Fighting against Animal Cruelty For my speech, I decided to talk about animal cruelty. Animal cruelty or animal abuse is when animals are mistreated, beaten, and neglected by humans. Animal cruelty is a topic we all know happens in life, but we chose to ignore it. I’m an animal lover and I personally want to become a veterinarian and help animals be healthy, safe, and most importantly happy. Growing up I’ve had many pets and I’ve been around plenty of animals and just the thought of these animals, that are so caring, loving, and loyal are suffering, not just physically but emotionally as well, disgusts me. We aren’t fully aware of how common animal abuse is because most cases aren’t reported. People will report other crimes that involve humans but they neglect and tend look away when they spot animal abuse. According to Statistic Brain, the average number of cases of animal abuse reported in the media each year is 1,920 (keep in mind this is just media). From those cases, 60% involved dogs, 18% involved cats, and 22% involved other animals. The most common types of abuse are neglection/abandonment (32%), hoarding (13%), shooting (11%), poisoning (10%), fighting (9%), and beating (8%). There’s also stabbing, mutilation/torture, choking/suffocation, and burning (these are between two to five percent). But from hoarding, there are 250,000 animals that fall victim. Now, these cases don’t include the number of animals that are used for testing and are killed each year in U.S. laboratories. Each year there are 100,000,000 animals that are killed in laboratories when are being used for testing products. These animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused. I saw a video of baby monkeys being taken away from their mothers and the scientist put the monkeys in tiny cages. They cause the babies to obtain anxiety and depression to examine the way their brain reacts afterwards. As reported by a PETA investigation, these testings aren’t necessary because they’re irrelevant to humans and because of the fact that there’s far more effective and modern methods available for the study of mental health. In addition to laboratory testing, there are many companies that test on animals, like for example, MAC,
A Beagle becomes a chain smoker in a medical lab. He smokes through a machine linked to his wind pipe by a tube. This experiment is designed to study the connection between smoking and lung disease.
Do animals have the right to a certain quality of life? How would your views change if our cooks got treated the same way cattle and poultry do? How would you feel about them being beaten and brought to their knees just to be detained to know how to cook todays specials? You might think that the food industry has no issues and no faults behind their tasty food, but when you open up the meat curtain, there is a different kind of world out there that is cruel and inhumane. In Robert Kenner’s 2008 film, Food, Inc., He shows the conditions that cows, chickens, and pigs have to live in. The dark and closeted homes in which the animals are closely compacted together and eating, sleeping, and walking in their own manure. As a person who would consider themselves an animal rights activist, most people would agree that the food industry treats their animals like products instead of living things.
Animal Cruelty is a problem that many ignore. People are oblivious to these animals and the negligence their owners show. Animal cruelty is an underlying problem in today’s society, and the only way to counteract these problems, is for this generation to do something about it.
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that eating meat and other animal derived products like cheese, milk, and yogurt is harmful to us and our planet.
1. ATTENTION GETTER: Millions of animals are abused each year. Over a million of these animals are abused or killed just due to the involvement with domestic violence. Despite animal cruelty being a felony which can result in jail time for over 15 years and 500,000 dollars in fines, it is still an issue which occurs on a daily basis across the United States. It is important for these animals to not go unnoticed, which can be achieved if society became more enlightened and educated on the topic of animal cruelty. (Pacelle, 2011).
Hello everyone. My name is Saniyah Foster and I am currently enrolled in introduction to speech at Columbia College. Growing up my family has always taught me to be kind to animals and we were surrounded by many of them throughout my childhood. Being a lover of animals I’ve always supported the efforts of organizations fighting for the lives of animals.
For many years, the field of science has used animals in medical experiments worldwide, because of this innocent animals are being killed everyday. They are being tested with new drugs, new treatments, and by many makeup companies. Connecticut recently celebrated the passage of the “Beagle Freedom Law”, a law that requires laboratories to work with charities and rescue groups to find homes for research cats and dogs. Animals are being tested so humans do not have to be but animal tests do not reliably predict results in human beings, although animals are the closest thing to humans. Most experiments involving animals are flawed, wasting the lives of innocent animal subjects. Over 100 million animals suffer a year from testing. Testing animals is a lot more expensive than alternative methods and it is wasting government research dollars. Animal testing is not only a bad idea, but it is also inhuman and it should not be tolerated. The FDA should stop allowing animal testing. An animal does not give out the same results on a test than a human would.
Every 60 seconds an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.
The Humane Society estimates that approximately one million animals per year are either abused or killed in relation to a domestic violence situation. From the U.S. Department of Justice (as of 200), there are approximately 2.168 million women and men that are physically assaulted by an intimate partner in the US. The APPMA (American Pet Product Manufacturers Association) estimates that 63% of U.S. households own a pet (Humane Society).
Seventy million of lives are claimed by animal testing facilities and millions more survive through the horrific tests, suffering the psychological and physical consequences. “The use of animals in experiments at leading federally-funded labs has increased nearly 73 percent in the past 15 years, according to a new study conducted by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
“Each year, more than 100 million animals—including mice, rats, frogs, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, fish, and birds—are killed in U.S. laboratories for biology lessons, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing.” ("Experiments on Animals: Overview.") Some believe that animal testing is futile, while others say it is beneficial to science. Testing cosmetic, medical, and chemical products on animals is unreliable, unnecessary, and inhumane.
“Animals that develop toxic injury of disease during testing experience significant pain”(stokes). This is why so many animals are dying because they just have such a hard time dealing with the pain and suffering. “ Estimated 2,000 new chemicals and thousands of other chemical products undergo safety tests with animals to determine whether the substance is toxic, lethal, or causes allergic reactions”(Stokes). There are just so many strong and harsh chemicals going into this little animal's body and it is so unsafe for them. “A 1950’s sleeping pill caused 10,000 babies to be born with severe deformities and was tested on animals” (Newswire, “pros and cons”) This just goes to show that animal testing takes a while to reach the goal and is not always accurate. “ Seventy million animals are used in this manner in the U.S. every year” (Collin 1273). Animals are being hurt everyday and it is out of their control and it's even unfair because they do not have a
Every year in the United States more than one hundred million animals are poisoned, crippled, and abused in labs. Imagine being locked up in a cage your whole life and used against your will to be harmed in a number of ways (“11 Facts”). It does not sound fun does it? Just like us, animals are living. They feel pain and they suffer just like we do. I personally believe testing on animals is wrong because it is ruthless and barbarous, other methods exist today that could replace the need for animals, and these tests do not accurately foresee the results in humans.
What would you do if you saw someone hurting an animal? Most of you probably would not know what you should REALLY do. Good morning (afternoon) teachers, and fellow students. Today, I will be talking to you about animal abuse and cruelty. Specifically, I will discuss cats and dogs being abused, because they are the most abused domestic animals. Domestic means that these are types of animals you can have in your home.
Animal cruelty is a topic that i feel like no one wants to talk about just because of how sweet people think they are and they can only imagine someone being nice to them and no way that anyone would like to hurt ad sweet little animal right well that's where most people are very wrong the harsh reality is that there is a ton of animals that are mistreated by their owners and that's not counting mistreated by the making of films and other activities that animals are involved in its harsh but very true.
