“If imperialism is not banished from the country, China will perish as a nation. If China does not perish, then imperialism cannot remain,” this is what military leader Chiang Kai- Shek said when foreign imperialism was introduced to China. This is one example in history where imperialism has had a negative effect on a country; however, there are many other examples like the Great Game, the Scramble for Africa, and the annexation of Hawaii. In all of these historical events, the mother country claimed or tried to claim other countries for their own benefit. Regardless, of the impact they might have on the country; imperialism has always been driven by economic or strategic interests.

Before Hawaii was a state of the United States, the United States was concerned about Hawaii becoming part of an European empire. The Europeans wanted Hawaii because of the economic benefits it could give them with its’ sugar cane production. However, the United States wanted Hawaii for its’ economical benefits and to extend U.S. territory into the Pacific. When the monarch of Hawaii wanted a stronger monarchy in 1893, the U.S. deposed her. This shows us, that the U.S. did not want to benefit Hawaii and let it prosper as a country. The U.S. only wanted the benefits that Hawaii could give to them and when that was threatened they started a coup. The administration of president Benjamin Harrison even encouraged the takeover, and dispatched sailors to surround the royal palace. The U.S. was driven by the benefits that Hawaii possessed that they were willing to forcefully remove the monarch of Hawaii.
