Intellectual Disability Reflection

Jane is a ten-year-old Hispanic fifth grader currently receiving inclusion support in Math, Science, and English Language Arts/Reading. Jane has been previously diagnosed with an intellectual disability (ID) and receives several accommodations within the classroom. Jane is a bright individual who benefits from inclusion support to help her receive the most out of instruction. In addition, Jane is a talkative individual with a tendency to lose focus during instruction, group assignments, and independent work. Jane has an innate curiosity about science and an immense interest in reading. Consequently, Jane has an intense need for approval especially when completing tests. There were many reasons I chose for observing Jane in the classroom. First, is Jane has been previously diagnosed with mild Intellectual Disability (ID). Second, I wanted to see how the accommodations as outlined in her IEP allow her to complete the same classwork as her same age peers. In addition, I felt it would be interesting to observe the effects of Jane’s mild ID on her social skills with her peers and her ability to function in the classroom with/without assistance. Lastly, I wanted to see how inclusion helped Jane to master grade level TEKS in the classroom. My first impression of Jane varied according to the many facets of her as an individual.
