Subjective classification: Subjective jail classification is a system that relies on the “gut” feeling of the classification staff when making decisions, especially housing decisions. This approach relies on a review of jail records (if inmate had been incarcerated before), current charge, criminal history (prior incarcerations), social history, substance abuse history, mental health history, and the impressions of the classification staff interviewer to make placements. Subjective jail classification has been described as a “clinical, intuitive, seat-of-the-pants approach.” This approach relies on opinions and feelings instead of objective criteria.
Many people believe mass incarceration is a pivotal issue in recent times. However, mass incarceration has been an issue that has plagued the United States and the world for many decades. The idea of mass incarceration deals with the dramatic rise of incarceration rate sin the Unite sates after the 1960s. In the United states, we hold approximately 3 million people in our jails and prisons, and over 7 million people are involve din our criminal justice system. The more troubling idea is the idea of a prison-industrial system. This idea deals with the overlapping interest of the American government with imprisonment and the criminal justice system. The government is viewing the jail system as an economic boom instead of a racist, power driving
The author starts by acknowledging just how many states have adopted the many strategies of reducing the amount of prisoners housed. The author argues that offender classification has been shown to be the key to successful correctional management. The author reviews five overcrowded prisons where classification procedures were abused and contributed to the harmfulness of overcrowding.

I agree Tanya. Race is a major problem, but I don’t believe the system is unfairly targeting a specific race. Evidently, there are those people that are still conditioned to believe in racial stereotypes and may not even realize it. However, I believe the cause of a high incarceration rate is the result of people having a low socioeconomic status. The system as a whole fails as the incarceration rate increases. How are we going to fix that, Welfare? According to my libertarian point of view, welfare should be eliminated. The people who are struggling need to find alternatives such as charity, family, church or any community funded programs. We rely too much on Government. Eliminating welfare will increase community organizing. Welfare has been
As a deputy sheriff working in a courthouse keeping track of inmates is a top priority. With modern technology there should be a system in place to know where inmates are both physically and electronically. Currently inmates are only tracked in the jail by placing a card showing they are out to church, medical, court or for any other reason the inmate is not in their cell. With a growing inmate population this facility will need to update current inmate tracking standards to newer technological driven standards. When inmates are taken to court the current system is to escort these inmates via an underground tunnel to an elevator to take them to the necessary courtroom. The elevator does not have buttons and a deputy needs to call for the

LEVEL 3: Inmates who require more supervision. They are required to be housed in a double fence and have surveillance. This level houses violent offenders with longer sentences. The level of security is medium-high with the males having 16-23 points. It is based on out and in.
The United States prison system is an institution which has undergone dramatic changes in its history, from being a short detention center between a criminal and their true punishment, to what was thought to be a place for wayward souls to be rehabilitated through isolation, hard work, and religious repentance so they could reenter society without committing crimes again, to a place of overcrowded conditions, corruption, and prisoner abuse that existed solely for the sake of punishment. Since the prison system reached that point, there have been numerous attempted reforms of the system, and while they all ultimately failed at their goal of completely overhauling the system, they have all at least partly contributed to what we see in the United
The classifications of the prison systems is to signify the prisoner’s institutional security risk. Also, it helps identify the prisoner’s escape risk along with identifying the most suitable options to place a prisoner that’s high risk among other inmates that’s less violent. Most high risk inmates are accommodated in a facility that’s highly secured with the appropriated amount of supervision from the prison guards. The prisoners that’s less likely to escape or become less violent are the ones who are accommodated with less security supervision. However, some inmates will find that when the prisons are crowded it becomes harder for those to be placed in an institution the help fit their needs. So, for the inmates that are less violent will
Prison inmates, are some of the most "maladjusted" people in society. Most of the inmates have had too little discipline or too much, come from broken homes, and have no self-esteem. They are very insecure and are "at war with themselves as well as with society" (Szumski 20). Most inmates did not learn moral values or learn to follow everyday norms. Also, when most lawbreakers are labeled criminals they enter the phase of secondary deviance. They will admit they are criminals or believe it when they enter the phase of secondary deviance (Doob 171).
Classification is essential to the operation of an orderly and safe prison. It is there in place for whatever program opportunity exists within the institution. It helps the institution manage proper custody levels of an inmate, identify their educational, vocational, and psychological needs, and separate nonviolent inmates from the violent ones. Classifications in the prison system can be used by the correctional administration to help assign staff, treatment options, and bed space. It can separate probationers who
