Informative speech outline: Dreams
Purpose: To inform my audience about dreams.
Thesis: Understanding how dreams occur, how they affect our lives and what they mean to help us grasp what dreams actually are.
Introduction
Grabber: Have you ever fell asleep and dreamed that you were being chased by a person from a scary movie or a monster and no matter how fast you run you cant get away. Right before you’re caught you wake up scared and confused. Being chased in a dream happens to a lot of people. These kinds of dreams are the most common reported dreams. Mostly because the anxiety we feel in the dream is so vivid, that it makes it easier for us to remember them. Often, the reason for these dreams comes not from the fear of actually being chased, but rather what we’re running from.
Relevance: As college students we usually have a lot going on from papers to tests to big speeches. As well as things outside of school, balancing work, family, and friends all while trying to keep up with due dates can sometimes to a hard task. Dreams in which you are being chased help us to understand that we may not be addressing something in our waking lives that requires our attention.
Credibility: Everyone has had many dreams throughout their life. Sometimes it is hard to understand why we have dreams and what they mean.
Topic: Today, I will share a little information about what and how dreams occur,
Why do we dream? What do our dreams mean? Dreams are a sequence of images, ideas, and feelings that involuntarily occur most commonly during the REM stage of sleep. They come in a wide variety of types, from the peculiar to the downright terrifying; the dreamer has no control over what they experience in their dreams. Though neurologists have been studying the human brain for decades, we still don’t fully know why we dream or what their significance is. Some psychologists theorize that dreams are closely linked to our subconscious mind, expressing our deepest fears or desires, allowing us to be what we cannot be. Others believe that dreams serve no function at all and are simply our imaginations running wild. In the words of Sigmund Freud, the founding father of psychoanalysis, “The dream is the liberation of the spirit from the pressure of external nature, a detachment of the soul from the fetters of matter.” (The Interpretation of Dreams)
When looking into the meanings of dreams, a variation of things can be found. Most people believe that dreams are a reflection of people’s inner thoughts and feelings. Most of these feelings are too private to be expressed in the real world and that is why they are expressed in a fantasy type way through dreams.
Specific Purpose: The purpose of this speech is to inform the audience about the deeper significance of dreams, with the goal of allowing them to find meaning in their own dreams.
To many people, dreams are the thoughts that occur while sleeping, having almost mystic qualities. For millennia the significance of dreams has escaped even the brightest of philosophers and intellectuals. Many people have speculated about why people dream and what meanings the dreams have but in recent times two theories have gained credibility in answering those questions. The first theory is Sigmund Freuds and the other is known as the cognitive theory of dreams also known as biological determinism.
I found the reading "The Symbolic Language of Dreams", written by Stephens King, a very interesting story to write about. King stated a quote in his introduction saying that dreams are a useful way that help people find the nature of their problems; or, find answers to their problems in a symbolic way. The purpose of this essay is to show that dreams and imaginations were two main factors in King 's successful life. Hence, dreams and imaginations are critical factors when writing; they sure can resolve many issues and expand our thoughts in order to write better and longer books. Without passion writing good books is impossible.
Dreams give people a reason to work hard and have something to look forward to in life. They are a great motivation tool that helps people look past tough times they have to work through and look forward to the good things to come. Motivation influences the level of interest and effort given to tasks, and it is essential in maintaining an individual’s performance (Reference,

Relate to Audience: This information may help someone you know or maybe even yourself if you’ve ever wonder about lucid dreaming. IV. Speaker Credibility: I have extensively researched this topic through articles, scholarly journals and websites. V. Preview Main Points: Today I will talk about dreaming and its history, lucid dreaming and teaching oneself how to learn it, and how it has had a positive effect on people.
Dreams are what just creations of the mind; they carry us deep within time. They give us delight and an escape from reality. Then hunt is like the spirits of the past, embedding themselves deep within our hearts.
I have always been interested in learning and interpreting dreams every since I was in high school. Out of everything I learned about dreams over the years, the one that really resonated with me the most was that dreaming is our way of dealing with problems from our waking state. For that reason, I chose an article called Relation of Dreams To Waking Concerns by Rosalind Cartwright, Mehmet Y. Agargun, Jennifer Kirkby, and Julie Kabat Friedman. It captured my interest because it goes into depth about how your waking concerns effects your dreaming state. It also goes into detail about Slow Wave Sleep (SWS) and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and what they have to do with dreaming.
As if deferred from the desirable existence of hope and the ambition to strive to the limitless boundary of enthusiasm and eagerness, dreams are a visual compound of ideologies composed by one’s most desired goals and ambitions in our everyday reality. Furthermore, such motives impulse one’s determination off the edge of progress and later sets a sudden flamboyance on a certain field due to such sudden-inherited attributes. For this reason, such anomalies create several vital factors, such as confidence and determination, in an individual’s mind, which drive and convert dreams into a fascinating reality.
The human race has been long since fascinated with the concept that is our dreams. This separate state of consciousness, an alternate reality if you will, has captured the interest of the nation throughout history. Perhaps this is due to the fact that we spend a third of our life in this delusional state; roughly about six years, at the most, of our life dreaming, according to George Bernard Shaw. Properly knowing the fact that a great deal of our life is wasted in a sedated state, thus raises another question: Why do we dream?
Dreams have been around as long as the first civilization came to be and have been a normal part of human existence. One third of your life is spent sleeping, and of that third, on average you will have spent a total of about six years of it dreaming. Most people dream on average two hours every night, but you can have anywhere from four to seven dreams in one night. According to research, the most common setting for a dream is in your own house. In our dreams we can do anything we want and be whoever we want to be. Our dreams are an escape from reality. While we dream we are unable to control our actions and choose our surroundings. We let our minds take over. Sometimes dreams can be understood in the context of repressed thoughts. Dreaming serves as an outlet for those thoughts and impulses we repress during the day. When we go to sleep at night and slip into our dream state, we feel liberated and behave in a manner that we do not allow ourselves to in our everyday life. Visions and ides can come from your dreams. Often, authors, screenwriters, and even poets turn to their dreams for inspiration. The think quest oracle library goes on to tell about the most well-known of the modern dream
In helping you with understanding your dreams. This book provides eight of the most common dreams and how to translate them into their meanings.
Dreams. What are they? Dreaming is the process when humans are sleeping and they create stories based on their pleasures. Researchers have found that there is still more to discover about the process of dreaming because the author says “As with many things concerning the brain and unconscious thought, there is so much that remains unknown about dreaming” (Hannah Nichols). Based on Hannah’s article Dreams: Why do we Dream?, some possible explanations for dreaming are unconscious desires and wishes. Every human wishes something in their life, even when they do not realize it. Being asleep unlocks those desires and humans make a reality where that wish comes true. The next possible explanation for dreaming is to interpret signals from the brain and body. When humans fall asleep our brains are the most active than being awake. Our brains try to process what is
