Informative Speech On A Serial Killer

Serial killers, we have all heard of them and most of us are petrified of them. They commit horrendous crimes that many people cannot even begin to wrap their head around. Unfortunately, for those of us who are afraid of them it is likely we have encountered at least one if not multiple in our lifetime. That last sentence really puts the “be nice to everyone” quote into perspective, doesn’t it? It is not known how many serial killers are actually walking around among us however most studies conducted reviled we may not want the answer. Chances are the number is higher than we would have thought and definitely higher than we had hoped. Although I highly doubt we will ever get an actual number. It is not likely that a survey will be given to see how many serial killers are actually walking free. Even if this hypothetical survey was given I do not think an actual serial killer is going to put a checkmark in the are you a serial killer box. Although if they did mark the box they would save a lot of lives. Answering yes to such a question would land them in a psych ward. We may not know how to identify a serial killer simply by looking them up and down but we do have theories that help predict why they choose to commit unspeakable crimes. Statistically, the average serial killer is a white male from a lower-to-middle-class background, usually in his twenties or thirties. Many were physically or emotionally abused by parents. Some were adopted. As children, fledgling serial killers often set fires, torture animals, and wet their beds (these red-flag behaviors are known as the “triad” of symptoms.) Brain injuries are common. Some are very intelligent and have shown great promise as successful professionals. They are also fascinated with the police and authority in general (Scott).

Serial murders are considered to be one of the most heinous and formidable crimes that can be committed, even though serial murders account for less than one percent of all crimes committed in a given year. Serial murders further appalls society in that these killers do not possess any of the basic human emotions such as, empathy, conscious, or remorse. Throughout the decades, the fascination of serial killers have consumed mainstream society, with numerous television shows being produced including, Dexter, Hannibal, and the Following. However, an exaggerated depiction of these killers within the mass media still continues to blur fact and fiction together. As a result, real-life serial killers such as the infamous Gary Ridgway, also known as “The Green River Killer” and fictional ones like Norman Bates have become tremendously interchangeable in the mind of many individuals.

I don’t really know what to say to you. To be quite honest, I hate you. Everything you do is cruel. Do you find pleasure in destroying lives? You go after people the day they are born and constantly stay in the back of their mind. You rip people away from their families and everything they have ever known. It’s just not fair. But, I guess it is natural and without you there would be no room for new people on this earth.

A serial killer is traditional defined as the separate killings of three or more people by an individual over a certain period of time, usually with breaks between the murders. (Angela Pilson, p. 2, 2011) This definition has been accepted by both the police and academics and therefore provides a useful frame of reference (Kevin Haggerty, p.1, 2009). Imagine this, what if a serial killer has been going around your neighborhood and started to kill your neighbors with no motivation for doing so, would you feel safe and protected? Well, these civilians in a certain neighborhood felt unprotected and afraid when they heard the news that someone had been shot and killed in their neighborhood. There were four victims total that had been shot to death by a serial killer in Tampa, Florida in a small neighborhood called Seminole Heights. I am informing you of this important new because knowing that a serial killer is on the loose is a good knowledge to know when you are alone outside and you probably will be cautious of your surroundings. Also, the homicide rate alone in the United States has increased 4% more this year compared to last year. The first killing happened on October 9 where the victim, Benjamin Mitchell, 22 got shot and killed at his front of his house. Then two days later, on October 11, Monica Hoffa, 32 was shot to death and her body was found on October 13 when a city worker found her at a parking lot just half a mile away from the first killing. Eight days later, October 19, Anthony Naiboa, 20 just graduated high school, accidentally got on the wrong bus and took a detour to death in Seminole Height and then was shot and killed.

America has some of the most infamous serial killers who marked history, serial killers who once didn’t even think to harm any human being. Many people grow up differently from others, some people grow up in a safe environment surrounded with caring people and others grow up in a completely different environment being missed treated by others, therefore are serial killers made or born?

Psychopaths lack empathy and guilt, are egocentric and impulsive and don’t conform to social, moral, or legal norms. Psychopaths have a distinct set of rules for themselves. The serial killers of the United States have become many things after their stories; they have become hated by families, research for psychologists, and celebrities to their followers. Serial killers are one of the most terrifying thoughts in the back of the mind. The mere thought of being tortured and then killed just for someone’s amusement is one of the most terrifying thoughts anyone could imagine. I have chosen to do my informative speech on the unsolved mystery of the Zodiac Killer. Methods I will be using to captivate my audience from the book will be word pictures, numbers, key words, and to speak claerly. I plan on starting my speech with word pictures by setting the scene of the 1960s-1970s, this was the time period the Zodiac Killer was on his killing spree.
