Interview summary for Peter Holloway, conducted on October 8, 2015 by Anita Sommer for the IRI Virtual Experimentation and Simulation project.
Peter Holloway is a Systems Engineer with Rolls Royce Limited. He leads a team of simulation tool developers that code, refine, and integrate existing modeling tools that are used in the preliminary design phases of their jet engines. The preliminary design stages involve identifying candidate engine architectures, preparing proposals, and presenting proposals to customers such as Boeing and Airbus. Peter has been involved in simulation for about ten years in a number of different companies and at various levels. His team consists mostly of domain experts that have lent themselves to programming, with between three and five years of systems design experience.
Rolls Royce has a culture of allowing its engineering staff to develop experimentation and simulation tools within their domain of expertise. Often however, these domain experts are not experienced programmers and the tools the engineers develop are used by only a few people within that domain. Peters team takes these tools, improves the code, making the tools more robust, and most importantly from a simulation point of view, making the different tools talk to each other in whole system simulation software.
Rolls Royce Ltd. uses virtual experimentation and simulation on both their products and processes because it helps the company meet cost and time objectives when delivering
However, one of the flaws of a well-developed HIL simulation is the amount of space needed for the computer components of the simulator. A smaller and easily transportable alternative was created to cope with this issue. Portable HIL was
Simulation based learning develops skills, knowledge, and attitudes in staff that otherwise cannot be experienced. The staff are put in the client’s position and give them a better understanding of daily struggles. Also puts the focus on the client instead of task completion. 14
This assignment is written in fulfillment of the MKT/421 class at the University of Phoenix. The assignment calls for covering each of the three major phases in the simulation and to describe:
The Course Project is an opportunity for you to apply concepts learned to a real-life simulation experience. Throughout the Course Project, you will assume that you work as a financial analyst for Aero Plain, Inc. The Course Project is provided in two parts as follows:
Many educational programs are now using simulation. One issue is how best to prepare instructors for this paradigm shift. Educators will need an extensive understanding of the tools available, the opportunity for their use, and the grade of their practicality. Additionally, educators need to know about the available resources that will develop a functional, meaningful, and practical simulation program.
Construct a statement to demonstrate your understanding of this simulation. For bonus points, you will be given an opportunity to share this statement with the entire class.
If given the opportunity to re-do the simulation, our top priorities would be to manage the allotted time more efficiently in order to improve decision quality, provide resolution certitude and ensure that each team member is adequately informed and prepared prior to meeting. During the simulation, we were given a finite timeline in which to analyze and input decisions; however, we failed to create a sense of urgency within our group, which encumbered the decision-making process and consequently, led to rushed decisions as time ran out. A team member should have been appointed as a designated timekeeper for time monitoring purposes.
Initially, our firm’s business position was at a healthy position. In the beginning of the simulation, our overall market share for the automobile industry was 28.2%; the highest in the market. We realized that our primary strength from product contribution came from our economy car Alec with 63.5% market share for economy cars, and from our utility car, awesome with a 48.5% market share for its vehicle class. Thus, it was evident what we needed to do; maintain high market share of our leading cars while conforming our least profitable vehicle class sustainably to coordinate to customer demand.
Hospitals are working towards a more team-based training. The last couple years most of my training has been in a simulation lab. I feel it improves communication, teamwork, reinforces skills and new practices. Hands-on simulation experience allows healthcare workers to get messy, make mistakes and sharpen problem-solving skills — with no risk to patients. As nurses, we collaborate with each other on a daily basis but we are trained and tested individually on our skills, theory, and practical situations. As healthcare evolves, stimulation labs should be part of all healthcare works training and testing, that way everyone is better prepared to handle real time events.
The simulation taught me the benefits of outsourcing, the advantages of an ambitious target scope, the relation between SL and TM and the importance of communication.
I appreciate the DVL review, time and effort, and I understand exactly the viewpoint regarding simulation versus technology from my engineering career as well. In this case, the benefit of Brightways simulator is akin to an architect planning a skyscraper designing and modeling the foundation and structural skeleton to handle earthquakes and hurricanes along with mechanical systems before the factors of construction are committed when there are prohibitive costs to mistakes, delays, or worse structural
Simulation is a computer process that gives a probable NPV or IRR for a project. All factors that affect the project’s returns are input. The computer then randomly selects one observation from each category. All of the observations are combined and the NPV or IRR is calculated from those figures. Simulation gives a range of outcomes as well as the probability of the outcomes. It provides the total risk level of a project.
The issues inherent in the simulation are not textbook problems or questions in which answers are cut and dried and determined quickly.
The important part of the simulation assignment is what you have learned from it. As such you will be required to reflect on the decisions you made and the outcomes.
During the business simulation course, we organised a team to become an automotive start-up company and introduced four new products, vehicle models, to satisfy the investors who invested us £500M. Each 4 rounds, we had entered board room to report our initial result and upcoming plans.
