RICHARD NIXON 3 A Presidency Tarnished Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States of America. He accomplished a fair share of problems during his presidency but caused even more problems. He was vice president in 1952 before becoming president. Nixon’s presidency term ran from January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974. Richard Nixon had a strong family background even though he was a doubtful and indecisive president. In 1948 through 1950, Nixon received a role in the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC)(“Richard Nixon Biography”,2016). In 1952, he became the vice president of the United States. Before the election, he was accused of having a “slush fund”(“Richard Nixon Biography”,2016). He denied anything to do with through a speech on September 23, 1952.(“Richard Nixon Biography”,2016) He named the speech “Checkers speech” after his daughter’s pet Checkers(“Richard Nixon Biography”,2016). In 1960, Nixon lost the election against John F. Kennedy. Nixon had 219 electoral votes and Kennedy had 303 electoral votes(“Richard Nixon Biography”,2016). It was the closest election on record(“Richard Nixon Biography”,2016). Nixon took the loss well and handled the situation properly(“Richard Nixon Biography”,2016). In 1968, he became the 37th president of the United States of America. When he was elected, he was known to be unprepared for the presidency(Drew,2007). The election was the widest margin on record(Freidel and Sidey,2006). In a short couple months, Nixon was accused of being involved in the “Watergate” scandal(Freidel and Sidey, 2006). The “Watergate” scandal was a burglary in Washington at the Democratic National Election Headquarters in the Watergate complex (“Richard Nixon Biography”,2016). Nixon denied anything to do with the scandal(“Richard Nixon Biography”,2016).
