The story I picked is called “I never planned on being a leprechaun” and automatically I had to read. The phrase “I never planned on…” grabbed my attention because who really plans on becoming someone they never thought in a million years they would be. Life will lead down an unexpected road if you let it. It reminded me of my unpredictable life, things are always constantly changing. Nothing ever goes according to plans but everything falls in place. In 2010, Eileen Logiudice interviews a New Yorker named Jess Buzzutto who embraced his shortness by dressing up as a leprechaun. He never planned on being a leprechaun, he didn’t even know what one was! One day, He saw a guy with green hat and said, ‘I want that’. So he grew my beard and my moustache
The story I chose was A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, and the first time I read it I was not looking for significant details. I was more in shock and stunned from the ending to dwell on small details. Then I read it again and started to notice some small, seemly insignificant details that foreshadowed the ending of the story. One can also see how the town views Miss Emily, treating her as an object rather than a person. This can lead to a sort of feeling of isolation and loneliness with no one to talk to, leading into some of her mental illness.
The story “Your Move” stood out to me the most because James and Isaac, the main characters of the story, left their house just because James was forcing Isaac to come with him to join the cool kids club. Also Isaac telling James to stop doing what he wanted to do and be like.
The two stories that I related to and learned the most from were The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien and The Screwtape Letters by C.S Lewis. Both revealed things in myself that in some cases I already saw and pushed away, or that I never knew and helped me understand myself better. I will begin with The Hobbit.
I have always enjoyed music with strong, meaningful lyrics so this option was the obvious choice for my final. I find myself constantly listening to music and have listened to “Hotel California” by The Eagles more times than I can count, making it another obvious choice for me. Although, when reading through the lyrics the first time, I realized that I had never understood the song meaning and the theme it is intended to portray. It was interesting to read through it with my own, as opposed to hearing the tone it receives when listening to the song. Not having the music helped me understand the meaning of the lines better, letting the words sink in instead of them being sung quickly and then gone.
I chose this book because it was recommended from people. I read the book of the book, and it seemed interesting and dramatic. I like dramatic books because it makes events more interesting and it would motivate me to keep reading the book.
The essay I chose for my response page is Mint Snowball by Naomi Shihab Nye, a story of a girl born in the wrong time. It's very interesting that this story is a personal narrative, but it is mostly written about Her great-grandfather. Her mother probably told her this story often enough that it stuck with her and became vivid in detail. She seems like she wished she was there with her great-grandfather. This leads to her disconnect between her and modern day society.
I chose to read The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd because when I read the back of the book, it seemed to portray an interesting plot. When reading it, I knew I was right. I feel that certain people could relate to this and I know that situations like these are happening all around us even as we speak.
To Be A Real Leprechaun By:0302 To be a real leprechaun, and have a pot of gold. To be able to enjoy the music, and not be left out in the cold. Their life of enjoyment, can be seen in their face. To be a living leprechaun, is something I can embrace.
I chose a piece called “Writing for Their Lives”, for my rhetorical summary essay. This article was chosen at random, we were not assigned a certain prompt or article to do a rhetorical summary on, so I panicked, picking the chapter that looked the most interesting, and choosing a subject that I would invest my time in researching. I think a big issue for me right off the bat was having to choose my own article. Although there are normally two opinions on having the freedom of choosing something yourself academically, it scared me into thinking I wouldn’t choose the right one.
Me: “The book I decided to read for my English book report is called Wrongful Death by Sandra Gilbert.”
What made me choose this book was the title. Looking at the title and reading the back of the book it just seems like something I can relate to. Grewing up the way that I did and seeing the thing that I have I felt like this could be a good book for me. The subject of the book is also something that I would like to learn more about. This being a non fiction book I seen a perfect chance to do actually that. What really made me choose this book was my interest in the title.
The David Pelzter book I choose was “A Child Called It,” I’d never read it before so I was excited to get into it. A quick Google search found me the PDF of the book and I began reading it immediately. The first thing I noticed was the cover, I knew the book was familiar and instantly remembered seeing it all through my primary and secondary educational settings. I use to read books for fun before I started college, but since starting I had absolutely no real free time, so this assignment was a breathe of fresh air.
Throughout this class, there were many interesting stories that opened my eyes up to new learnings and thoughts about literature. The story that I most connected with that I really enjoyed reading was Sonny’s Blues, by James Baldwin. In this short story I could relate to a lot of the things the characters were feeling especially Sonny. I took away the most in this semester from Sonny’s Blues because I could understand Sonny’s feelings of using music to cope with challenges, making independent decisions in his own life and not having family fully support you, and feeling annoyed by parent-like criticism from older siblings.
When I first found out that we had to find similarities between ourselves and a character in Finding Forrester, I thought that it was going to be impossible. However, I realized that I had been thinking way too hard about finding something to write about. Not every life changing decision, experience or opportunity must be huge, although the end result most likely ends up to be. My middle school self made the decision to choose volleyball over the other sports that I had also been playing. Making that decision has opened up many doors for me, although I didn’t know what would come of it at the time. In order to be successful people often have to dare to make their dreams become a reality and have someone motivational along the way.
I chose my book Runner written by Peter mcphee because the storyline of the book looked intriguing. I was interested in reading this book because it was about a 14 year old girl running away from home and her brother went out to go find her and try and bring her home. This made me want to read the book and see what happens and see if the young girl gets found. From reading the title and the front and back of the book i felt that it was going to be about a troubled family and the little girl feeling left out so she runs away from home to get attention from her family. The subject of my book is life troubles and hardships.
