Interview Report and Self-Assessment
I interviewed Shawn Grimes (Mr. Shawn), the Executive Director of Digital Harbor Foundation. DHF offers after school programs that let students all the way from elementary to high school explore and develop technologies. The interview went well. I was calm and confidant, partly because I have known the interviewee for a couple of years, but also because I practiced asking questions beforehand.
Looking back at the interview, one of my weaknesses was that I sometime spoke little fast. It seems like when I get too excited I speak little faster than my normal pace. Usually in interviews, especially if I am the one that is being interviewed, I take few seconds to think and respond. However, when I

My other strengths in the interview were recognizing timeliness of the questions and transitioning to different topics when it was needed. I was also able to ask questions that unfolded wide rage of experiences Mr. Shawn faces as an Executive Director. For example, in a “professional world”, people, especially investors expect their clients/partners to dress up in a suit and tie and have short hair that fits the “professional look”. However, Mr. Shawn prefers dressing little differently, and his choice of hairstyle is not something a typical professional would wear. He explained, because of his spiky hair and a t-shirt with jean clothing, sometime people expects him to act “dumber” and “uneducated”, he added, once a investor asked him if he was a pirate. It shows that even when people do not know others, they tend to have perceived ideas just by looking at them. While Mr. Shawn did not say anything, his choice of clothing and a hairstyle gave certain ideas to people around him.
By conducting this interview, I learned a lot about the work people at Digital Harbor Foundation do. Although I participated in the program for two years, before the interview, I only knew what the students do in the program. However, after the interview, I also learned about the work staffs do, as well as the (communication) problems they face. Mr. Shawn emphasized that most of
Field Technician with over 31 years of experience in the HVAC industry and who better to interview than ones father. I started the conversation with an important question that will help in the future. “Knowing what you know now, what are some pieces of knowledge you think newcomers should understand?” Chris responded with, “Don’t become discouraged starting out because you don’t have all the answers to the problems you’re faced with.” Chris was trying to get at that many problems arise on calls from a day to day basis and when your new, you don’t have the experience to expertly diagnose every problem to which may become frustrating. My next question asked, “What is the most difficult aspect of your job?” to which Chris responded with, “The summer season is long and grueling and includes many hours driving between calls and the physical demands the job calls for due to the extreme heat and extended work hours.” My last question left on a positive note of, “What is the best aspect to your job?” Chris said, “Meeting a diverse demographic and helping out those who are in need keeps me coming back for more each and every day. Becoming skilled in what you do and also being introduced to new problems each day and being able to solve them reminds me of why I chose this career. Meeting people from all walks of life and being able to solve their problems for not only theirs, but my benefit is one
Shantelle Jones is a 17-year old adolescent female who was referred to this agency following a brief hospitalization for a suicide attempt. She resides in Rural, Michigan with her paternal aunt, Ms. Wilson, who has become her adoptive parent, as well as her younger sister, her paternal grandmother, and an adult male cousin. During her intake appointment, Ms. Wilson stated that she would like Miss Jones to be less aggressive toward her sister, less rebellious, and to become compliant with the medical recommendations of the psychiatrist who treated her in the hospital. Miss Jones stated that she would not like counseling, but if it was necessary she would comply because she would like to be less depressed and have less strife in her home life.
I conducted my informational interview on September 20, 2017 with an Ohio University graduate, Christopher Nason. Mr. Nason graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He currently is a member of a reverse engineering team at the Defense Logistics Agency which is part of the Federal Government Department of Defense. The company provides replacement parts and equipment for the United States’ Armed Forces. Chris’s job involves analyzing designs or schematics of older parts still used by the military. Since this piece may no longer be manufactured commercially, Chris’s team analyzes the data in order to identify the items so that they can be reproduced internally. His position involve a lot of research and project management.
The name of the interviewee is Matt Gunnell. He is a manager at the Jefferson City Apothecary. He has been instrumental to manufacturing medicine a playing a vital role in keeping the people of the Jefferson City community healthy and strong. I decided to choose Matt because he is a laid back and amazing individual who is very positive about life and encourage others to thrive and find their talent to make the world a better place. He also has a strong passion for his job and his role in ensuring the wellness of our citizens in this community. Also, I picked the Apothecary because of the vital role they to ensure our society have access to the medicine they need to stay healthy. It is one of the very few pharmaceutical businesses in town. It also offer pocket friendly prescriptions for some citizens that had to pay out of pocket.
Nonetheless, formal or informal interview, the answers that I received from Ricky were exactly what I was looking for, and seems to be a perfect fit for my research. Even
The design considered time limitations, thus the data collected from the questions had a narrow focus. For example, to avoid tangents topics during the interview(Robertson, Umble, & Cervero, 2003), direct questions were created. Questions were focused toward perceived benefits, attendance, and preference of community based verses a hospital based or telehealth programs.
The person I chose for this interview was my father, Vathana Ean. I chose my father because he has seen the changes that have happened in Canada for thirty years, he has seen the beginning and rise of technology, and has been using it for the past twenty years in his job. He has seen the slow shifts of society, the trends that have come and go, and the situations in the past arise again. My dad lived as a young adult in the eighites, an era showing rapid advanacement in technology and the rise of globalization. It was a simpler time, there was no internet nor cell phones, no computers either unless you were rich, and people were more connected personally.
For this journal, I will reflect on the three interviews and highlight the answers from each. Let’s take a look.
Throughout this semester this class has allowed me the privilege to get to know people who I would have never talked to on a personal level while also having the chance to advance my interviewing skills while getting to know them. Not only did these interviews and experiences display my strengths such as being able to adapt to certain situations but even more importantly it helped show me my weaknesses. After one interview and the next, I had to learn what role I had to play as within each interview I had to adapt to find my specific role as it varied from one to the next. Having the opportunity to interview a handful of people from the beginning of this semester to now has also taught me that the person you are interviewing can have a tremendous effect on if the interview goes successfully or not for reasons that I will elaborate on further in my paper. Lastly, one of the greatest lessons I learned about while interviewing people would be how to properly prepare to make sure the interview itself go as smoothly as possible. All of these factors have helped me grow in becoming a better interviewer and have helped me grow as a person.

2b. Develop a 10 questions structured interview for Ron Brown’s service center managers can use to interview experienced technicians.
I also learned that interviewing can be a powerful tool. It is imperative to include as many perspectives as possible in order to successfully change an organization. These interviews provide individual insight as to the current state of the establishment, as well as provides many possible solutions to common problems. Through interviewing we were able to note common trends in information to provide a more complete solution to the overall problem.
I structured this paper by giving you the insight about all the question I asked and the responses I received, ending it off with the list of facts I learned and knowledge I gained throughout the interview.
Preview Main Points: Throughout the interviewing process, I was able to gain insight into my career goals, the role of communication in education, and my own communication skills.
My culture, interaction with family and friends, and the various experiences from co-curricular and extra-curricular activities have enabled me to develop a multifaceted personality to tap my potential. In particular different activities, projects, assessment reports, and feedback from colleagues over the last few months at Babson I have better understood my strengths and weaknesses, and work style and leadership style. In this paper, I have developed my self-assessment analysis based upon qualitative and quantitative materials I have, and my experiences and exercises during this semester. I have identified three broad themes that incorporate several subthemes representing my current abilities, preferences, patterns of strengths, etc. (see appendix 1). Further, I have developed my action plan for the next semester to enhance my strengths and learn new skills, which are critical for my future career growth, to overcome my weaknesses.
