“If imperialism is not banished from the country, China will perish as a nation. If China does not perish, then imperialism cannot remain,” this is what military leader Chiang Kai- Shek said when foreign imperialism was introduced to China. This is one example in history where imperialism has had a negative effect on a country; however, there are many other examples like the Great Game, the Scramble for Africa, and the annexation of Hawaii. In all of these historical events, the mother country claimed or tried to claim other countries for their own benefit. Regardless, of the impact they might have on the country; imperialism has always been driven by economic or strategic interests.
The Great Game is a great example of when imperialism was driven by strategic interests of the mother country. The Great Game was a diplomatic confrontation that

Before Hawaii was a state of the United States, the United States was concerned about Hawaii becoming part of an European empire. The Europeans wanted Hawaii because of the economic benefits it could give them with its’ sugar cane production. However, the United States wanted Hawaii for its’ economical benefits and to extend U.S. territory into the Pacific. When the monarch of Hawaii wanted a stronger monarchy in 1893, the U.S. deposed her. This shows us, that the U.S. did not want to benefit Hawaii and let it prosper as a country. The U.S. only wanted the benefits that Hawaii could give to them and when that was threatened they started a coup. The administration of president Benjamin Harrison even encouraged the takeover, and dispatched sailors to surround the royal palace. The U.S. was driven by the benefits that Hawaii possessed that they were willing to forcefully remove the monarch of Hawaii. Eventually, Hawaii became a state of the U.S. so that they would permanently have the economical and strategic benefits of
Imperialism was the cause of the economy to beginning to boom in numbers in China. China’s sudden wealth made some eastern nations such as Japan and France very curious. These nations believed that if China was to be colonized that it would make it so much easier for them to have trade routes to and from China. Not only is imperialism impacting the economy but also the culture of China. China’s culture began to change when people all over Europe began to move to China. This is what made the culture of China so diverse. Without Imperialism China would not be the nation that it is today.
Throughout history, many powerful nations interfered with nations that were weaker than they were. This form of sabotaging a nation is economic, political or cultural life is called as imperialism. Imperialism is often separated into two sects. The first one is old imperialism, which was the period from the 1500s to the 1800s, where European nation started to colonize many areas such as the Americas, and parts of Southeast Asia. On the other hand, the new imperialism was the period between the years “1870-1914”, where Europe became more focused on expanding their land into Asia and Africa. Imperialism had many pros and cons. In addition, it also had many causes led by the feeling of nationalism.
In many ways America was justifiable in making Hawaii apart of their territory due to the fact that they were not large enough to self govern themselves and could benefit from trading resources. Albert Beveridge who was an American historian stated that "the rule of liberty that all just government derives its authority from the consent of the governed, applies only to those who are capable of self government" (Text 3). This meant that if a country did not have the power to rule themselves, that they have no say in whether or not someone can take them over. He argued that Hawaii was to small to self govern and protect itself from outside countries. By America making Hawaii its territory, it allowed the island to be protected and governed by
After discovering how the island was conspired into this seizure, Cleveland recommended that the monarchy should be restored. In a message to the Congress, specifically addressing Minister Wallis, Cleveland urged to restore the condition of the island as it was previous to the “lawless landing” of the forces of the United States at the Honolulu. He proposed that “the past should be buried” and the “restored Government should resume its authority” without being affected. But Congress did not act upon this command. In 1894, Hawaii came under Stanford Dole, who, declared himself president of the Republic without much consent from the natives. The queen was placed under house arrest held for the guilt of treason. A fine of $5000 was also placed on her. In 1896, the Republican Party called for the annexation of Hawaii in the presidential election. In 1990, Hawaii legitimately became a U.S. territory under William McKinley, out of fear that it may be annexed by Japan. He also feared that he lacked majority support for the annexation in the Senate. Eventually, several immigrant laborers from all over the world joined the sugar business. Today Hawaii comprises of people belonging to China, Japan, and Portuguese from Madeira and the Azores including Puerto Rican’s, Koreans and Filipinos. This resulted in Hawaii
Imperialism is defined as a policy of extending a country 's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Countries during the Industrial Revolution wanted to imperialize due to social, political, and economic reasons. As early as the mid 1800’s, the European countries craved the idea of power and conquering new lands in order to obtain resources/raw materials. They took over Africa, the Ottoman Empire, India, and Southeast Asia due to this as well as for their convenient location. They believed that the more land one owns, the stronger the country would be. Although some can argue the fact that imperialism had a detrimental effect because these countries lost their culture and independence, the end result of this was definitely more positive than negative both short term and long term. These countries would not be as thriving today if this had not happened. European Imperialism in parts of the Middle east, Africa, and Asia had more of a positive impact on the world due to education, modernization, healthcare/sanitation, and more trade/resources used.
In the late 1890's, the United States experiences imperialistic feelings rise again. The country as a whole feared our resources running out, so there was an increase in foreign trade. The intellectual justification for the idea of the New Manifest Destiny was social Darwinism, or survival of the fittest. In Latin America, the United States sided with Venezuela against Britain over border disputes; we were willing to go to war with Britain on the matter and we were protecting our own interests there. In 1898, France and Britain annexed Hawaii to the United States, which was an
China was impacted by Imperialism in a big way. The imperialism in china started because of Opium Trade. The british were the start of the Opium Trade. The Chinese people were pulled in to the drug because they were addicted to it. The people who traded the the drug had become aware that it was becoming a problem. So, they thought stopping would solve it but at this point the Chinese people were in need of it because of how high their addiction was. When the Chinese saw that the trade was being pulled back by the british they turned to fight and created a war between the two. Obviously at the time Britain had the most resourceful and powerful military on the planet, so they undoubtedly won the war.
“Thus it appears that Hawaii was taken possession of by the United States forces without the consent or wish of the government of the islands, or of anybody else so far as shown, except the United States Minister.” President Cleveland’s words remind me of how cruel America took over Hawaii. Hawaii had been a Monarchy for many years, just as the United States has been a republic many years, yet the United States selfishly overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy just so they could have a naval base in the Pacific Ocean. Throughout this research paper I will support my claim of why I think it was not right that Hawaii was illegally annexed.
When Theodore Roosevelt went to Colombia he asked the government of Colombia if he could build a canal through their land so the US could import items more efficiently. The Colombians said no, but Roosevelt having a plan B went to Panama and encouraged them to break free from Colombian rule. Panama, influenced by the President of the United States at the time did break free and said yes for the US to build a canal through their country. They gained Hawai’i through trapping the Queen of Hawai’i in her palace with local militia while the farm owners slowly sold their land to the US government. By the time the queen was released, it was too late. All of Hawai’i was owned by the US government now. This showed their selfish ambitions because if the US did not get what they wanted through diplomacy then they will resort to cheap tricks. Such as keeping the queen in her palace while the farmers sold all their land, and persuading Panama to separate from
After the Civil War, the United States struggled to keep up with other countries in the world. While figuring out how fix the corruption in the American government, the other countries were practicing imperialism. Imperialism is a policy by which strong nations extend their political, military, and economic control over weaker territories. Realizing that we needed to make a change, the United States started working towards the goal of practicing imperialism as well. To do this, our first few targets were Hawaii and Alaska. In 1867, we sought to buy Alaska because they had resources that we wanted, such as lumber and minerals. This was known as Seward’s Folly after the Secretary of State William Seward. In 1898, our desire of Hawaii was fulfilled when they agreed to annexation. However, this was not without struggle. King Kalakaua of Hawaii wanted the white planters to vote, but when he died, his sister, Queen Liliuokalani reversed his decision. She took away the power of whites, which eventually led to her being overthrown with the help of the United States Marines. The Hawaiian people opposed annexation, but when Mckinley became president, Hawaii was declared American territory. Sanford B. Doyle, a white plantation owner who asked for the annexation, became the first governor of Hawaii. This addition into American territory drastically influenced our economy.
| The United States and Europe claimed political power over the Polynesian Islands which led to the United States overthrowing the individual monarchies of the islands.
Imperialism is a policy that has positively impacted nations and their development for centuries. This was especially true during the late 1800s and early 1900s, when many European nations began to expand far beyond their borders. Imperialistic policies were not only good for the development of countries that were expanding, but in many cases, the countries that were being expanded into as well.
The last reigning monarch of Hawaii did everything in her power to oppose the annexation of Hawaii into the United States without the use of violent protests. Her name was Queen Liliuokalani. She came to power in Hawaii during a time when white planters ran the economy on the main islands. She succeeded her brother, the great Hawaiian king, King Kalakaua, who also happened to her her beloved brother. She took a stand for many things such as the Bayonet Constitution, which weakened Hawaii’s monarchy and stripped its monarchs of their power; the Reciprocity Treaty, which forced Hawaii to trade with the United States; imprisonment in the form of house arrest for her stand against the United States citizens
Imperialism is the domination of a weaker country by a stronger country. For instance Britain dominated India and China in the mid 1880s to the beginning of the 20th century. Imperialism has had both a positive and negative effects on the countries involved. Britain was imperialistic for many reasons, it could dominate because it had the technology and power to do so. They also needed land to acquire raw materials for growing markets.
Kinzer makes it clear that the decisions to overthrow the governments of Hawaii, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Philippines, Nicaragua, and Honduras were purely economic. American companies wanted to secure more profits by exploiting people and land outside the United States. So they did. And when the leaders of those countries wanted to take hold of their rightful property, the American companies retaliated by taking full control. Hawaii was bullied into submission.
