This semester I approximately read 7 books. The kind of books I usually like to read are mystery’s and adventures. During the reading, I decided to switch out my book because I either didn’t understand the book or didn’t like it in general. Independent reading is something I’d choose over reading aloud in a group. It helps me understand the book better and I can read at my own pace.
17-year-old, Hazel Grace Lancaster, has Thyroid Cancer who goes to a cancer patient support group where she meets a boy named Augustus Waters. He is at the cancer patient support group to help support his friend who lost his eye due to cancer and is going to lose the other eye. Augustus is now cancer free after he got his leg amputated. Augustus and Hazel hang out after the support group and talk about what type of cancer they have/had.
There were a couple of things that surprised me in this book is how Augustus was cancer free but then the cancer returned and made everything unpleasant. I was astonished to

“I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will coma day when all out labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.” The meaning of this quote is that Hazel and Augustus are in love and that one day they are going to die so let’s live in the moment. “My name is Hazel. Augustus Waters was the great star-crossed love of my life.” They are both star-crossed lovers that don’t want to live without each other. “I just kind of crawled across the couch into her lap and my dad came over and held my legs really tight and I wrapped my arms all the way around my mom’s middle and they held on to me for hours while the tide rolled in.” Hazel was in so much pain that when her parents came over to help her, they really comforted
Augustus and Hazel built a strong bond. Unfortunately, cancer took one of their lives. Augustus's cancer came back, and he later died because of it. The return of his cancer was unexpected, and impromptu. Augustus tried to stay strong for Hazel, but he weakened by the day. I would unquestionably refer this book for any mature teen. This book is suspenseful and intriguing, it's hard to put it down! This book gave me a new insight of how even though you may have perfect health, anything can happen. This is a type of book that never gets boring or dull. I relished this book greatly, and I would certainly recommend
For this project, I decided to read “The Fault in Our Stars,” a novel written by John Green. This book is about 16 year old Hazel Grace, who is diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She attends weekly Cancer Support Group, where she meets Augustus Waters, a “very intelligent and hot” boy who is currently in remission. They both take a liking for each other, their relationship growing and developing throughout the book as they fight cancer together. Along the way, Hazel learns many important lessons about life.
Quote: “If he'd thought about it too much, he didn't know why he saved his father either. It's not as if Richard Lopez has made his life any easier.”
Chapter 2 – Augustus reveals he lost his leg to cancer. Passed his driver’s test as another ‘cancer perk’. Hazel missed school since 13. She describes her experience with chemotherapy and surgery. Hazel developed pneumonia at 14. Has stayed alive with miracle drug, Phalanxifor, stopping growth of tumours. Presently attends the community school.
Augustus gives Hazel a reason to enjoy life. A new friend she can relate to, have long philosophical conversations with and share interests in books. Even though Hazel and Augustus experience some cliche aspects of teenage relationships, their relationship is complicated by their medical statuses. Augustus diagnosed with osteosarcoma, but in remission, and Hazel who is diagnosed with Stage 4 Thyroid cancer with metastasis forming in her lungs. Even though both characters are faced with the conflict of cancer, it is the common bond that brought them together.
He withers rapidly, and Hazel witnesses all the embarrassment and torment he endures subsequently. He loses control of his body, urinates in his bed, and gets to be bound to a wheelchair. When he calls her for help subsequent to heading to the corner store, she thinks about the guy he's come to be, also knowing the "Augustus Waters of the crooked smiles and unsmoked cigarettes was gone, replaced by this desperate, humiliated creature sitting there beneath me. "(p.45) Afterward in The Fault in Our Stars, she thinks about the traditions of the cancer kid, how should they keep up their spirit and humor all the way to the finish.
When implementing the intervention the first day students were able to get through reading the passage multiple times. The 4th day of the intervention students were less motivated doing the repeated reading. They began to take longer coloring their bar graph to take a break from reading the passage. John did have difficulty staying focus on completing two of the repeated reading without stopping. In several occasions he did request a break and it was granted so he did not feel overwhelmed from all the reading. Also, he sometimes did need to work with myself to help with the words he had difficulty with and for him to remain focus. The moments John did become discourage from the reading he would skip chunks of lines from the reading and only read the words he knew. When John skipped lines, he was encouraged to go back and follow the reading with his pencil. He did listen to what he was instructed to do, but he would continue to skip portions of the reading. For John the best support to give him was to sit with him to help him how to monitor himself from
After reading the article on Dialogic Reading from the Reading Rockets Website I learned a lot about why this type of reading strategy is important and should be used in preschools worldwide because of its benefits. What I personally think of this technique is that it is very beneficial for any new student learning to read especially at a preschool level where the student themselves are reading a book instead of being read to by their teacher. What it says right from the article on Dialogic Reading that I highly agree with that explains why this is so beneficial is, “Likewise, no one can learn to read just by listening to someone else read. Children learn most from books when they are actively involved”( readingrockets.org). This right here
In The Fault in our Stars by John Green, Hazel, who has cancer, learns that love is difficult. To begin with, Hazel Grace Lancaster discovered that she had thyroid cancer when she was young. Now, she is sixteen and also has cancer in her lungs. On the other hand, Hazel’s mom thinks she is depressed, so she starts sending her to a weekly support group. There are plenty of adherents that support Hazel at the support group. When Hazel was little, she almost died because of lung failure. She has been having problems with breathing ever since and now has to carry around an oxygen tank everywhere she goes. Nevertheless, her mom thinks it is best for her to go to this support group for her condition.
On June 5, 2015, from 2:00-4:00pm, I participated in a guided reading walkthrough at Woodley Hills Elementary School. Prior to this, I had already met with 2 of the reading specialist to get insight on what kind of walkthrough I would be seeing. During that initial meeting, they informed me that WHES was currently a target school for improvement in the area of reading. The school had to create a strategic plan for improving reading levels for all students. Their strategy was to provide professional development in the guided reading program as well as conduct walkthroughs to see if teachers were implementing what they learned and create additional professional development on weak areas.
-The novel is opened up by the main character, Hazel Grace Lancaster, who makes a comment about how her mother thinks she is depressed
Independent daily reading- The phrase independent daily reading referred to the time during the literacy block that students read by themselves from an individual basket of books.
Every day or every night I should read a book for my N.I.R (Nightly Independent Reading). I should keep track on the time and how many pages I’ve read. On Wednesday, I should write about how much I read and what my story is about using my log prompt that my lesbian teacher gave me. Then I should read it over a couple of times to see if it’s accurate. On Thursday, I should type my report on my N.I.R. on the computer and print it out. Then on Friday when I head to Per.B, I hand in my report to my lesbian teacher done
