The advancement of the private prison system has changed the face of the prison industry as we know it. Because little attention has been given in the media to the private prison industry, they have been able to expand their influence and their revenue by means the average American would consider unscrupulous. This paper will delve into and examine this problem and how it is closely linked to private prisons and the issues surrounding them. The prison industrial complex refers to the coinciding relationship between corporations, government, correctional communities, and their collective economic interest in prison expansion and high rates of incarceration (Davis, 2003a). That is, each of these components benefit economically from perpetuating the notion that increasing crime rates are the causation for prison expansion. Just like everything else in America there has to be a debate about it. There are those that are for the privatization of prisons and those that are against it. James A. Questions that continue to be debated publicly, governmentally as well as scholarly is what role, if any, private prisons should play in the future incarceration needs in the United states, should there be limitations developed with regard to private prison usage, and ultimately, who should run them, government or private business owners.
