I had a very strong reaction to this video, and fact, I even started to tear up a little. I think this video is very well done! It reminds all of us why we got into teaching: to teach and to help kids.
The purpose of this video was to humanize the IEP process. As stated in the description, "I want to show him in a positive light and to give the IEP team a face to put with his name and diagnosis” (IEP Video).
If I were a CSE member for her son’s meeting, I would have a newfound passion for my job. It would recap how important the work I do is. It would also remind me that these students are people that need our help, not just a name and diagnosis. "I want to live in a world where there isn't prejudice or discrimination just because of disabilities"

Parents are key players in the education process and are especially important when developing an IEP. “They can offer insight into how their child learns, what his or her interests are, and other aspects of the child that only a parent can know” (A Guide to the Individualized Education Program). Furthermore, Polloway et al states, “Parental involvement, in particular, has resulted in increased mutual support and cooperation between home and school” (33).
In the case of students who do not have parents that can advocate for them, this video demonstrates the importance of student input when the boy said, "Ask me what I need and want… Most of the time I know what will help" (IEP Video). Sometimes this is an overlooked part of the process, but it is a vital part. Students have the best understanding of themselves and their needs and so we want to include their voice in the IEP.
In short, this video definitely would accomplish its purpose; it would prompt members of the IEP to think about the importance of their task, motivate team members to create and implement the best possible IEP. This video is a great example of why parent and student involvement is important. They have a unique view that needs to be
There are many ways for parents to actively participate in their student’s education. Scholastic.com recommends including tips for helping parents get involved. In this 6th grade classroom, each EC parent will receive a copy of their child’s IEP goals, along with the date of their annual review and re-evaluation date, if applicable to this school year. Parents are asked if there is a preferred day of the week and time to best schedule future IEP meetings. Attached to this information will be contact information for both co-teachers including email address, school phone number, planning time and a calendar denoting the designated monthly parent-teacher conference days and times. Additional components of the parental involvement piece to Curriculum Night includes an invitation to join our PTO, sports schedules, and information about proctoring. Parents are also encouraged to occasionally eat lunch with their child in the school
IEP’s which are individualized educational plan are very important documents, they are used to meet a student’s educational needs. There are certain criteria a student must meet to be eligible for special education services. A team of people work together to create
Then the article discusses the similarities and differences between an IFSP and an IEP. The IFSP starts with a child who is younger than three years old. This takes place in the family home or a child care center. The importance of the IFSP is to help the parents learn and deal with their child’s disability. The focus stays on the parent’s role in supporting the child’s learning development (Ray, Pewitt-Kinder, George, 2009). When the child turns three and older then they transition to an IEP. The IEP is different from the IFSP as it focuses more on the child. The child is evaluated and given goals specifically for them to help them to learn in a school environment. Although they focus on different people they are the same in that it is important
There was a point in the videos pertaining to discipline, which I found to be very important. The video stated that when learning disabled students get in trouble, they often do not understand why because of their perception of the event or issue. It is important that teachers take the time to get a better understanding of how a student may have perceived a task.
IEP stands for an Individualized Education Program, it is a document, that was developed in conjunction with the parent/guardian, is an individually tailored statement describing an educational plan for each learner with exceptionalities There are five major points that are to address the present level of academic functioning personnel as present level of performance, annual goals and accompanying instructional objectives, educational services to be proved, the degree to which the pupil will be able to participate in general education programs, and plans for initiating services and length of services and length
I have distinctly applied for Special Needs Education because special education has always been what’s near and dear to me in the field of education. Being a special education teacher would be an inevitably rewarding job, in which I get to watch my students grow, as I celebrate their small breakthroughs and victories with them. These small breakthroughs and victories will improve over time and turn into giant leaps, which will leave a lasting impact and ultimately change the child’s life. Beyond just educating children with special needs, I aspire to educate the public about children with special needs and special education. By doing so, I hope to remove any uncertainty and fear the public has on this group of children. Not only do I want to impart knowledge on these special children, I also want to advocate for them, which is something that goes
In the video, it discusses the main purpose the to discuss the student behavior. I also notice that they included a parking lot for when the meeting gets out of topic we can write down in the parking lot and address them at a later the end of the meeting. Also, the team must discuss the main goals to create strategies to help with the student educational goals. In the video, it discusses the student overall progress and behavior and set out goals was to create strategies to improve student behavior at school. In addition, reviewing to IEP checklist I believe the difficult part is not getting off the topic. They will be parents that are unhappy or don’t agree with the results that can cause tension and frustration. The purpose of the meeting is to collaborate and coming into agreement strategies to improve on the child goals. It will be difficult to stick with the agenda when the parent has other topics to address instead of the goals that are presented. Facilitated IEP are beneficial with complex IEP meeting issues especially when knowing beforehand situations have been complex. A facilitator supports the general IEP team that is conducting a IEP meeting. The team members run the meeting while the facilitator main purpose is to intervene and upholds the peace, while assisting the team to focus on the real issues and goals in
Several students have IEP (individualized education plans) at my school. An IEP puts into writing the specific, individualized requirements for the child's education that must be fulfilled for that child to have an education which is commensurate with
In the American system the curriculum serves 5, 000 students and more than 20 countries and we need to review and look at the IEP process. The question that has spark concerns is to look at students direct IEP and how we can look to evaluate it? How students benefits from an IEP and what would be the first logical steps to change the process. We have a mixture of students who are not all English speaking students from all backgrounds and have some disabilities. I’m not here to complain about the teachers in your system, you have wonderful teachers who capture student’s interest and encourage students learning. But we are here to address the IEP’s process issue.
On Monday, September 25th, I was invited to sit in as the general education teacher in an IEP team meeting. The meeting was held for a student with down syndrome, identified at birth, who qualified for services under the category of intellectually disabled. This student is in a self-contained classroom, therefore, his current teacher, served as the special education teacher for the purposes of this meeting. Meeting participants included: Mrs. Fields (ARC Advocate), Dr. Neiman (Main speech therapist, participated over the phone), Mrs. Bennett (LEA representative), Mrs. Diggs (ACS EC Director, as a precaution because the parents expressed concerns for the education of their child), Mrs. Sikes (General Education Teacher), Mrs. Bernard
The IEP team met today to conduct an annual review for Daniella Rayon. Two separate notifications were sent out to the parent/ student. SB 1108 was addressed and signed at the start of the meeting. The parent and student were both present.
The webinar I watched was Introduction to Individualized Education Programs (IEP). This webinar was designed to provide parents with information regarding the IEP. It first began by listing the disabilities that were considered eligible for services in the state of Nevada. Then the webinar discussed the different laws that govern and shape special education today, such as the 14th Amendment, the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and the Nevada Administrative Code (NAC). The webinar also described the evaluation process, and how the evaluation results are the cornerstone of the IEP. Next the webinar discussed when the IEP should be in place, and how transitioning records from one school to the next takes place. The parent, the special
In conclusion, this video had an enormous amount of information and I feel that this summary does not do it justice. However as teachers we must learn and continue to learn all the correct ways in which to aid our students to reach their greatest potential. It is not about us any more, it is about the children and teaching them how to properly behave and treat others will eventually create a better and better
The intervention for a student’s access to education is created and implemented through an Individualize Education Program (IEP). The IEP is a tool that defines what type of needs the student has and sets
After viewing the videos, I have better understanding that parents with a child with a disability will face many difficult choices, interaction with many different professionals and specialists, and an ongoing need for information and services. Their normal lives get challenged and these parents do really need a lot of support from their families and communities. As an educator, I would like to share the knowledge, assistance, understanding, and support as much as possible rather than criticizing the behaviors of their children.
