Everybody wants to be perfect. People want to have control of their lives, yet life does not work that way. In the short story, “Pancakes,” Joan Bauer wrote about, Jill, the main character, controlling her work at a pancake house. One Sunday when Jill was working, a group of tourists arrived at the pancake house. Jill was the only waitress working so she had to balance her “perfect” work as customers come in. Jill tries to do her “perfect” way, but with customers in and out of the restaurant, the stress she has makes her fail at being perfect. The author’s overall argument in "Pancakes" is that it is impossible to be perfect through the use of foreshadowing, simile, and the first-person-point-of-view.

The play Terra Nova opens with the protagonist Captain Robert Falcon Scott, trying to write a letter to the public. However, Scott was having difficulty to do so, as he’s too weak and weary, he seems to have suffered from frostbites in his hand but he continues to write, speaking his words out loud. At the same time Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer also enters the stage, introducing Scott to the members of the Royal Society, who gathered together in honored of him. Amundsen ' introduction of Scott was the first hint to the audiences that Scott was already dead, and his story is told through the journal and letters that were later found.

Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, and A Dream is a 1990 non-fiction novel wrote by H.G. Bissinger. The story chronicles the pressures and expectations of the Permian Panthers football team in socially divided Odessa, Texas. Throughout the story, challenges are presented with each of the protagonists: James “Boobie” Miles, Mike Winchell, Don Billingsley, Gary Gaines, Brian Chavez, and Ivory Christian.

In the story, “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury a man by the name of Mr. Eckels goes on a safari expedition with a company called Time Safari Inc., sixty-five million years back in time. During this expedition they find a Tyrannosaurus Rex and Eckels becomes nervous and freaks out, after that he seems scared and steps off a path which is strictly forbidden as it can alter the timeline, in doing so he crushes a butterfly and changes what will become the present. Through this story Ray Bradbury is trying to convey the theme of all of your actions, even small ones, can grow and form into much greater consequences and outcomes. We shouldn’t be blind to the consequences of our actions.

In the book, “Where am I wearing” written by Kelsey Timmerman goes on a adventure to find out where and who made the clothes that he wears everyday. Kelsey Timmerman believes that the people impacted by globalization encounter more problems and struggles than someone in a non globalized country. Did you know that the average amount someone is china makes per hour is one dollar and thirty six cents compared to the U.S where on average they make twenty three dollars and thirty two cents per hour. Even though the men and women in china are working roughly 3.6 hours more than people in the U.S.

The Troubled Man Louie Zamperini a name that should go down in history. Louie could run a mile in 4:07.9 (indoors). He survived 47 days lost at sea, on a raft with 2 other people. He also survived 4 POW camps. In the book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand Louie Zamperini appears to be very determined and resourceful.

The Time Machine written by H.G. Wells is metaphorically describing humanity as being peaceful on the surface, but under hidden depths there is a desire to be destructive. In the early chapters of the book, the time traveller expects the descendants of mankind to be super-intelligent, but is disappointed by the behaviour of the supposedly advanced species, the Eloi. His curiosity about the mysterious wells leads to his discovery of the Morlocks and their hidden technology, and what he believes is the confirmation of a dystopic future. Towards the conclusion of his journey the book shows how he had come to love the Eloi because of their childlike nature, but hated the Morlocks because of their destructive and carnivorous

The Holocaust was the systematic and bureaucratic murder of six million Jews by the Nazi party and its collaborators. During the era of the Holocaust, German authorities targeted many groups of people because of their perceived "racial inferiority" including Gypsies, the disabled, and some of the Slavic peoples. Other groups were persecuted on political, ideological, and behavioral grounds. Several authors have written about the Holocaust, but one author that touched many people the most was Elie Wiesel. The world is advancing so rapidly today, it seems that it will never stop growing in knowledge and complexity. In the novel “The Time Machine” by H.G. Wells, The Time Traveler, as Wells calls him, travels hundreds of thousands of years into the future through time. He arrives at a world that, at first glimpse, is peaceful and clear of any worries. As The Time Traveler explores the world, he discovers that the human race has evolved into 2 distinct forms. Although the world appeared to be the Garden of Eden, it was, in reality, the Garden of Evil. Wells uses three aspects of the futuristic world to illustrate this: the setting, the Eloi, and the Murlocks.

Steinbeck foreshadows the death of Lennie many ways throughout the novel. Lennie has a tendency to mess up. For example, George said in the beginning of the novel if he ever got in trouble to go by the brush and wait for him to arrive. When Lennie killed the pup and Curley's wife he went to the brush and waited for George. Lennie also had trouble with pets or feeling soft things. For example, he killed the mice he always held or played with. This foreshadows that Lennie has the strength and ability to kill someone or something without trying or wanting to. When Candy's dog was was old and suffering, Carlson grabbed his Luger and shot the dog in the back of the head. This foreshadows that someone is going to die. For example, George grabbed

Both texts shared numerous figurative languages. The one that really caught my attention was the foreshadowing that was utilized. “The Story of an Hour” contained two foreshadowing that caught my attention. (“There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair.”) (P 653) (“The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves”) (P 653). The open window that was described in the text seemed to be the path to her freedom, while the closed door behind her was the captive past that Mrs. Mallard experience. The open window was on a story higher than the ground floor. It seemed to me the foreshadowing of her death could be seen here. If she embraced her freedom and take the path through the open window, she would be faced with major consequences, which would lead to death. In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, the foreshadowing was used to convey something weird was going to happen, which in this case was the discovering of the women in the wallpaper. (“I would say a haunted house.”) (P 655) (“And why have stood so long untenanted?”) (P 655). Irony was also utilized in both texts. (“of joy that kills”) (P 654). Joy does not usually result in death. The irony part is that they thought the joy was for finding out that her husband is alive which they were mistaken as mentioned above. The Time Machine As I understand it, Darwin in his book ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES published in 1865, argues that natural selection leads to adaptive improvement. Or even, if evolution isn't under the influence of natural selection, this could still lead to divergence and diversity. At one time, there was a single ultimate ancestor, and from this, hundreds of millions of separate individual species evolved. This process where one species splits into two different species is called speciation. Subsequent divergence leads to a wider separation of taxonomic units, the genera, the families, the orders, the classes, etc.

James Kouzes and Barry Posner wrote a leadership book entitled “Credibility: How leaders gain and lose it, why people demand it” (“Credibility”).
