What is history? Who gets to writes it? Can you be a part of it? History is an array of fragmented stories clustered together to form a whole and power is the driving force of storytelling, that is, those with a voice can be part of history. Michael Ondaatje’s 1987 novel, In the Skin of a Lion, challenges the notion that our great human narrative is just singular written story and suggests, through a post-colonial context, that it is actually the micro-narratives that create our collective history.
In the Skin of a Lion explores the importance of achieving a voice and how it promotes individuals to challenge the dominant metanarrative allowing it to be re-written. “Never again will a single story be told as though it were the only one”, Ondaatje

The fragmented structure of the novel emphasises the interconnectedness between each individual setting and each individual character revealing the true multidimensional structure of history. The marginalisation of immigrant workers – who are forbidden to speak their native tongue – and their lack of power is highlighted metaphorically in, “perhaps they are not mute at all”, emphasising the initial dominance of the metanarrative. The notion of the helplessness of those without a voice, is metaphorically depicted by Alice Gull’s puppet show, “it stamped a foot to try and bring out a language”, allegorically demonstrating the impact of the power of language on the notion of storytelling. Patrick Lewis develops his voice by recognising his role as a storyteller, depicted in the authorial intrusion, “his own life was no longer a single story but part of a mural”, signifying the relevance and necessity of micro-narratives upon identity and the consequential reshaping of the hegemonic metanarrative. Nicholas Temelcoff, a daredevil bridge-worker, is painfully aware of his anonymity to history until Patrick shows him a photograph and he symbolically becomes “aware of himself standing there within the pleasure of recall… Patrick’s gift…shows him…how he has been sewn into history”, his
The author, Logan Feys in his article, ¨The Sociology of Leopard Man¨, discusses the topic of society and being a nonconformist. He claims that people should be psychologically free and strong enough to live independently, leaving society and entering society on their own terms. He supports his claim by first comparing abnormal people and ¨normal¨ people. For example, in the article he states, “Plenty of weird people do have serious mental problems. But so do plenty of ¨normal¨ people.¨ (Feys 1). He then goes on to explain the dangers of conforming to society. ¨Conformity can be seen as the world's most common but dangerous psychological disorder. Living in society, we are under constant pressure to surrender our individuality to the will of
Throughout Canadian history, Issues of ethnicity and race have been a prevalent problem as a multicultural society. The novel In The Skin of a Lion by Michael Ondaatje, Ondaatje shines a light upon to the forgotten immigrant workers by creating intersection between history and fiction effectively shows us the overall poor treatment the forgotten immigrant workers who built Toronto’s waterworks and viaducts because of racism, marginalization and difference while also highlighting them in a positive light.
The Interesting Narrative conveys the first-hand experiences of an African who is stripped of the basic rights given to humans and is forced into slavery, while at the same this individual fights for freedom. This autobiography is a reliable source for historians, educators, and students. After analyzing the literature, I concluded that the autobiography’s main criteria included content, tone, perspective, and the structure of his writing. The authors ability to manipulate this criterion, allows for the successful creation of an environment that builds a connection between the audience and his journey.
In the novel, “In the Skin of a Lion,” by Michael Ondaatje, the main character, Patrick Lewis, searches for identity and light. Without these elements, he lacks love and cannot survive the world. A passage in chapter three describes him as a lonely man that is isolated from the world around him. “Clara and Ambrose and Alice and Temelcoff and Cato- this cluster made up a drama without him. And he himself was noting but a prism that refracted their lives. He searched out things, he collected things. He was an abashed man, an inheritance from his father. Born in Abashed, Ontario. What did the word mean? Something that suggested there was a terrible horizon in him beyond which he couldn’t leap.

C. Wright Mills concerns himself with biographical dimensions and the issues which accompany this multi-layered dimension. Biography is associated primarily with the individual on an intellectual level. This is otherwise known as micro-sociology which “concentrates more on the conscious and self-determining individual” (Punch et al,21) than macro-sociology does. Mills believes that you cannot have society and history without the impact of the individual. Despite biography outlining the individual, we see a domino effect as the individual is key when it comes to world history. Society, as one complex spatial unit, is composed of billions of individuals who create and change history effortlessly. Thus, C.Wright Mills believes that these three concepts are intermittingly interlinked and are pivotal in defining both today’s society and history.
The use of elements of narrative and figurative language help establish a sense that Christopher is ‘the other’ in this novel. The choice of a fifteen year old boy with an unidentified disability as the narrator affects the experience of the story. His choice of words, his individual points of interest and competence to describe situations and prioritise information indicates that Christopher does not fit in with the general society’s standards. The narration in the novel is often substantially idiomatic. This highlights the key communication barrier between Christopher and others. There is an expectation for the character to have more of a sophisticated language but the narration has a simple use of sentence structure. For example, it is presented
The irony of such circumstance is that the migrants are there because they were trying to escape from the turmoil of their previous homes. They came for a new start, but found themselves only to be trapped again in a political game of social divisions. The man committed the illegal act for a moment of victory and freedom. An act of resistance is a moment of freedom.

The short story “Pride of Seven”, Robert W. Krepps lets readers examine how difficult it can be to fit with society by being individual, and how people can met with peace and still be accepted. A man is narrating a story about how an african american, En-gerr, who is a man that has to show his people he isn't a child anymore by defeating a lion. The lion he chooses is a specifically special lion to the narrator who he names Elsfar, and watches the lions from a hill as they bicker and play. When the narrator brings En-gerr to the hill to watch the lions, En-gerr decides to choose Elsfar to fight to the death in order to earn his manhood. As he goes to fight the lion, Elsfar attacks the less bulky lion who was named black mane. Elsfar then defeats him as the natives are yelling in amazement and En-gerr ,instead of defeating the lion, makes peace with it and is accepted by his native friends by the decision he made.
Lion in Winter is the chess game as portrayed in Becket. There are kings and queens, but the most important ones are the pawns. The pawns are what makes this story grow. Everyone in this story is playing their own chess game for their own reasons. The most dangerous ones are the one that have nothing to lose.
However instead of employing historical contexts to create the tension, Ondaatje makes subtle but explicit comments on historical oblivion to individuals and their stories. History is implicitly considered as a master narrative that allows no space to articulate local narratives and to account for the richness, variety and complexity of human experience. To counterbalance the

In Sundiata: An Epic of Mali and The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, the importance of storytelling and recording history is prevalent throughout both stories. In Sundiata, the griot serves as the narrator of the story recounting the tale of Sundiata told to him by his father who learned it from his father and so on for countless generations. Griots travel amongst their people using oral history as a way of preserving African culture and heritage throughout generations. They treasure the superiority of oral history above written history because the written word “lacks the warmth of the human voice.” Conversely, Olaudah Equiano explores the written word as a method of spreading his story throughout the world. He writes a biography because it can be translated into countless different languages because his purpose is to educate as many people about his story in an effort to end the atrocities of the slave trade. While the function of the griot is to connect Sundiata with his ancestry via oral storytelling and music, Equiano’s written testimony distances himself from his indigenous African heritage.
