Introduction The question that comes to mind when I think about teach is, “How do teachers keep students engaged in their learning?” When I say engaged, I mean students being actively involved, so that they are immersed in their learning. If students are not participating in the lesson, many of them will not retain the information they are learning. At the school I am doing my fieldwork, I see a few students every day who do not participate in the lesson. Instead, they are talking, playing with others, and staring off into space. The result is that they end up doing poorly on the mini quiz that is given after the lesson is completed. The researchers conducted the research by using two groups of high school students who attended instructional sessions to learn about consumer health resources and strategies to enhance their searching skills, or skills to find the result to fix a problem. One of the groups received passive instruction, while the other group used active learning. Active learning is when students are physically involved in the lesson or activity, and passive instruction is when the students receives instruction and interprets the information on their own, without help from the instructor. The researchers found that active learning had a better outcome, or scored better on assessments, than passive instruction. The second article I read, How to Keep Kids Engaged in Class, (Frondeville, 2009), is about keeping students engaged during the lesson you are teaching. The question that the article keeps bringing up is, “How do you keep students out of dead time?” Dead time is the lack of student engagement. The article gives a list of ten steps to do to keep students from experiencing dead time. The ten steps are, 1. Start class with a mind warmup, 2. Use movement to get students focused, 3.
