Currently, I am working as a medical assistant for Dr. Richard Bell at Associates in Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, a private practice of four physicians located on the campus of St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield, Missouri. I currently work forty hours per week and plan on keeping this position until next summer. I work alongside Dr. Bell to perform both clinical and administrative duties. As integral part of the practice, my clinical duties include: taking medical histories, explaining treatment procedures to patients, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, instructing patients about medication and wound care, preparing and administering medications as directed by the physician, authorizing prescription refills as directed, and removing sutures and changing dressings. I also serve as a scribe for Dr. Bell by converting his handwritten patient visit notes to an electronic record.
The duties I complete as a medical assistant give me a unique opportunity to learn and be immersed in medicine as a member of practice’s health care team. I take every opportunity I get to shadow Dr. Bell and take the time to actively learn from him. He continuously goes out of his way to utilize teachable moments to help me learn more about medicine and the factors surrounding it, such as the complex relationship between insurance providers and healthcare professionals. He is always receptive of any questions I may have about exams, procedures, and treatments and routinely asks my
It took three seconds for the physician assistant to ask me a question that I had heard hundreds of times throughout my life. Unlike numerous people who had asked me before, the physician assistant had the knowledge and the ability to bring me relief from the redness that had plagued me for most of my life. I hope to become a physician assistant because I want to positively impact people’s lives – whether that be by giving them relief from an insecurity they have had for
I work as a Non Injury Casualty Adjuster for Nationwide Insurance in Raleigh North Carolina. We are the biggest insurance company in North Carolina and we try to provide the best customer service possible. We are always high in customer service throughout the insurance industry even competing with other rival companies such as Geico, State Farm and Allstate Insurance. The down side is the average work day is about 12 hour a day if you plan on staying on top of things. With my job, the things that matters most is pleasing the customer and being there for the customer. The only thing is the 8 hour work day turns into 12 hours a day, 5 days a week. While your leadership expects and encourages you to speak with everyone the same day, it’s rare that it happens. The many issues that you have to deal with along with investigating the claims, clearing coverage which means investigating deeper to see if insurance will pay for the damages.
In addition, teaching is a significant part of any doctor’s life. As physicians, we are constantly educating not only our patients and their families, but also other physicians, residents and medical students. A physician may know all the medical information in the world, but the care of a patient is primarily predicated on that physician’s ability to successfully
Every year, an estimate of 5.9 million people dies from disease (World Health Organization, 2016). Some of these diseases are caused by bacteria, parasites, virus, trauma, mutations, and environment. Although these diseases can cause death and injury, in many cases, they can be treated by a specialist called a physician. A physician is a person who is qualified to practice medicine. Often, these medical specialists need help in treating large numbers of patients in need of care. In the 1960s, the physician assistant (PA) profession was created.in 1965, there was a noticeable shortage of physicians. Eugene A. Stead Jr., MD, of the Duke University Medical Center assembled the first class to take on the role as physician assistants. These men received medical training in fast track manner to what a physician might learn (Academic Academy of Physician Assistants Organization, 2014).The duties of a physician assistant are similar to what a physician may carry out but differ in some ways. Today, the physician assistant profession is a growing field, but more difficult to achieve. Recently, there has been an increase in the amount of school time and pre requisites to be accepted into a physician assistant graduate program. Specialization of a particular field is even more difficult to achieve. In addition, work environments can be often challenging. However, high salaries and benefits of working in the medical field give reward to the employee.
I don’t come from a background that is heavily associated with medicine, nor have I ever really been immersed in a medical setting. As a result, I do not have a first-hand experience of what it is like to practice medicine. However, since my early years,

I am employed by Emerald Coast Behavioral Hospital, which is under management by a national corporation, Universal Health Services. My work environment consists of an 86-bed psychiatric facility that provides specialized inpatient and outpatient services to adults, children, elderly, active-duty service members and veterans. I work the nightshift on the resiliency unit which provides post-traumatic stress disorder and chemical dependency treatment to active-duty military members and veterans. I, as a registered nurse, work with psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, nurse practitioners, mental health technicians, other registered nurses and upper management of the facility. Together, we form an interdisciplinary team that works
During my 9 years of experience as a Medical Assistant, I have gone through many different situations and have learned how to handle my patients as well as my co-workers. I have excellent relationships with my patients. Loyalty, dedication, and hard working are some of my plus
To start, I want to talk about what I observed and what I was told a regular day as a medical biller looks like. Mrs. West works five days a week in seven hour shifts. She wears business casual every day. There are not any uniforms required, which allows versatility amongst coworkers. Daily duties of the job include billing claims, filing insurance payments, resolving issues regarding medical claims, and invoicing patients. Each worker, in a business of just three employees, is generally in charge of an entire doctor’s office claims. Mrs. West says that she enjoys owning her own company and being able to help patients, both things that occur daily as a central executive medical biller.
Going through my education, I have acquired various skills to assist me on the road to becoming a physician. Devoting hundreds of hours to volunteering and shadowing in a hospital setting has given me a basic understanding of the care and patience required by physicians. In particular, shadowing a pediatrician helped me develop the ability of observation and acute attention to detail. I was given the opportunity to participate and interact with the patients and attempt to form my own diagnosis based on the given symptoms. Having the opportunity to input my own opinion and discussing the patient’s medical history with the physician assisted me in cultivating necessary characteristics such as versatility and keen intuition
This tremendously improved my confidence and strengthened my beliefs that I too could do exactly do what he was doing one day. In addition, the patients welcomed me into the room with a smile on their face and treated me like I was family. It was such an indescribable feeling. Furthermore, I was amazed at how Dr. Sastry was never exhausted from the hectic workload that has kept him busy for the past few decades. He never once complained about all the work he had to tend to. I inquired how he was so energetic, as I usually feel tired after a long day’s work. He answered saying, “It’s extremely important to be healthy physically and mentally. Keeping a positive outlook and truly enjoying your work will keep you going.” I now know that I should keep my work exciting and fun to sustain in medical field. Overall, my time spent at Dr. Sastry’s office was very wholesome and enriching experience. I feel so privileged to have had this opportunity to grow as a person and will treasure the past few weeks for the rest of my
I aspire to perform Nobel Peace Prize winning research while providing compassionate care to my patients. Having both a researcher’s and a physician’s perspectives, I am motivated to bridge the gap between science and medicine by educating patients about their condition and treatment options in appropriate detail. As Albert Einstein said, “[I]f you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.” Being trained as a leader of both science and medicine at UCSF, my understanding will allow me to teach any patient and provide their right to educated healthcare decisions. With my balance of clinical work and research currently, I am excited to go to work every day since each day brings a new learning experience. Attending UCSF would transform my dream into my reality and keep this excitement in my life as I progress as a leader of academic
Prior to my brother's accident, my knowledge about the health care system was limited. But as I joined him on multiple weekly physicals and dental check ups, I was so overwhelmed by the effects the power of medicine has on
