My current knowledge of Interprofessional Health Education is that it allows the people in the health care team to learn each and everyone’s roles, responsibilities, and limitations. It gives everyone an insight on how can they work efficiently and effectively so they can give the best possible care to their patients. Interprofessional Collaboration is when health care professionals work with one another to provide a holistic care management to their patients. It is my first time to have this kind of course where everyone can learn and experience interacting with other students of the health care team. I believe this is an important program where a student can have an in-depth understanding of the other professions. It gives them a sense of
Inter professional working is formed from different health and social care professionals working together towards a common goal to meet the needs of a service user. It is about developing relationships within and between organisations and services involved in planning and delivering care and support to the service users we support. By working collaboratively it brings together different types of professionals to share their particular knowledge, experience, skills, occupational values and perspectives to improve service
Professional programs educate students in their respective scopes of study so that they become experts in a specific health area. This can lead to confined patient care due to lack of understanding surrounding other health care professionals (HCP)1,2. The health care system is not compartmentalized, as seen through the collaboration many HCP’s engage in daily in their practice2,3,4. This concept of teamwork is paramount in providing a more holistic, patient based approach to high quality care1,2,3,4,5. One barrier to providing this level of care is the development of skills, attitudes, and understanding that helps foster environments for team based care1. To target this barrier, many educational institutions have developed inter-professional
Interprofessional working involves people from various profession and agencies working together. Interprofessional working is also a collaboration venture (Mc Gray 2006) in which individual that is involved shares the common objective of developing their mutual goals,
Interprofessional working is defined as ‘persons belonging to a profession, relating between and among each other, for the mutual benefit of those involved’ (Day, 2006), whilst attempting to improve the quality of patient care and unite the multidisciplinary team to focus on patient centred, excellent care (Goodman & Clemow, 2010). Interprofessional workers in the healthcare setting can include nursing staff from all fields; adult, mental health, learning disabilities and paediatrics, as well as the wider multidisciplinary team within the ward setting, such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists, doctors, podiatrists, furthermore, expanding from the ward setting to include community nurses, social workers, health visitors and midwives. Interprofessional working enables and encourages these professionals to combine their values and beliefs to focus on the patients and to deliver excellent, patient centred care. This therefore allows them to share a common purpose and goal whilst combining their knowledge, skills and resources as a team (Day, 2006).
Another important aspect of healthcare is effective interprofessional practice. This allows practitioners from different disciplines to work together to provide the best care for patients. There are four areas of competency in interprofessional collaborative practice. They are values/ethics, roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams/teamwork (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011). Each of these areas contribute to skilled interprofessional
As time goes by, people get infected with new diseases or current prevailing diseases. Consequently, new drugs are produced in an attempt to overcome these diseases, which results in patients with complex health needs. The complexity of the patients’ healthcare therefore needs to be addressed by more than one discipline. Interprofessional collaborative care is a type of health care that involves people from different professions working together and relying on each other to provide effective care to patients. Interprofessional collaborative care is important and predominantly a focus of the health care reform because it improves healthcare outcome for the patients and reduces disagreements between different professions. I was able to experience interprofessional care when my grandma was diagnosed with cancer. The physician and the pharmacist worked together in ensuring that she got the proper medication that would not have any side effects on her. In addition, the physician would call the pharmacy every two weeks to check on my grandma’s progress and to ensure that she had picked up her medications. Both my grandma and I were grateful because we felt that our needs were taken care of appropriately. Moreover, interprofessional health care is important in a curriculum because if helps the students to be better prepared to work as a team. This is achieved by teaching students about their own profession while receiving an understanding of the other professions and the roles they
To understand the term “Interprofessional team working” I have been working within a subset group where everyone has a different health profession background course such as child nursing, social worker, occupational therapist and myself as an adult nursing. On part 1, I will be discussing about themes social policy and culture and diversity. And on part 2, I will reflect my team working using different models and will mention our strength and weakness.
Interprofessional collaboration is an important component in any health care. According to the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) Code of Ethics, Individuals shall uphold the dignity and autonomy of the professions, maintain collaborative and harmonious interprofessional and intraprofessional relationships, and accept the professions’ self-imposed standards (ASHA, 2016). With this in mind, it is our duty as future speech-language pathologist (SLPs) to adhere to this principle. Clinicians should utilize every resource available to assist his/her client. This even includes if the client needs a referral to a different specialist.
The current state of IPE in Canada is one of continued progress. A number of organizations have been formed and new research publications have been developed. The Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative is structured to promote interprofessional education and collaboration and describes itself as a hub for Canadian interprofessional activity including IPE.18 The Journal of Research in Interprofessional Practice and Education19 is based in Canada and claims that it supports IPE knowledge development by being a source for sound theories, adequate data, and strong methodology and experimentations. The Centre for Interprofessional Education20 has a mission of becoming an international leader in interprofessional education and equipping
In my NUR-301 Class, I had the opportunity to practice on Interprofessional Education. Our nursing student team was partnered with first year pharmacy school students to learn about each other professions and to study on how we could work in a team of healthcare professionals to attain a common goal. As this was my first time experience to meet other students from a different department of Notre Dame of Maryland University, I was not sure what to expect from our discussions. Even if I have some experiences working both in hospitals and in a pharmacy, I was no fully aware of the responsibilities of a pharmacist directly to the patient or to the healthcare field specialists.
Interprofessional practice is a collaborative practice where multiple health professionals work together in health services to provide comprehensive services to their patients, families and communities to get a more effective result by improving the quality of work. The collaborative practise is basically used by the nursing team or other health care workers who are the member of interprofessional team. “A call for interprofessional team and collaborative practice development has been sounded across Canada because this model is viewed as the way to ensure that all professionals and providers can practice to the full potential of their role and competencies” (Potter, 2014). Interprofessional collaborative practice is a way to ensure that human health resources are used properly which help to decrease the duration time for achieving a quality care.
I am the type of student that welcomes rigor, so that's why AP courses are my favorite. Given that, I am extremely excited to experience an enlightening and rewarding course that deepens my love and appreciation for healthcare. On that note, I also understand that academic skills are only half of what it takes to be in medicine; you also need people skills. I’m hoping to improve my social skills by working with students with similar interests, build my communication confidence, and learn about and practice building consensus. Not only would this opportunity provide immediate application and enhance my potential in future careers, these skills will help me act as a visionary to help in communicating a more powerful future to others.
As you have stated, there a number of benefits to interprofessional practice and education. Therefore, by making interprofessional education a required class it would benefit many students who are just starting their careers. This way, students would be able to get a better idea of understanding not only within their own professions but those they will have to work with on a daily basis. Furthermore, IPE is being recognized even moreso and supported by many organizations, such as the Institute of Medicine. This notable institution also stated, “health professionals should be educated to deliver patient-centered care as members of an interdisciplinary team…” (Buring, 2009). Another benefit to having IPE in colleges and other institutions is
In this study from an academic journal, a team of nursing graduates examine the attitudes of undergraduate health professional students towards interprofessional learning within a large multidisciplinary undergraduate cohort. The experiment focuses on exploring and comparing the views of nursing, midwifery, nursing-emergency health (paramedic), medical, physiotherapy and nutrition-dietetics students. The study was based off of a set of topics which include Teamwork / Collaboration, Professional identity, Roles / Responsibilities, and if the subjects have interprofessional learning (IPL). Overall, students’ attitudes towards interprofessional learning were positive and all student groups were willing to engage in learning interprofessionally.
Interprofessional education (IPE) is an imperative form of educating a variety of healthcare professionals (HCPs). With factors such as an ageing population and an increase in the number of patients with chronic health conditions, patient care has become more complex, requiring HCPs to work together collaboratively. While many institutions initiate education for new HCPs with IPE as a part of existing curriculum, current staff working in clinical areas require continuing education to educate on how to work efficiently in the interprofessional team after they obtain their licensing. Continuing interprofessional education (CIPE) is an important part of ongoing HCP education to ensure HCPS maintain a continued focus and practice on working in an interprofessional environment. While larger tertiary centres employ educators with an ability to conduct CIPE, rural and isolated urban areas experience greater difficulty in managing CIPE, thus a distance education focus is required. An understanding of the efficiency of distance education in the CIPE setting, in addition to the most effective methods of providing CIPE is required for educators with an interdisciplinary focus in the rural setting. In this paper, we will examine CIPE, issues regarding CIPE in remote areas, and the use of distance education for CIPE.
