In the authors’ studies, they found that the use of idiomatic communication related to solidarity and relational satisfaction. The objective of this study was to get a better understanding of the roles of idiomatic communication and its effect on relationships. The pilot study used 28 participants, eighteen men and ten women, who deciphered the instructions and completed a survey regarding idiomatic communication. The participants earned extra credit for their time in this study. Furthermore, the main study involved 275 students who were engaged in a romantic relationship from a large Mid-Atlantic university. The men and women who participated in this study ranged from ages between 18 to 41 years old with no more demographic information provided. There were three research questions that were used in this study that all delved into the functions of idiomatic communication in the de-escalation stage, the relational stage, and in relation to the gender of the relational partner. Although the information in this study was thoroughly explained, there were several limitations. Those limitations include fewer participants experienced a de-escalating stage. There are several different positive and unique aspects of intercultural relationships. Intercultural relationships allow individuals to understand other people of different cultures, ethnicities, gender and etc. It is interesting understanding other peoples beliefs as well as how they have lived there life’s. A positive aspect of intercultural relationships is the difference between the two people. I think it is interesting learning how other people think and how they were brought up. When you are in an intercultural relationship you get to understand how that person feels about certain situations that they have been through. You get to learn who that person truly is.
When addressing self-identification, some multiracial or biracial individuals do identify as being two or more races. Some identity as just one, or that they feel closer to a certain racial group. About 69% of Multiracial adults with a black background considered themselves as black/African American (experiences, social interactions that align them within the black community). While Multiracial Asian adults, with a white and Asian background, feel more connected to the white community than to the Asian community. Another group of multiracial individuals, are those that are white and native American, and around 22% say they have a lot in common with the in the US that is native America. And 61% say they have a lot more in common with the whites.
Anthropologists have always had their discrepancies with the word culture and its background significance. There have been numerous definitions that have filtered through the field, yet not one that everyone can accept or agree with. Franz Boas, an anthropologist in the early 20th Century, and his students, had a difficult time figuring out the objective of what culture is. In sixteen years of life, I have received an opportunity to experience different cultures, learning styles, and languages. To start of, I am an American since I was born here, but the reality is that I was raised in India. My parents’ main motivation for moving back to India was because they wanted us to embrace our traditions, and most importantly, value our family relationships. We relocated back to the US at the start of 9th grade. This transition was a huge factor for transforming me as a person. I am cognizant of the two systems, cherish both, and realize that these multicultural experiences have encouraged me to grow and mature beyond my years. The hurtful and harmful things that biracial kids hear and go through with their families is something that needs to be put in the same category with other issues that are presented in the forefront. A biracial acquaintance of mine, Evea has had her mother actually tell her to not be with a black man because if they had a baby it will get sickle cell anemia and die. This stereotype is commonly attached to the African-Americans and portrays a bad image. Also, whenever she would do something bad her mother would say “it’s because you have the nigger in you.” Statements like this would affect the parent-child subsystem and have a negative effect on how the child views the parent.
In growing up in the position of the ‘other’ in society, Smith provides an empowered stance of identity exclusively through the demonstration of cultural hybridity, as evidenced by Millat and his gangster crew, the Raggastani’s. As Millat becomes increasingly connected to a swaggering identity highlighted by Western popular culture, his sense of belonging becomes established with the multicultural mix of South Asian and Caribbean teens he hangs out with: “It was a new breed, just recently joining the ranks of the other street crews. Becks, B-boys, Nation Brothers, Raggas, and Pakis; manifesting itself as a kind of cultural mongrel of the last three categories. After reading the many articles on the notion of diagnosis and counseling with multicultural/ethnic patients, it has come to my attention that this focus is solely based on stereotypical attitudes.
