As an information assurance major, it was a challenging environment for me as an international student. The ultimate target will be successful completion of master’s degree with good grades. So I considered myself to focus on four primary areas to improve such as critical thinking, leadership skills, organizing the work and get involved. In achieving the target, I have structured a plan with three short term goals such as problem-solving technics, structuring the work and concentration. Along with short term goals, I have also structured three long-term goals such as motivation, socializing and writing skills. I always have plenty of books, scholarly articles and journals need to read for the understanding the topics and research writing. However, it was not easy for me to coordinate with other students in the class to discussion or debate over topics. When I analysed myself for the reason, I was drawn to a conclusion that I was lacking in “GET INVOLVED”. This goal can be considered as personal, behaviour and academic goal. This goal is important because, as a student participating in college events and activities always give an edge and more confidence. To achieve this goal, I have considered the strategy of socializing. Socializing involves in interacting with different people, participating in college events and participate in presentations. Socializing can be achieved in short time and give the better result. I have started participating in class presentations, class
Active involvement by students is important as they talk about the story, ask questions, and build expectations of the text. Everyone in the group simultaneously reading and receiving support from the teacher and other students is included in active involvement. Students engaged in conversation before and after reading in a social environment implements reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
Hill, choosing to communicate to others is one aspect and making the decision to participate face-to-face or via Distance Learning is another. According to your discussion post, Benjamin, classroom learning is effective because of the opportunity to talk to important people directly. In contrast, choosing to go online and conquer typing skills and grammatical dialect issues is a feat in itself. Surprisingly, learning via the Internet demands critical think skills and leadership qualities in order to get the grade to set you apart from [the] others; however, some students need more time to come out and be extroverted enough to communicate efficiently to superiors and maybe subordinates. Conclusively, balancing participation and motive are key components to most endeavors--especially your
John does not socialize with his classmates but he will communicate academically with one student. The seating arrangement was modified to allow these two students to sit adjacent to each other. These changes could foster social communication for John.
In this Report, at first I will present my initial personal development Plan, which was prepared at the beginning of the MBA program to improve upon my personal as well as professional skills, and regarding my expectations and goals that I would like to achieve through this program. This PDP is reviewed and assessed on regular basis during the course based upon the learning and personal reflection, along with highlighting my short and long term objectives after the MBA completion, to meet personal and professional target goals.
engage and learn even when not taking part in online discussions. The context of this
Finding people who share common interests and enjoy the same activities as yourself can often be difficult to find, but is necessary to have. Especially during college, a time where you are receiving your independence, but unsure of what that truly means, feeling lonely is valid and expected. However, college can offer many resources to aid you in these emotions, by having plenty of discourse communities you can join, or even offering you the opportunity to create your own. As quoted by Herzberg in The Concept of Discourse Community, “the idea of a “discourse community” is not well defined yet” (469). Despite the vague concept John Swales offers, he further goes on to elaborate on what six characteristics discourse communities can be identified through. A discourse community which one of my roommates participates in is the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA). The VSA is a cultural club for students at University of California, Davis, who identify as Vietnamese, and want to come together with others a part of the same background. The VSA is a perfect model of a discourse community, as it passes the checkpoints Swales provides to identify one.
Students will be able to engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions, on grade-level topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing
From this study, results of both success and failure were discovered and documented. From the aspect of success, the following results were found: First, classes that had online discussion helped students that would normally be introverts in a traditional class, to be active in discussions. Second, this type of class helped to improve
Technology is a part of everyday life and being integrated into more and more fields every day. Computers and the Internet are used in every aspect of our daily lives. With that being said online learning has become more and more prevalent. Most colleges and university have an online learning presence in order to extend the university reach and to help better serve the students who can’t make it into a physical classroom. In this article, Read Only Participants: Communication in online classes, authors Nagel, Blignaut, and Cronj (2009) takes on the argument that participation is a key reason for a student to be successful in the class.
On all college campuses, gender, religion, social economic and race diversity is also very important for effective academic interactions. Academic interactions refer to student’s involvement in the class room. This includes the way students review, analyze and study assignments given in class by the professors. It is the way students think and analyze information given to them collectively, as a group.
Desiring to have a better life in future inclines people to focus on their academic career. Schools, exams, busy schedules and a pile of work are quintessential this goal. Therefore, students who want to achieve a better future prefer undergoing hard work instead of engaging in social activities. However, social sides of college do not only occupy a big role, but also has plenty of benefits. Social life in college becoming increasingly essential in today’s world triggered an acceptable consideration: Social parts of college should be considered as equal as the academic parts because of psychological, social reasons and its benefits in terms of future.
I have since realised learning in the digital world is more challenging than it appears with feelings of isolation playing a vast role in my study to begin with. I found, during this time that I needed to participate in as much collaboration as possible and to converse with the class and my group to facilitate myself to learn as much as conceivable with also feeling connected to the class. Constructivist theorists believe a child learns best using collaboration with peers to build on their current knowledge. Vygotsky called this the "Zone of Proximal Development" (ZPD) and he came to this view by observing children who were tested on tasks individually compared to children who were tested on tasks in a collaborative way, he found that the progression of engagement helped to refine the thinking and make the learning more effective (Atherton, n.d.). I believe the same can be said for adults as well, especially after going from one online university where no group tasks were initiated to studying here were grouped collaboration was encouraged
Socializing influences academic performance. If a student is timid, he will not voice an opinion in class. Timid students prevent themselves from expressing their ideas. Socializing further involves how open a student’s mind is toward many controversial topics. For example, the student who communicates easily with diverse individuals will be more open to understanding other cultures.
The way I plan to make my goals become reality is by going to Purdue University and majoring in either IT management or computer system analytics. I have thought of doing both of these for many years now due to my father being an IT manager. Purdue is one of the very top IT and computer colleges in our nation. To become a student at Purdue and get my bachelors and then masters is what I hope to accomplish, so that I can fulfill my
During my third year in Wipro Technologies, I made a decision of pursuing Masters of Science to become more equipped in the technical field that I am already working in and then pursue MBA to become a Management Consultant. I adhered to my plan and completed my Master’s degree in Information Systems at University of
