I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang Response Paper #8
I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang is a film directed by Mervyn LeRoy, from 1932. The film is about a soldier, James Allen, who returns home from WWI with the aspiration to be an engineer. Unfortunately, his family wanted him to return to his prewar job, working at a factory. James decides to travel around the United States looking for a job and gets mixed up with the wrong person, which lands him on a chain gang. Throughout the film, various metallic sounds can be heard. One example, of metallic sounds in the film, is the pickaxe clanking as the calendar changes. A second example of metallic sounds in the film is the triangular bell that the wardens of the chain gang use to wake up the prisoners. A third example of metallic sounds in the film is the warden checking all the prisoner’s chains after the end of the workday. A fourth example of metallic sounds in the film is the clanking of the pickaxe, while James is working for the Tri-state engineering company in Chicago. Firstly, the clanking of the pickaxe hitting the rocks is in sync with the calendar changing. Every clank coincides with the calendar flipping to the next month. The calendar changing along with the clanking of the pickaxe can be seen at least twice in the film. The first time it can be seen is after James talks to his friend about escaping. His friend tells him that, he can plan an escape, but wait a year or two to act on the plan. The second time the
The most heinous crimes committed in the prisons are done by the hands of prison gangs. Gangs compete with other gangs to be the most dangerous of them all. There are many reasons why an inmate would join a prison gang. Some do it for the power although others do it for protection from rival gangs or people who don’t like them. CBC News reported that in the last 5 years the numbers of inmates who are affiliated with gangs has risen by 32%. Some people believe that prisons are the breeding grounds for gang initiation and joining. Adult gang members in prison range from ages 18 to 65 years old. Many prison gang members are brainwashed. They are used to being fed, clothed, and sheltered in prison that they are unable to walk a straight line once released. With little to no skills of surviving by themselves in the real world, gang members return to prison because that is what they are used to. It is common to find ex-con gang members panhandling on the streets or resorting to crimes such as robbery, burglary or theft. Gang members do what they know instead of trying to become better. My topic is about prison gang and violence. Why they join gangs, How they took over prison, How they affect other inmates, How to prevent it in the correctional facilities.
After many mixtapes and nearing the edge of household name status, Maryland rapper Logic drops his first album. In this album is a song titled Gang Related. This song tells the story of what environment and household he grew up in. His brother is in a gang and sells cocaine to his father in front of him. Logic's mother is in an out of mental institutions, all the while logic is growing up and trying not to get shot when he walks outside. With drugs and gangs all around him, it is quite amazing that he got out and become a famous rapper. Gang Related also has a core message of stopping the violence, which leads to a question, is this song about his story or a message about ending the violence?
In chapter 5 in the novel Gang Leader for a Day by Sudhir Venkatesh he writes about his experience of how he began to tag along with Ms. Bailey more often. Venkatesh says the more time he would spend with her, the more he would understand her work ethics and why she is so important to the community. Since Venkatesh was spending more time with Ms. Bailey he began to help her with food drives and food donations in the community as well as go to meetings that she would run. Venkatesh says the reason that Ms. Bailey was helping the housing projects, community and their building was because it was low on clothing and food for the winter. This portion of the novel teaches us about how many people out there have needs and the altruism in the way some
Organized stalking is a very well know reality occurring to an untold amount of people a crossed the United States. Our U.S Government and intelligence agencies are fully aware of this. They are also aware of its direct purpose of the slow destruction of the targeted individual’s life this includes the deliberate ending of their life. Mr. Ted L. Gunderson (1929-2011) retired from the F.B.I as Senior Special Agent – In-Charge of the Los Angeles Field Office. In his affidavit dated 26 April 2011 he refers to organized stalking by its slang name gang stalking.
Fleisher & Decker (2001), note that there are several factors that can impede a successful integration back into the community when it comes to gang members. First, gangs are comprised of a vast network type system. Within this system there are countless members who become associates, this relationship does not have to include the same crime. The criminal link can be broad and range from misdemeanor crime to severe crime. Further, this is not only a complex network, but a social system where criminal activity is accepted. Therefore, desistance is an obstacle for offenders, especially if they remain in contact with these individuals. Also, gangs do not go away just because key members go to jail or prison. There are always others there to

According to the National Gang Intelligence Center Gang Report, “Gangs are rapidly enlarging into most. Street gangs in particular, which account for 88 percent of U.S. gang membership, have increased their numbers in 53 percent of the nation’s police jurisdictions.” These gangs are drafting their partners while they are in primary or secondary school. You might ask why, because it easy to manipulate these kids minds and they do not think about the outcome that comes with joining a gang. Gang members usually separate themselves from non-members and other gangs by dressing a specific style or wearing a
After reading the book “Gang Leader for a Day” by Sudhir Venkatesh my view on poverty changed. I realized that poverty is truly a cycle and people who are come from it have a hard time leaving the cycle. I also thought that there would be more violence from the gang than Sudhir wrote about. This might have been due to the fact that they kept him from seeing much of the violence, but also the majority of the violence seemed to be within the gang against their own members. An example of this in the memoir is how J.T. deals with his unruly members of the gang. If they do not cooperate, J.T. will have them beat up as their punishment. The gang also is violent to residents of the projects, but only when the residents do something that the gang sees as questioning their authority.
The film I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang stands out from its time through its contemporary use of sound. Not reflective of the musical genre popular at the time, the film only uses sound for an effect needed in the story such as the sound of a train or gunfire. While other films at the time used music to fill in silent gaps, or to drown out static, I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang is a demonstration of strong dialog and a purposeful story. Due to the new flexibility in sound, this film focuses on the development between the characters through dialog and not the use of sound as a commercial commodity to sell the film. This new focus on the corruption of the criminal justice system was enabled by the new technology allowing the film to have
Nixon believed that Johnson focused too much on the social causes and not enough on punishment of those who committed crimes believing that men should be held accountable for their actions. He was urged to place this war on crime on the same plane as any crisis fought in the
In the California jail system there are six major prison gangs. The major prison gangs are the Nuestra Familia, the Mexican Mafia, the Aryan Brotherhood, the Black Guerrilla Family, the Northern Structure, or the Nazi Low Riders. There is such a high level of rivalry among gangs that if a member of one group is released too close to another group of gang members then things could explode violently because of the rivalry that is present and they could attack one another. The prisoners must be released in careful order to maintain the peace in. Once the inmates are released to the yard the first member of each gang to be released will claim a spot on the yard for the rest of the gang to gather. Once the gang is gathered at the location that was
The United States criminal justice system has many flaws. Some can be fixed, but others have left officials of the criminal justice system dumbfounded and searching for answers. Prison gangs seem to be one of the latter. While prison gangs were first recorded in the 1950’s, they did not become a massive problem until the 1970’s (Davis). Prison gangs have contributed to violence throughout nearly every prison in the country.
Team B Analyzes the Genovese crime family originated from the Morello crime family of East Harlem in Manhattan during the early years of the 20th century. The Morellos started arriving in New York from the village of Corleone, Sicily around 1892, and soon became involved in criminal activities. The family was run by brothers Tony, Nicolo, and Giuseppe Morello, and half brothers Vincenzo "Vincent" Terranova and Ciro "The Artichoke King" Terranova. By the early 1910s, the Morello family involved themselves with extortion and other traditional Mafia activities in

Sociological views have been changed dramatically in the past 40 years due to gender and racial studies. Also, women have started to join gangs since America has been changed with woman equality laws passing.
