According to Cavanaugh, Boswell, Roehling, and Boudreau (2000), organizational stress is an emotional feeling that results from external demands placed on an employee in a workplace setting. Therefore, it is critical that aspects in an organizational setting, which result in feelings of stress, are properly addressed (Cropanzano, Howes, Grandey & Toth, 1997). According to Narayanan, Menon, and Spector (1999), the traditional manner in which the construct of organizational stress is assessed, is via indirect reports in the form of surveys and questionnaires. However, traditional methods of assessment in the form of surveys and questionnaires, can often miss valuable information regarding which environmental variables are truly controlling the behavior (Kushwaha, 2014). Therefore, a behavioral analytic solution is needed on order to properly assess the broad construct of workplace stress. The purpose of this essay is to suggest that by operationally defining stress, pinpointing the behaviors of stress, and conducting a behavior analytic assessment, the I/O …show more content…
Fascinatingly, by operationally defining stress, supervisors can pinpoint the target behaviors and results (Wilder, Austin, Casella 2009). Upon pinpointing these behaviors, they can be directly observed by the consultants, and the function of the behavior can be identified via this form of assessment (Austin, Carr, &Agnew, 1999). Based on the results of the assessment, the antecedents and consequences that impact the behavior can be modified to formulate an intervention, which will facilitate meaningful change. The success of the intervention formed from the results of the behavior analytic assessment, can be accessed via measurement procedures (Bucklin, Alvero, Dickinson, Austin, & Jackson,
In this paper, I expect to discuss factors which lead to stress in the workplace. Are individuals stressed in the workplace? What causes stress in the workplace? Who is mostly stressed: men or women? Are individuals being exposed to stress management techniques? By recognizing stress in the workplace, employers can act appropriately to reduce stress. The outcome can benefit social and family relationships, as well as preserve ones health and make people more productive in organizations.
Stress has been linked to hypertension, heart attacks, diabetes, asthma, chronic pain, allegeries, headaches, skin disorders, cancer, immune system weakness and decrease blood count (Cummings et al, 2005). It has also been linked to an increase risk of alcoholism and drug use. High levels of stress can lead to higher absenteeism, larger staff turnover and low productivity. The symptoms are evident in the quantitative data, with an
There are numerous challenges that organizations are faced with in order for them to survive and grow. These challenges are mainly faced by people who are tasked with making decisions on a daily basis within the organizations because a majority of the challenges are human based. The employees working in an organization are likely to suffer from occupational stress depending on their work. Occupational stress comes along when an employee is faced with demands within the workplace, and they are not able to complete or carry out these demands. The failure to complete the demands placed upon them would cause the employee mental and physical strain as their body would have a physiological reaction. According to research there are various factors that contribute to stress in the workplace. These factors include isolation, extensive working hours, negative workloads, unhealthy working environments, harassment, bullying by management, and lack of motivation or advancement opportunities. The factors mentioned are not exhaustive as there might be other causes to occupational stress depending on the individual or employees.
Stress can be caused by many different things within an organisation but the main causes of stress can be broken down into “six management standards” Anon (2009) how to tackle work related stress http://www.hse.gov.uk/ I used these areas to construct the chart below and discussed stress at a team meeting and asked my team to complete a Circle of influence around areas over which they felt they had no control Appendix 1 we also discussed what we / I could do to manage the six main causes of stress
Since organizational stress can be either positive or negative, as a leader, I would use organizational stress to reach my organization’s goals. When I first founded the organization, Marine Kids Korps Inc. there was no entity in the area that was teaching aquatics to local children. However, after enjoying no competition for over five years, suddenly we had competitors. These competitors now cut into our market of students, grants, and geographic locations.
The existing literature influence this research to be conduct due to the vague meaning that the word stress means. Also, how people when they hear the word stress and relate it with different meanings and causes. The word stress due to the lack of agreement that people have with the definition of stress
Through the process of concept analysis prominent attributes, antecedents and consequences of the phenomenon were identified. This exploration of the concept of stress is however a mere first step. In order to provide the best possible care, nurses need continued research into the nature, causes and effects of stress. Although stress can in certain instances produce a positive effect; many times stress exposure over extended periods of time, is associated with very unhealthy outcomes. For this reason, much further research is also needed into concepts that aim at ameliorating and mitigating stress’s most harmful
In fact, research reveals that school teachers experience of some highest levels of stress among working professionals (citation). When it comes to the reality of the stress pandemic, it is not the reaction itself that is the problem. Rather, it is the way we deal with stress that determines the effects of stress on our mind and body. In fact, it is stated in Feldman (2009), “our attempts to overcome stress may produce biological and physiological responses that result in health problems” (p. 417). Therefore, it is always prudent to try to find ways to deal with stress effectively before it takes an irreversible toll on us. Nonetheless, the fact remains that work stress and mental health are directly intertwined.
I would like to conclude on a few points that we have discussed. The term stress was coined by Dr. Hans Selye from the University of Montreal and the basic definition of stress is the body’s response to any demand placed on it, pleasant or unpleasant (Cunningham, 2000). Some major causes of stress are “high physical, mental and or emotional demands, lack of variety, short work cycles, fragmented or meaningless work, underutilization and high uncertainty of work” (NOHSC, 2000, P. 29). There are also psychological stressors that affect workplace but that I will save that for another
Many believe that stress is a simple problem, however it is often misunderstood and more complex than they believe (p. 181, Griffin & Moorhead, 2014). Stress is the physiological and psychological response to excessive and usually unpleasant stimulation as well as threatening events in the environment (p. 284, Schultz and Schultz, 2010). Stress appears in silent and subtle ways but this negative response affects millions of employees in all levels of all types of jobs (p. 284, Schultz and Schultz, 2010). If identified
In defining the concept of stress, occupational stress and role stress are examined based on the fact that people's lives are characterized with stressors that contribute to numerous threats to their well-being. Since the concept of role stress, which is related to occupational stress, is not found in the dictionary, the starting point in the definition and analysis of stress is the use of the term stress (Riahi, 2011, p.722). While stress was initially described as the experience of some form of strain by any living organisms, the description has been expanded to a phenomenon that contributes to severe and distressing experience,
When I originally enrolled for this course I figured my background knowledge on the subject was extensive enough that I might not learn all that much. With the upcoming completion of my second degree, now in Human Relations, my first being as a registered nurse, stress management has always played a role in my educational career. I did not realize, however, the extent to which stress connects both directly and indirectly to my life. All of the general findings of stress correlate exactly as expected with myself.
Stress: the replication of the lack of correspondence between an individual and their desired goals
Stress is a common issue that faces every human being in different times. Stress can be caused by many factors, but one of the main reasons is work which is called occupational stress or work-related stress. Job stress does not only affect the employees’ performance within an organization, but also it affects their general health. Stress has become a challenge for employers now because high level stress results in low productivity, increased absenteeism and other problems like alcoholism, drug abuse and hypertension (Ahmad, Mohamed. 2017). It became a major problem for employers especially in developing countries where they don’t realize the importance of work-life balance and the impact of stress on the productivity level and the job
Organizational behavior is the study of individuals and their behavior within an organized work environment. Many different facets of the business world make up organizational behavior including: motivation, personality, leadership, communication, and so much more. However, I plan to focus on the topic of stress within organizational behavior. Depending on how it is handled stress can be both positive and negative. However, when it is not recognized and handled properly stress can cause serious problems. Throughout this paper I
