Independent Reading Reflections #1- Quote: “He had no idea what he was. Half of something, a quarter of something else, brown skin and black hair like his dead mother, but with weird blue eyes like his father.” Response: This is important to the development of the story because it gives us descriptions as to what he looks like, so we can better visualize the character as the plot progresses. It also describes a little bit of what his father looks like and what his dead mother used to look like. Questions: How did his mother die? How could his race effect the story? #2- Quote: “Wherever the huge ships lay, scavenge gangs like nailer’s swarmed like flies.” Response: This is important because it gives us (the reader) much needed background information to better visualize and understand the story. Most likely, his job will play a key role in both the story as it developes, and Nailer’s (the main character) development as a person. Questions: Why are there ships everywhere? When does this take place? (Future?) #3- Quote: “If he'd thought about it too much, he didn't know why he saved his father either. It's not as if Richard Lopez has made his life any easier.” Response: I wonder if his father really does love him, but uses the booze to hide behind his conflicted emotions about losing his wife. This is a similar relationship in the Outsiders between Ponyboy, and his brother Darry. Ponyboy can't tell if Darry loves him or not, because he is always hiding his emotions from Ponyboy, for he is so hurt from his mother's and father's death. Maybe Nailer had a similar thought and that's why he chose to save his dad. Questions: How will his dad change throughout the story if any? How will Nailer change throughout the story? #4- Quote: “They were all looking at the water now. Hungry. “You think they even know were here?” Moon girl asked. Pima spat in the sand. “Were just flies on garbage to people like that.” Response: This quote reminds me a lot of the book “The Outsiders” due to the large social gap between poor people and rich people. In this quote, a Clipper Ship (expensive ship for rich people) is sailing across the water, as the three main characters watch. One of the characters
Characterisation is important in any short story as it helps to make the story that little bit more appealing, because it’s a short story, it is important to get the characterisation right as we don’t have hundreds of pages to learn about the character, in fact we only really have a page or two, maybe even less depending on the story, we might only have paragraphs to learn about the character. When looking at characterisation in the short story, you have too keep in mind, which character catches your eye? Is it the main character? Is it a supporting character? Why do they appeal to you? How does the author of the short story portray and reveal the character? The idea of characterisation is literally an act of describing certain characteristics,
The character helps understand the theme in the story, that individuality must be treasured in our society, because it shows what the emotional and physical links to the society in the book, as well as the mental states and feelings influencing the text.
This is a very important part of the book because it shows the reader that the
In the book the Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, the Socs think they're on top because they have money and the Greasers are on the bottom because they have nothing. Reality is everyone is the same; we were all made to be equal. Wealth does not matter;if you have wealth or not you are still equal. Wealth is so important because it determines how you will be treated. That is how it is in the Outsiders, the Socs have money so they think they have the world but that doesn't matter, everyone should be treated equally. This book can help everyone realize that if you do not have wealth it's fine and if you do it doesn't
“Through Deaf Eyes” was a documentary that really opened my eyes and allowed me to understand just a small fraction of what it may be like for a Deaf person to live in a hearing world. The first thing that really stuck with me was the fact that the film was all silent. The part that made it easy for me to understand was the fact that there was closed captioning. All throughout the film, all participants, both Deaf and hearing, were signing at what seemed like lightning speed. If it were not for the closed captioning, there was no way I would be able to catch up and really engage in the film. Then it hit me: this must be how Deaf people feel if the situation was reversed. I always used to get irritated
There is a huge difference between poor people and rich people but in this novel apart from their differences there are some similarities between rich and poor people.
It exemplifies the behavior of the boy and his father throughout the rest of the novel and shows how much they are willing to do to stay alive. It shows the fire within them.
“So after a while, I had me my own friend, and he didn’t care that I wore second-handed clothes or was Jewish. He never judged me. That’s the first thing I liked about him, in fact that’s what I Liked about black folks all my life. They never judged me.”
Vivid images can be found abundantly throughout the novel and helps to portray scenes to the point where the audience can actually imagine, smell, touch, and hear everything that is going on. “No matter how they scrubbed their hands, the residue of Red Hot Mama had a way of sticking round, as pesty and persistent as a chaperone at a high school dance.” (158). In some instances the audience can acquire a sense, based on the description whether the characters are self absorbed, considerate, or overly concerned about their appearance. “I ought to be shot for looking like this” she’d tell the mirror in the front hall before going out the door. “I look like I’ve been drug through hell backwards,” she would say on and ordinary day. “Like death warmed over. Like something the cat puked up.” (103). The emergence of the images presented in the novel can help present a better understanding and in some cases, a connection to one of the

This informs the reader of not only his physical appearance, but also his intellect. His features are sharp, and his body is quick. His mind also shares these traits. His personality is symbolized in his appearance. His relationship with Lennie also says a great deal about George.
In The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there is a clear divide between the rich and the poor. They hardly even see each other. There are even divides between the rich themselves with the West Egg and the East Egg. But is it really like this now?
“My only sin is in my skin, What did I do to be so black and blue?”
The primary question to ask is what role does the physical appearance, the “body”, play in the formation of self? The physicality of the protagonist is the most obvious aspect of the self. The character is physically missing a piece a piece
