In-Class Peer Review Paper

Peer review is more than just reading someone’s paper and tell them if it’s good or bad. It’s about explaining them what their weaknesses and strengths are. It can also help you as a writer by giving you ideas of how to put stuff together in your essay. Personally, I believe that I was really engaged when it came to peer reviewing. I truly appreciated the criticism and honesty of my peers and I hope that they feel the same way about me. I tried to explain to them what was wrong with each page step by step and what are some of their weaknesses and strengths.

In The Everyday Writer, I strongly believed that chapter 10 “Reviewing & Revising” was most helpful as I could relate to some of its statements. I believed that by reviewing my work, I’m bound to discover mistakes. By doing so, I could make minor adjustment to my work. However, sometimes looking over my own work isn’t enough so, that’s where a peer reviewer comes in. A peer reviewer is someone who challenges your work. By doing so, they give me a strong sense of doubt as I tend to overlook certain areas yet, the peer reviewer that I came across didn’t really help.

After the first two in-class peer review sessions I began to feel more comfortable analyzing a paper and finding areas to strengthen. I was then able to start applying this ability and technique into my own writing and look deeper in to the contextual edits of the paper. It is common to miss your own mistakes or critical information. When I read somebodies stuff, I can pick out different flaws than I can pick out on my own. There were times when I would forget to add something to an essay or a story that were critical and because I knew it, I forgot to make it known to the reader. Many people do the same thing while being unaware they are doing it. It is also helpful because your peers can ask you questions about your piece that can help you improve your knowledge, insight, and writing. While peer evaluations are a great revision strategy, it should not be your only revision

Likewise, the peer revision process was the calling out process I had grown accustomed to while playing lacrosse. I would read through all of the peer reviewers papers ensuring that the paper flowed well from paragraph to paragraph through relative context and use of transitions. I also focused on the unity of each paragraph and the paper as a whole. I always included ideas that the author could expand on throughout his drafts so that it would be easier for him to reach his required word count.

How many times have you rewritten a sentence in your essay because it was ineffective? Then, after you corrected that sentence you realized that you made a grammar or spelling mistake. Peer-review aids to avoid this problem. Getting feedback from classmates can also help eliminate any errors in the paper, and overall, it helps create a more creative essay.

Throughout my journey in the course, I have learned to appreciate the vital process of peer review, I now recognize the importance of drafting and revising, and can now successfully navigate the library. Utilizing the peer review was helpful at times for finding small grammatical mistakes to improve on my rough draft for all the papers needed for this class. It also assisted me with my own abilities to help peer review someone else’s work. Seeing what others did incorrectly help fix my papers so that I wouldn’t make the same mistakes. Peer editing made me more open to suggestions and let me receive feedback on what I had written. Normally, I would write my rough draft last minute and turn it in to my teacher as a final draft, thinking it was golden, because of that it resulted in a low score. When I saw all the suggestions and correction on my draft, it made me feel ashamed of how poorly I did, knowing I could’ve done way better. It opened my eyes and insight to how others read and interpreted my writings.

I am sending a peer evaluation form, and I would like to ask you to keep the information for yourself. Some people will not understand certain things if you try to talk to them about our work, and I really don't want to have problems with anybody, as I will have to work with them for the next two semesters. I wouldn't probably even fill out the form if it's not required because I'm emotionally drained and tired of some people from my group's behaviors. However, I do understand that some of them have experienced serious problems, and that might have caused their difficulties with either organization or timely work.
