Introduction to TQM: -
Globalization has resulted in transformation of businesses from craft production to mass production. Due to globalization, there is fierce competition in the market where cost and quality are the deciding factors. Quality is something what the customer expects and pays for. And managing and continuously improving the quality of the product/process to maximize an organization’s competitiveness where all members of an organization are involved is called as Total Quality Management. It is a management approach to long–term success through customer satisfaction rather than short term improvements.

Hence, we’ll focus on strategic barriers to implementation of TQM. Strategic barriers to implementation of TQM are: -
1. Poor planning
2. Lack of top level management commitment
3. Workforce resistance
4. Lack of appropriate training
5. The inability to change the organizational philosophy
6. Lack of benchmarking
7. Team complacency (Cătălin, Bogdan and Dimitrie, 2014)

1. Poor Planning: -
Preparing a series of actions to achieve some specific goal is called planning. Effective planning reduces time and effort in achieving the goal and improves the quality. It is an Important technique for project management, time management and quality management. Whereas, failure to do so is called lack of planning or poor planning.
Importance of planning: -
• Increases efficiency: - Reduction in required time and efforts.
• Reduces risk: - Risk assessment/analysis will provide a risk probability and a solution to the problem.
• Proper direction and good control: - Planning dictates the boundaries and limits beforehand hence providing better control over the process.
• Assurance for achieving goals: - Setting the goals beforehand and dividing them into small steps helps in achieving the final goal.
• Motivation to achieve goals: - When the goals are set direction of the process is decided. When the target is in front human tends to work more efficiently and creatively.
