expressing how they feel about how things are going for America. Therefore many comedians have become more popular in this past election season and with Trump 's new presidency. Stephen Colbert an American comedian, television host, and author uses his spotlight in media as a way to attack President Trump and his administration within his comedy. Colbert uses Juvenalian satire and satirical techniques while discussing politics to reveal his opinions as a way to spread messages to society about the Trump Administration and uses his comedic platform to do so.

David Sedaris has been compared to some of the greatest names in American Literature, including Mark Twain, Dorothy Parker and James Thurber (Moredock). Not surprisingly, all of the aforementioned authors captivated audiences with their sarcasm, wit, and humor three characteristics that are indicative of Sedaris's writing in general. Sedaris has made a career as an author and recording artist (having broadcast and recorded his works of literature numerous times) who finds insight and points of laughter in the ordinary nuances of life. Most of his articles are autobiographical in nature, or at least involve him as one of the principle characters in them. His 2004 book, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, is quite typical in this respect. Stephen Colbert uses many elements of satire to make this segment of the episode funny. Colbert incorporates mockery, puns, tone, sarcasm, and hyperboles into his jokes towards Wikipedia as he creates a new word called “Wikitality”. Colbert himself is using parody to portray the fictional on screen persona of Stephen Colbert as a conservative specialist. His use of parody creates the stereotypical conservative ideology. The phrases on the side accuse Wikipedia, and knowledge in general as having a liberal bias.

Although not recognized easily, humor is an effective tool that can influence the society. As Alain de Botton argues in his book Status Anxiety, humorists serve a vital function in that they satirize the social problems without offending any particular groups. They identify the troubles, exaggerate through humor, and effectively deliver the messages they have intended. The position of humorists can be recognized simply through media that people encounter everyday. Dave Barry’s The Ugly Truth about Beauty and Jon Stewart on The Daily Show reveals how humorists' indirect criticisms through wit can change the world by acknowledging people about the problems that are embedded in themselves.

Humour and satire are two concepts that are both wide ranging and diverse, from dark, to light hearted, with each producing a different effect. Humour in the main, is something that is used to please the audience, its function is to invoke laughter amongst its audience. Satire is used to create a comical critical view of the subject at hand, this can range from a light hearted comical way, to a judgemental way, with each style giving the text a different meaning, however this does not mean that satire cannot be humorous, which can evident in the use of parody and irony within texts. Within literature both concepts play an important role to how the text is viewed, humour can include word play, grammatical jokes, to even inside jokes with the author and reader, and with satire, including that of irony and parody, with each style and type delivering humour in its own unique way. These differing styles of humour can be found in a variety of forms including Jasper Forde’s The Eyre Affair (2001), with its silly atmosphere, word play and grammar jokes, and the use of light hearted satire and parody to brighten up the text, and Julian Barnes A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters (1989), where there is a more serious atmosphere, with a more critical, satirical eye on history and characters, as well as using irony to achieve its comical effect, and the position of the world. One of the most underappreciated and unrecognized forms of comedy is black humor. Black humor often deals with events that are not often associated with other forms of comedy, such as war, murder, insanity and death. The main reason that this form of comedy is so underappreciated is that it requires some thinking on the part of the audience and many people are not willing to do that. The types of humor that are popular today do not require much thinking and can be characterized as one-liners. However, black humor has been used as an effective means of satire usually towards a tragic event.
