Abstract
This paper will be analysing the IDEO’s shopping cart project which was completed in just a mere seven days. This paper will also try to provide insights on how the attributes used by IDEO organisation can be effectively implemented in enhancing and encouraging innovation in any organisation.
Attributes enhancing innovation in an organisation
Innovation in any organisation is a very crucial thing. Every organisation, both related to goods and services, value innovation. In the fast paced growing and advancing world as of today, innovation is the key that leads to any organisation’s success or failure. In organisations, there are few thing leaders could do which are much more essential then encouraging the helping behaviour within their organisation (Amabile, Fisher & Pillemer, 2014). With the activities the leaders do and the vision they have, the organisational leaders promote innovation in their organisation as they know if their organisation is not innovative, they would be left far behind in the marketplace. Here, by taking the example of IDEO, it is tried to explain how leaders can encourage organisational innovation.
IDEO is considered as one of the most influential product development firm in the world. IDEO is such a company that has designed almost
Innovation may be linked to positive changes in efficiency, productivity, quality and competitiveness, among other factors. Benefits of innovation could be the improvement in the workforce. By improving the workforce an organisation will benefit from increased productivity and improved morale and lower staff turnover. Employees will feel more valued which therefore increases motivation. This is beneficial to employers because it provides the organisation with knowledgeable, reliable staff who will have a more positive contribution to the needs of the organisation. Staff are a valuable source of innovation, even if it is not expected as a major part of their job. An innovative work environment means being creative and try new techniques. As Albert Einstein said “if you always do what you’ve always done, you will get what you’ve always got.”
Innovations form the main sources of competitive advantages and are always of significance for the growth of a company. Companies or organizations put their greater efforts in improving their performance by finding new ideas and knowledge on the best way of beating their competitors and therefore give satisfaction to their customers. There are various factors involved in the innovation design system which can be either internal or external.
In this final essay I have included works from IDS 101 Course: Essay collection week 1 titled Self-Reflection Profile Essay, week 2 Titled Critical Analysis Essay, and Week 7 Final Research project. I have also included three of, what I consider, my best discussion posts. Throughout my eight weeks in IDS 101 cornerstone, I have learned principles and techniques related to critical thinking, research writing, and digital communications.
Alongside the entrepreneur spirit, Innovation is the process of taking new ideas and implementing them into the market. Key word being “new”, an innovation can be sometimes viewed as the application to better solutions that meet new demand-requirements, inarticulated needs or existing market needs. Innovative ideas range from: goods, services, products, processes, services, technologies or ideas that create value for which customers will pay for. For an idea to be an innovation, it must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need. This means is that one must be ready and willing put their new idea to the test. On the other hand, there is recognition that “innovation is also critical to cultural, environmental, social, and artistic progress as well” (Bullinger, 2006). With this stated, high-tech innovation is ultimately the reason why we can be thankful for the many new conveniences of the 21st century. Although we might see the forefront of innovation being very prominent in today’s world, innovation is truly nothing new. From the start of modern man times, innovative ideas have paved the way for civilization to advance and develop into what we are today and at the same time, we have barely begin to chip away at the tip of the iceberg of our true human potential. Some scholars believe that innovation is a
A wise man once said, “The only permanent thing in the world is change,” an adage that rings especially true for organizations in this fast-changing era of technology and communication. Daft very deftly puts the inescapable need for change in three simple words, “Innovate or Perish” in his book “Understanding the Theory & Design of Organizations” [2].
The environment of an individual including culture of the company, management style, level of stress at work, etc…are also very important factors.
This research intends to explore innovation at an individual level, but in a context, where the roles and functions of an organization appear eminent either as a promoter or an inhibitor of innovation.
For an organization to continually grow, innovation must be embedded in its culture. Innovation is a behavior that is required to be a part of every employee’s job. This necessitates an organization to present its employees with platforms wherein they can express their ideas such as the LIG program, as in the case of General Electric, to deliberate organic growth day in and day out. Innovation is effectively advertized in an organization where managers individually and collectively lead by example by way of their behavior, their
The Breakthrough Innovation Framework, or BrinnovationTM, incorporates Kotter’s Leading Change model, while emphasizing a framework of innovation (Gupta, 2011). The Brinnovation framework accentuates the abilities and talents of those in the system, with its success depending on a change in the organization’s culture to embrace innovation (Gupta, 2011). The leadership can achieve a transformation in organizational thinking by applying Kotter’s eight-step plan, focusing on creativity (Gupta, 2011).
As Albert Einstein said, “If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” This quote is applicable for organisation and fully underpins the value of having a culture of innovation in order to meet short, medium and long term objectives.
Innovation refers to finding new ways to improve the existing products, services, processes, technologies, and employee performance in an organizational setup. In today's competitive business environment, organizations have to focus on bringing innovation in each and every aspect of their business operations; like products or service offerings, enterprise resource planning systems, marketing and promotional efforts, and organizational structure. The market challenges and competitive pressures also force organizations to use a blend of all these innovation processes in their business activities. Therefore, it is vital to give an equal focus on product innovation, process innovation, marketing innovation, and organizational innovation within the limited organizational resources and capabilities.
Innovation is the process by which ideas are created, selected and implemented to bring about profitable change to organisations. Innovations come as a result of an identified need for organisations to change their current processes, activities or operations. Andriopoulos and Dawson (2009) explain that organisational change is ‘new ways of organizing and working’. They explain that change occur in two dimensions – movement of state and scope of change.
IDEO has a flat organization; there are no formal titles, dress codes, organizational charts or permanent job assignments. The company is made up of project teams organized around IDEO's innovation process, which is focused on constant brainstorming and prototyping; where no idea is a bad idea, in the early stages of a project, and trial and error is an expectation on the journey to getting it right. The organization is driven by team collaboration and performance, built around creativity, innovation, and idea and information sharing to develop breakthrough products and achieve customer satisfaction by understanding customer needs and input. It is an adhocracy of two core groups tied together by IDEO's
Companies live and breathe innovation; or, at the terribly least, notice it basic to their success. Such companies are those that others ought to emulate for they recognize that to do business, as Peter Drucker prompt in an exceedingly recent Harvard Business review article, “Every firm—not simply businesses—needs one core competence: innovation.”
Effective leaders need to be creative and innovative. Effective leaders need to understand that the blood of the organization which they are leading lays innovation and creativity (Swid, 2015). Creation of new ideas can result in programs which are superior to the already planned or established plans. The responsibility of the leadership is to engage appropriate people in the right times, to the appropriate degree but in creative manner. Employee creativity is also enhanced by leaders who are inspirational. Any business
