Wishing I Could Live in Mayberry
The voice of Sheriff Andy Taylor or Andy Griffith was silenced on July 3, 2012. I will always remember him living in fictional Mayberry, North Carolina and being a good-natured sheriff in the long running TV show “The Andy Griffith Show”. He also portrayed a shrewd Atlanta, Georgia defense attorney in the TV drama “Matlock”. But for me he will always be amiable and happy living in Mayberry with his aunt Bee and little boy Opie. The fictional town of Mayberry was always one in which I could live having been born and raised in New York City.
Andy Griffith was born on June 1. 1926 in Mount Airy, North Carolina as Andrew Samuel Griffith. Finding his way into the acting field was not easy. He made his debut in a feature film “A Face in the Crowd” playing a drifter who becomes a

The show gave everyone a favorite character to follow. There was Deputy Barney Fife played by Don Knotts, Aunt Bee by Francis Bavier, gas station attendant Gomer Pyle by Jim Nabors, Floyd the barber by Howard McNear and Otis the town drunk by Hal Smith. The show later also showed delightful episodes with Sheriff Taylor and Deputy Fife and their girlfriends. Andy’s girlfriend was Helen Crump played by Aneta Corsaut and Barney’s Thelma Lou by Betty Lynn. Two spinoffs came from this show “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” and “Mayberry R.F.D.” It was a delight to finally see Sheriff Taylor marry Helen and I remember the wedding took place in the first episode of “Mayberry R.F.D.”
I always enjoy returning to Mayberry in the reruns and still watch some of the episodes on YouTube. Andy Griffith went on to play in other TV series and made-for TV movies. His final roll was in the 2009 movie “Play the Game”. The Andy Griffith Museum opened in Mount Airy, N.C. in 2009. He died of a heart attack at this home on Roanoke Island in North

The third contrast between these shows was the filming style that was used. I Love Lucy was produced using a multi-camera telefilm method. The show was also filmed in front of a live audience, which gave the sitcom more life. The Andy Griffith Show on the other hand was filmed using a single-camera technique. Those factors alone changed the feel of the shows. With The Andy Griffith Show, you could feel him walking though out the town. With I Love Lucy there was the looking in
