It's been a busy couple of weeks. Work has been pretty reasonable in terms of busyness but that will change as everyone returns from vacations and when my coworker goes on maternity leave, so I have been scrambling to catch up as much as possible. Also, Laura started school on Tuesday - she's moved up to the Middle School with the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. She's very excited. But it will be an adjustment, going from having a single teacher pretty much all day to moving from classroom to classroom each period. The amount of homework will escalate, too. Not sure how I feel about that -- I think I remember reading that research has demonstrated little value in homework, but maybe you are more aware of the latest thinking. I am also ticked off …show more content…
The story, as you may have heard, involves anthropomorphized representations of basic emotions that run around in an 11-year-old girl's mind as she goes through a transition period in her life. It was bittersweet to watch this with my 11-year-old daughter, who is gradually leaving her childhood tendencies behind. I just finished a lengthy book, Nixonland, about the rise of Richard Nixon in the 1950s and 1960s, through the 1972 presidential election when he was re-elected by a landslide (only Massachusetts had the sense to not vote for him). It goes into amazing detail about not only Nixon's life but also the conflicts going on in the mid- to late-1960s. The players have changed since then (except for a few, like Karl Rove, Pat Buchanan, Roger Ailes, and a few other zealots who are still lurking around) but the issues have changed little. I will usually watch part of Naked and Afraid when it's on (though I usually turn the station if Laura walks in) but I would not go out of my way to watch it, or the handful of other shows I sometimes watch, including Bar Rescue. I spend very little time watching TV. But I agree with your observations on the
Sophie introduces herself in the story as a nerdy, outcasted teenage girl, “I always thought of myself as a free-floating one-celled amoeba, minding my own business. The other kids at school were all parts of a larger organism. . . Not particularly noticed, definitely not appreciated, just an amoeba swimming around aimlessly” (9). Sophie feels as if she does not belong where she grew up, she has always felt like she was on the outside. Her father, a drug dealer and felon, left her mother when she was first born. Because of her extreme self-esteem issues, Sophie blames herself for her father leaving. She recalls what she believes happened when she was born, “When Mom was a teenager, I started making her belly fat. And then my dad left. And then I was born too soon. And he came back to get us.
So, who exactly was the Richard Nixon? In a very broad sense, he was the 37th president of the United States. Before his tenure as the 37th president, according to Conrad Black, “Richard Nixon, under his father’s influence, was already interested in politics, and already a Republican,” by 1920 (11). Likewise, Nixon’s early interest in politics that would lead to his election as a California congressman, in 1946, and sequentially, a state Senator, in 1950. Like many other US presidents, Richard Nixon had a rich history in politics before winning the presidency. But unlike other presidents, Nixon already had controversy surrounding him before he ever reached the oval office. In 1952, Nixon was amidst rumors of questionable funding,
Former President Richard Nixon is most well-known for his role in the Watergate crisis in the early 1970’s. The Watergate crisis started in June of 1972, when the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters was broke into by members of Nixon’s re-election committee. The press took this breaking news and began to dig deeper into what the Whitehouse (President Nixon) was hiding. Over the next two years heavy investigations into the Watergate incident revealed that President Nixon did, in fact, ordered a cover-up to keep the incident under control. Fearing impeachment, President Nixon resigned his presidency in August 1974,
President Richard M. Nixon’s administration had to face many international and domestic challenges in the United States between 1968 and 1974, some positive and some negative. His achievements in expanding peaceful relationships with both China and the Soviet Union are contrastingly different with his continuation of the Vietnam War. In the end, Nixon’s scandals and abuse of presidential power caught up to him, and his administration did much to corrode America’s faith in the government.
Richard Nixon. If you didn’t already know, there is a very large amount of controversy surrounding this former president. A large part of this controversy has something to do with him being elected president in both 1968 and 1972. These many years allowed many good, bad, and controversial topics surrounding Nixon. Before we can get to all this controversy in regards to this president, we shall explore what Nixon did before his presidency and what policies he had while he was still in office, because it has become blatantly obvious that too many people in the United States are
Nixon was so popular with the American people that he went on to run for President himself in 1960, but he lost by a narrow margin to John F. Kennedy. After losing another minor election Nixon publically announced his political career was over. The Nixon family moved to New York during what Nixon himself later referred to as his “wilderness years.” In January 1968, Nixon decided to once again seek the nomination of the Republican Party for president. Portraying himself as a figure of stability in a time of national upheaval, Nixon promised a return to traditional values and “law and order.” Nixon shocked the world by not only winning his party's nomination but dominating the race and becoming the 37th president of the United States.
In 1960, Nixon lost the election against John F. Kennedy. Nixon had 219 electoral votes and Kennedy had 303 electoral votes(“Richard Nixon Biography”,2016). It was the closest election on record(“Richard Nixon Biography”,2016). Nixon took the loss well and handled the situation properly(“Richard Nixon Biography”,2016). In 1968, he became the 37th president of the United States of America. When he was elected, he was known to be unprepared for the presidency(Drew,2007). He had absolutely no clue who he wanted in cabinet or what he wanted to accomplish once he got into
When President Nixon's name is mentioned, Americans immediately remember the Watergate Scandal. President Nixon was the 37th President of the United States and served two terms. He won his reelection in 1972 with a decisive victory and has, so far, been the only President to resign from Office. The effects of Nixon's involvement in the Watergate Scandal changed the way the public and government perceived the President for the rest of the 1970’s.
On November 5, 1968 Richard M. Nixon was elected the 37th president of the United States. While in office Nixon dealt with an unstable economy and oversaw reforms in welfare, civil rights and more. In foreign affairs Nixon helped end the Vietnam War, reestablish contact with china and improve relations with the Soviet Union. In 1972 Nixon was reelected in a landslide victory. However, His undoing was already in the works. A few months prior to Nixon’s reelection a group of men linked to the Nixon administration were arrested in the Democratic party headquarters in Washington’s Watergate complex and what followed was one of the biggest scandals in presidential history. The Watergate scandal was revealed as a cover-up by the Nixon

“Dreamer, never let it be said that a dream is a waste of one’s time. For dreams are our realities in waiting. In dreams, we plant the seeds of our future.” In the books The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, Mr.Ferris and His Wheel by Kathryn Gibbs Davis, and The article Dream Big But Be Realistic for a Successful Life all have dreamers dreaming. Being a dreamer is more important than a realist because you can dream a better life for yourself, and you can do things you never thought were possible if you dream.
Sports blogs and news articles comprise the majority of my personal reading. Sports have captured my interests since I was a child, and I’m always trying to keep up with news be it local or international news. My favorite book of all time would have to be “The Outsiders,” since I think it conveys a powerful message for at risk youth. Personally, I define literature as any form of writing with intellectual value merely any piece of writing. In terms of critical thinking, I would define the terms as deeply analyzing information to understand it true meaning and purpose. The time I realized I needed to be more aware of my netiquette was in my first online class, during a history discussion, I misinterpreted one of my classmate’s comments as a

I was known for being the awkward girl from apartment ten. I would spend my afternoons watching all the boys playing soccer and all the girls playing dress up with their Barbie’s. They were enjoying their childhood and I longed for that happiness. Whenever someone knocked at my door, I dropped whatever I was doing and I would run to answer it with the hope that it was someone wanting to play with me. One day the manager’s daughter, Melanie, knocked at my door asking me if I wanted to play with her. My heart skipped a beat and I ran to my room and grabbed all my dolls my little arms could hold. My heart was filled with joy, I was ready to play whatever game she wanted.
