The reason I chose this issue is because throughout this course, I’ve been very passionate about climate change and I really wanted my last project to take the same focus as well. Additionally, there are many reasonable policies like carbon taxes, which will truly help Canada become more environmentally sustainable. Since being granted full sovereignty, Canada has had a growing role as a major world player. Much of their international growth has to do with its close ties to the United States and the United Kingdom. However, the country has also undergone huge change and refocusing on a domestic level. Canada’s sovereign and morally just approach can be seen in many events in the 20th century, such as in the Second World War, the Korean War, the Suez Crisis and the Vietnam War. As well, Canada’s imperfect, yet improving immigration policy displays the acceptance and unbiased approach Canada has towards people of different backgrounds. Despite some minor missteps and impediments, Canada would make an excellent choice for UN Advisor Country for the reason that Canada has spearheaded much global intervention, especially for such a small (population-wise) and unassuming country.

Additionally, to the theme of peace, Canada generally strays away from military force or power as Justin Trudeau has ended Canada’s combat missions in Iraq and Syria to rather engage in humanitarian efforts, just as his campaign outlined. Onward, Canada is an active member of the TPP, WTO, G7, G20 and the UN as Canada is currently bidding for a 2021 seat on the UN’s Security Council. In the global arena, Trudeau has implemented a refugee policy accepting 25, 000 Syrian refugees while lifting the Visa requirement on Mexican visitors. Trudeau has also committed $2.65 billion to help developing nations combat climate change. More notably, Canada is a member of NAFTA and NATO, both of which Donald Trump is reluctant to continually engage in, partly due to his relationship with Vladimir Putin.

Canadian Contribution as a middle power and their adaptation from foreign policy between Harper and Trudeau has allowed Canada to continue to be a major factor in global politics. Many changes the Harper made to the current government system are being continued by Trudeau.

The following paper will provide an overview of Canada’s current climate change policy, under the Trudeau administration. Then, an overview of the climate change policy for the Trump administration will be introduced. Finally, Canada’s options in the face of these circumstances will be introduced, along with the decision that should be made for Canada’s future policy on climate change.
