Many students of all ages have issues with writing, the only way to get good at writing is to have experiance. I never paid much attention to my writing skills in high school, I just did not care about writing. This year as a freshman in college I have been struggling with writing this semester in GSW 1100. Even though I have not been doing well, I understand that writing in college is extremely important to learn and develop. This is important because most courses in college have writing in them. As the semester has progressed, I have slowly started to understand where I am with writing and where I need to improve. Revising my essays is a great way to learn from my mistakes. Although my writing is not great yet I am slowly getting there with this class. I believe I have improved my writing a great deal in several areas over the course of this semester and I feel that my portfolio shows this. I have learned to develop my thesis and make it clear, to recognise sentence boundaries errors, and to see and fix the many grammar errors in my writing. First, I was very bad at writing a thesis in the beginning of this school year. In my essays my thesis was just not there or very unforced. I would be looking over my paper and I would look at it as well developed but other people were very confused on what my paper was about till they read the whole paper to understand. A good thesis is important for other readers because without a solid thesis the readers may read the introduction
Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn’t know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It’s a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences.
Over the course of this semester, I have improved as a writer. At the beginning, I would like to think I was fairly decent, but I didn’t have much experience in anything but English and the occasional history papers. This year was difficult, as it forced me to learn new ways of writing. As I got more comfortable, I clearly improved, with my writing and content improving. Essays like the Prairie Meadows scholarship and annotated bibliography were remarkably different than what I was used to, and I benefited from writing them. The beginning of this year, I wasn’t incredibly concerned with my sentence structure or the impact of the words I used. As I learned and wrote more, my sentences got more complex and I -for the most part- stopped using
Like transforming from a caterpillar to a butterfly, my writing style transformed from something mediocre to something quite exceptional. In high school, even when I took advanced placement English and Literature courses, I was never good at writing. My writing would lack structure, reasoning, syntax, and a well-defined thesis statement. My inadequate grades on writing assignments lowered my self-esteem, so I assumed I would never enjoy writing papers because I believed I could never improve. However, since attending a university my writing style has improved far beyond my expectation. My EN 101 course enhanced my understanding of the different ways I could approach my writing. Also, it enhanced my comprehension of outlines to complete assignments. Investing quality time into my writing made a substantial difference because I became a stronger writer. Through the late nights, constant revisions, and agonizing head traumas, I learned that my writing is truly spectacular whenever I incorporate well-defined thesis statements, provide sufficient supporting evidence, and maintain a clear focus in my assignments.
Before attending the University of Memphis, my writing abilities and thought process was quite narrow. Writing papers and essays have always been a struggle for me, I do not really have the best skills in writing. Entering college has showed me the importance of writing and how its importance will never vade. Knowing that, one of my ultimate goals in college is to improve in my writing, not only for myself, but also for my future in wanting to pursue a degree in nursing.
Everyone on the planet has a goal set in life, but only a handful attempt to improve to obtain their goal by studying the subject their goal is in. In my English class, English 101 this quarter I was astonished by how much I had progressed as a writer sharpening my writing skills and also learned a lot about writing that I hadn’t learned before. In my writing portfolio for this quarter I had to write an autobiography essay, a research essay, and this reflection essay to develop my writing skills better. The writing assignments were fun to do because it challenged me to work on essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better writer that gave me the self-confidence and skills to take on the world on my own.
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work.
While attending writing class, I learned about the 4 steps in writing, bases for revising, organizing, and connecting specific information, and I also learned about the different types of essays such as descriptive, narrative, process, cause and effect and argumentative essay. I have been a student at Milwaukee Area Technical College for 1 semester, and over the course of my enrollment I have grown and learned more that I knew prior to attending this writing course. Participating in this writing class has taught me so much more than stuff about literature and language, it has taught me another way of expressing myself. I have learned here how to write and express myself, how to think for myself, and how to find the answers to the things that I don 't know. Most importantly I have learned how important technique, outlines and organization are. My goal in this paper is to inform writers about how my writing skills have improved.
I have improved in numerous ways during this semester in Composition 1. I have enhanced my writing skills such as being able to write proficiently, and being able to form an essay in a set amount a time similar to the 50 minute essay tests in class. This course has taught me to broaden my vocabulary throughout my essays in order for them stimulating and captivating. While writing essays and creating the works cited pages, I have learned to accurately cite websites, books, and articles. I have also learned to suitably place and refer to where I found the material used for the essays within, and at the beginning of, paragraphs. When writing my essays I have learned to transition smoothly, however, I still struggle with it every once in a while, the writing I do continues to enhance. My speech has also improved from standing in front of the class and presenting a group project along with fellow classmates. I now know what it is like and what to expect the next time I do it. I have improved in many ways during this course and I feel, overall, the portfolio represents my progress greatly.
This year I have learned a lot from College Writing, this class has taught me a lot about my own writing and what makes a good essay. I have learned a lot about myself as a writer and as a person throughout the course. In this reflection of the past semester I will be going through my past papers and talk about what I liked and how I could’ve made them better. I will also be going through the activities that have shaped my writing the most. Hopefully, I will be representing how I have grown as a writer throughout the year because of this class. Before taking this class I was already relatively confident in my writing abilities and was excited to take the class. Now that the course is completed I am even more confident in my writing because of all the new techniques and helpful tips I learned.
As a high school student taking on a college course, I acknowledged and accepted the challenge that lay ahead of me. The main reason I selected Composition I and II was that it allowed me to vastly improve my overall writing skills. Developing my techniques will benefit me when I am required to compose any writing assignments for my future college classes. Therefore, with that goal in mind, I chose to take this class while still attending high school. I began this class as an average writer; additionally, I did not know the majority of the writing rules or how to make an essay meet its potential. Over the course of these two classes, I believe that I have proven my writing to be more seamless and interesting to read.
As a student, one will always want to make their due assignments top quality. Of course, we are taught by different teachers and mentors what quality a certain assignment should have, a college writing course is no different. Entering as the new class of college freshman, we discover that there is indeed a fresh or different perspective and expectation in our writing. As a result, new challenges will rise. After carefully reading and analyzing I Stand Here Writing and Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers, both written by Nancy Sommers, it has introduced a understanding of what college writing ought to exemplify. Students should be able to achieve many objectives in an essay with a different perception on
I always debate if my thesis was good enough, if it included enough, and if it was fluent enough. While in high school for many essay assignments I was counted off numerous points for not getting across the main points in thesis. One tip I did learn in high school that improved my thesis statements, was to start your writing and come back to the thesis. After moving onto the body and later coming back to the thesis, I discovered it was a lot easier to develop my thesis. Teaching myself in my own writing, what should be included in that particular thesis. While just writing and throwing your thoughts out there it will all come around and make since. The thesis is a very important punch line and ties the writing all together. Knowing how important your thesis could possibly be, is a huge reason to motivate me at improving in this particular step of my writing.
I believe my writing has improved to a certain degree. As look, at where I first started. I have to say that, this course has really been a challenge for me. My time management has been completely off, however, I know that working on written assignments requires time. If there is something that I need to improve on, in order to further my writing abilities, it's definitely understanding the time is takes to write an essay, how to prepare and organized my assignments. I look at new ways now to organize my drafts, thoughts and the whole writing process itself. Brainstorming has definitely been beneficial as well as using bullet points to break down my essay. I notice that I tend to over write my paragraphs. A classmate of mine had suggested
Over the course of this past semester, my ability to write has improved tremendously. Prior to undertaking this course, my expertise in writing was not as fine-tuned as it should have been. I had never previously been enrolled in a class specifically tailored to writing-- which was quite clear. Upon reading my past works, it becomes apparent that my writing style consisted of fluff, small words, and inconsistently structured sentences. These problems have, for the most part, been remedied with the coursework I have tackled in College Writing. Rather than long, drawn out papers that take an eternity to reach the primary point, my recent work is much nicer in terms of composition and grammar. I credit these improvements to the three primary
Writing is not just as simple as putting words down on a document or a piece of paper, it is a process. Within this intricate process are steps that involve more than just writing, such as critical thinking, planning, and editing. Using these steps has not only helped me when planning an essay but also when composing one. Throughout this course, I have managed to improve many skills and gain a lot of strengths, but I still possess some weaknesses. Overall, I believe my strengths have definitely outgrown these weaknesses and have led to a better, more high-quality writing process which leads to improved essays.
