As a counselor, one is put in a position of power from the beginning of every session. When contemplating the subject of diversity in relation to ethics, several questions may arise for the first-year counseling student. These inquiries may be broad or rather specific. Primarily, one may wonder if the topic of diversity itself is such a significant subject that it is outlined in a code of ethics. Secondarily, if diversity is addressed, is it treated as a singular subject or broadly covered under an umbrella of principles? Consequently, every student should strive to understand how professionals best respond to the range of issues involving diversity. One may retort that while “everyday” people may dismiss the issue, diversity is indeed an important matter worthy of attention,
Diverse populations are characterized by clients from different facets of life, this can include, gender, race, religion, age, and various other factors (Cormier, 2014). This trend of diverse populations is expected to grow into the 21st century (Cormier, 2014). Counselors must recognize these differences and built the competency to serve various populations (Cormier, 2014). When faced with adversity, most people go through stages of change to process deviations that come along with adversity. A person’s diversity may effect how they proceed through these changes.

As individuals, we are diverse based on the background, experience, ability, race, language, etc. which impact the lens through which we view others and ourselves. As diverse individual, we may belong to dominant or non- dominant groups. Thus, either we have power and privilege or we experience discrimination and oppression. Further, we are shelled with diversity, ethnicity, and multiculturalism issues. Counselors have some ethical primary responsibilities to respect the dignity and promote the welfare of the client (A.1.a), “honoring diversity and embracing a multicultural approach in support of the worth, dignity” and “promoting social justice” (Herlihy & Corey, 2014, p. 3)
The importance of diversity in counselling has been the subject of much research over the last 50 years Patterson (1996) and is aimed at preventing inequalities among different population groups regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, social class, age, physical abilities and religious beliefs/beliefs. Diversity does not simply refer to race or even culture; it’s everywhere. We are all diverse, meaning we are all different from one another. The book The Other Wes Moore we see two kids with the same name, but very different lives that they live. Wes and Wes are similar in ways, but in the end turn out nothing like each other. One chose to lead his life in a better path, while the other sticks with a path that ultimately destructs his life. In this paper, I will discuss what diversity means to me, messages that I learned about various minorities or majorities when I was a child, if my views have changed, when diversity influenced my life, and the situation when it influenced me. Some other things that I will discuss also are the main characters of the book, examples of diversity involving the main characters, and which character I related with the most in this book.
Did the Age of Jim Crow ever end? Americans see “race” as a defined, indubitable feature of nature. Racism- the act of ascribing bone deep features to people to then humiliate, reduce, and destroy them- inevitably follows from this inalterable condition. White supremacist ideals, for instance, espouse unfounded ideas that revere the white man and scorn those of color, while also serving as a nonsensical justification for practices such as slavery, racial segregation, and Jim Crow. In “The Trouble with Diversity”, Walter Benn Michaels dismisses the concept and veracity behind race, as if it weren’t a societal issue worth addressing. To ignore the reality of race would be the equivalent of ignoring the plight and shared experiences of minority groups. “The Trouble with Diversity” insinuates that “diversity” is incompatible with the society we live in; this does not mean that people of color should have to encounter racial prejudices, whether in subtle or discernible ways.

Counselors will develop the skills and intervention strategies that will be best used for their cultural diverse clients. Based upon the idea that counseling was mostly set for white clients, counselors will need to make adjustments especially with models of counseling that may be used based upon the ethnicity of the client.

The articles “ Can Diversity Destroy Us?” and “A.D.2041: End of White America?” are written by Patrick J. Buchanan who is author and also the former assistant to the president for communications. These articles primarily talk about the idea of diversity in the Unites State and why Buchanan thought it could destroy America and why it is bad. On the other hand, in the article, “Model of America Ethnic Relation: a Historical Prospective”, Fredrickson discusses the ethnic between races and religions through out the American history. The United States is home to many diverse ethnicities, identities, and cultures. However, some areas of the country unfortunately have an absence of diversity—most notably small towns and cities. This is a problem in today’s society due to the fact that a lack of experience and interaction with diversity might eventually lead to the growth of prejudice and bigotry. As a racial minority in a small city, this issue is especially significant to me because I have been a recipient of ignorant and stereotypical remarks. Therefore, I believe that it is imperative for a population to encourage acknowledgement and acceptance of diversity in order to solve the problem of prejudice and ignorance within a community.
