The document 10-4 was written by IBN BATTUTA from Travels in Asia and Africa. This document was based on his impressions of the east coast of Africa, a description of his trip across the desert, and his thoughts on the Kingdom of Mali. The viewpoint of this document is from Ibn Battuta. It suggests to me that this document was biased, because it is only based on one person’s opinions and viewpoint.
A brief summary of his life is paramount in the understanding of Battuta’s impressions and reactions to West African society. Abu Abdallah ibn Battuta was born in Morocco in 1304. Olaudah was born in West Africa, in 1745, in the village of the Igbo tribe, where his father was the chief. Recent scholars think that he might of been born in the New World instead of Africa (Foner, page 130 ). When he was 11 he was kidnapped by slave traders along with some of his family. At that point, he was forced into the Atlantic Slave Trade and was considered a slave. He was then sent to Barbados. Still traveling in the slave trade system, he went to Virginia (the English colony where most of the tobacco was grown). From Virginia, Olaudah was sold to a British sea captain. The British sea captain changed his name from Olaudah Equiano, to Gustavus Vassa (one of the many names people gave him in his life). While “Gustavus” was with the sea captain, he was enrolled in an English school where he learned how to read and write, which he used greatly later on is his life. Bastet (also known as Baast, Bast, or Baset) is the Egyptian goddess of cats, fire, the moon, pregnancy, and homes. However, today she is generally thought of as a cat goddess. Like most Egyptian gods, Bastet had two natures: fierce and affectionate. Bast was seen as a protective goddess, because of the way cats protected households and crops from vermin. However, she was also regarded as a fierce fighter, and it was said that the pharaohs would ask her to protect them in battle.
