On August 28th 1963, Civil Rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr. made his infamous “I Have a Dream” speech. In the speech, King confronts the mistreatment of the African American community and the lack of free will they contain in society. Throughout the mid-1900s, the Civil Rights Movement took place, influenced by centuries of cruelty towards the African Americans.. The most influential speech in the modern era was said in front of thousands of Civil Rights activists who all shared a common goal; to fight for the respect and to be treated as equals within the United States.

Martin Luther King’s speech was made after the March on Washington on August 28, 1963. He delivered the “I Have a dream” speech on the Lincoln Memorial steps. He verbalized this speech to millions of people blacks and whites. This is one of the greatest speeches because it has many elements like repetition, assonance and consonance, pathos, logos, and ethos.

“I Have a Dream” remains one of the most inspirational speeches in American history. After the march, Dr. King and the other organizers attended a reception at the White House, where President Kennedy congratulated them on their success.

King’s speech was delivered during the March for Freedom in Washington August 28, 1963. With a determined tone, is motivation was to speak about racism of blacks in America. Slavery had long been abolished since 1865 with the 13th amendment. By law, African Americans were “free”, but the concept of freedom was like a myth. “The life of the Negro was still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination”. (King 9-10). There were no Civil or economical rights, blacks were still bounded by invisible chains of calamity. The purpose of King’s analysis is to bring hope to the people of color. Hope for a better tommorrow, hope that all their labor will not go in vain and hope that their children will live a better life. Moreover, He also argued to convince his audience that there should be an end to racism and equal rights for all races. He argued that freedom should be for all Americans, not just white Americans.

He makes a point that the Emancipation Proclamation declared freedom for the black man. However, it was the freedom that never existed, since it was a toothless tiger. He says that Declaration of Independence has given it all, everyone with color or white, the freedom to quest happiness, meaning jobs and better civil rights legislation.

Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” was a very inspiring and influential speech in American history and a stand for equal rights. His speech confronted racism in America. Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech to the thousands of African Americans who had marched on Washington, D.C. at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. The date of the speech was August 28, 1963, but it is one that will live for generations. Of course his purpose was to convince his audience on several fronts: he sought to persuade the black community to stand up for the rights afforded them under the Constitution, and he also sought to demonstrate to the white community that a "simple" black man could so effectively use powers of persuasion that they too would have reason to join the cause. He stated in his opening sentence that the event at which he spoke
