Hunger is a recurrent theme in my life. Though growing up in a low income household of seven in Inglewood, California often translated hunger into a literal daily struggle for sustenance, hunger also materialized as an overwhelming desire to understand and explore the world I lived in. The loudest growling for nutrition came from my mind. Despite of limited resources at home to feed my intellectual appetite, I made due with consuming free books from the public schools I attended and from the local library. During recreational time after school and throughout summers spent at home, I was between the covers of books.

Exposure to the institution of higher education has helped me greater recognize the sociopolitical dimensions of the western world. Yet, in delving deeper into theories about inequality and race relations, I am perplexed as to why there is so much scholarship about people with backgrounds like mine but no action to improve the educational and social experiences of low income, inner city youth of color. I now know that in order to see myself reflected in my education, I must take it upon myself to accomplish such. program, I am seeking acceptance to the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP). I believe that SROP is the best possibility for myself to develop my research skills because of the level of investment from the program, like Mellon Mays. Unlike semester long research apprenticeships offered by UC Berkeley, SROP allows students to focus on their specific research projects or faculty projects of similar focus. Rather than simply translate interviews of punch numbers, SROP student are fully immersed in a research experience. Also, I would like to participate in SROP, because of the program’s mission statement to support students of underrepresented backgrounds in higher education like myself. The program demonstrates understanding of the unique challenges students of underrepresented backgrounds face in the academy and interest in developing students’ crafts so they can one day change such climates in
