Muslim women living in North America and Europe often face scrutiny over their choice to wear the veil, even though many Western people do not fully understand the practice.
The banning of the burqa has become an issue in many places, including France. The French Parliament has decided it is time to ban the burqa in public. They believe is a sign of the subjugation and submission of women to males. Some believe it is used to cover up abuse and they also believe it is unfair to the public that citizens cannot see the women’s faces. However it is unfair for these women to be banned from wearing what they choose as just everyone else does. The banning of the burqa should not be allowed because it is discriminatory towards Muslim women and violates their freedom of religion and their freedom to express themselves.
With so many religions, it may be difficult for some to understand what it means for Muslim women to veil. The purpose of veiling is a duty they are called upon and that is to obey their God. Many people believe in something, be it aliens, ghosts, the higher spirit, or their own God, one’s faith should not be judged. In addition, Canada clearly defined that it is unlawful to be a racist to one’s Religious beliefs in order to become a Citizen of Canada. It has been said, Gods and people can look through from one side to the other (Ellwood, Robert S., and Barbara A. McGraw. 5 print). Which could possibly lead for one to show respect to one’s faith and to understand their faith without
A whole lot of controversy and debate has been experienced in Quebec after the presentation of the bill. This recent debate is important because the consequences and implications of such laws should be evaluated thoroughly before being imposed to a population. It is also a subject that has a particular importance to me, considering that I want to be a lawyer later on and therefore I will face such difficult debate. Moreover, religious cases interest me a lot. It is important to know that veils are worn by certain women all over the world because of their religious interpretation of the hijab verses of the Quran in which God asks women to “dress modestly” (Stacey). The wearing of the veil has been made mandatory in some countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar. However, many women in America and Europe decide freely to wear the veil as a religious and cultural symbol (Stacey). Considering that the face-covering veils, like other Muslim veils, are part of some Muslim women’s religion, should the government have the right to demand its removal while one is receiving or giving public services?
Muslim woman express their beliefs by wearing a veil that covers their hair to the neck leaving their face uncovered. Some wear a veil as a identification and expression of their faith. Most women have the option to decide whether to wear or not to wear the veil. Some non-Muslims might believe that they are forced and oppressed to wear a veil is a common stereotype. In some parts of the world it is banned to wear one in government and educational buildings in Germany and France. In the United States some women are being discriminated for a piece of clothing.
When she stated, “They did not always have an opportunity to speak for themselves,” she was referring to the Muslim women in Islam dominated countries with people seeing them as victims of a patriarchal society where they cannot voice their opinions without having to suffer from a punishment. Also, because the images within the media showed women wearing burqas, which are also worn by Muslim women in America, people in the West see them as victims who are just crying out for help. It is not the social norm to wear a veil in the West because people believe in liberation when it comes to clothing, even if certain clothes may be terrifyingly revealing. They are unaware of the Islamic beliefs and that in countries, such as Afghanistan, the women accept the veil because it is part of their religion. Muslims follow rules and regulations that were divinely written within the Quran, and the burqa, which is considered to be a hijab (a veil/covering), is outlined within the Quran as follows:
I chose this frame in an interest of where it all began. During 1979 there was a Revolution and later was called "The Islamic Revolution". The veil represented as a religion, people protested against the veil and for the veil at the time. In 1980, schools forced girls to wear them, they didn 't know what it meant or what it was for. Also, they separated boys and girls from each other. One day they decided to shut all bilingual schools since the people who believe that it represented capitalism of decadence, they called this "Cultural Revolution".
Before explaining more about the French veil issue, we need to understand why it is happening. First off, the French veil is recognized as a law that begun in the early 2000s (Crosby). It was also the first major law in a European country to be passed. However, it main goal is to target Muslim women. In France, it is filled with a lot of immigrants; so the governments fear that it will affect their traditional culture. Every year, more and more Muslims come to live in France, as their “numbers increase in the past ten years (Honicker). In this case, they decided to pass the French veil law to ban Muslim women from wear their scarf in public, such as at school, shopping, etc. It made many women felt like their rights were taken, which
In today’s modern society veils are worn for mourning and even religious identity. Modern society has shed a lot of light on the Muslim culture tradition of having their women wearing veils. There are 3 main types of veils worn in the Middle East the Niqab, Burqa, and Hijab all these veils are described as different than the veil the minister wore. There has been a lot of argument whether the veil is worn by choice or by force many of the women do say it is a rather a symbolism of their devotion and piety it is a part of their identity. It could be a way for the Muslim men to hide the identity of the women so that they hide behind cloth it sort of closes of their ability to speak or be seen. The mourning veil that is worn to funerals is worn
Although, the veil represented a form of oppression for some women, it was the opposite for others and rather a form of religious freedom. By wearing the veil many women felt free and it was their form of expressing themselves. For fundamental woman, which are the older and conservative girls, wearing the veil was something that they enjoyed wearing and believed that everyone else should I also be wearing the sacred head piece. However, for the modern women, which was more of the younger generation, wearing the veil was something
Despite what backers of bans claim, restrictions on religious apparel unfairly impacts individuals trying to practice their own religions, and are discriminatory because the effects of these laws obstruct particular religions disproportionately. While governments do have a responsibility to establish and ensure domestic tranquility, prohibiting religious clothing isn’t the proper or effective way to do so. First of all, many currently enacted laws already authorize police and government officials to ask individuals to remove religious coverings in court and during traffic stops as well as in certain legislative buildings (Barker). Therefore, it is unnecessary to ban veils altogether when authorities do not require such an extreme step to identify
A Look Behind the Veil by Elizabeth and Robert Fernea states “ The thousands of words written about the appearance and disappearance of the veil and of purdah do little help us understand the Middle East or the cultures that grew out of the same Judeo-Christian roots as our own(para 3, pdf)”. Christians look down on Hindu and Islamic Groups by believing in a false sense of equality and treatment of others. This comes from how women in both cultures dress. Christian women are free to wear whatever they choose. Muslims women have the option to wear a scarf to cover their hair or hijab as referred to in Arabic. Christian culture tends to look at this as if it oppressive as losing a sense of fashion, identity, and expression. In reality, women have a choice whether to wear the hijab or not and if they do some places cater to their needs. A salon only for women called Le’Jemalink owned by Huda Quhushi is open to letting Muslim women express themselves in a space to get pampered and relax similar to things that Christian women do such as painting their nails, but making them okay to partake in in Islamic culture(Facebook, Now This,2016, Christianity video). Freedom of expression comes in different forms as others try to adapt the forms of western Christianity to fit in and educate others about other beliefs harmonizing for the greater
I was always interested on how Muslim women have to wear a burqa (full veil, where even the eyes are hidden), niqab (face veil) or hijab (headscarf), and some girls/women choose to wear the veil. There are many debates over if they should ban the burqa to think women are forced by men in their lives to wear it. A lot in Muslim countries, women lack in equality and even basic rights that other women in other countries take for granted; the burqa is one example of patriarchal control. Some women are forced to wear a burqa or niqab out of fear of being beaten, arrested or be killed, and some women choose to wear a the veil is their choice and their right.
There has been debates about whether the Islamic face veil should be banned in countries. The arguments that governments of countries that have banned the Muslim face veil (France, Syria, Netherlands, Spain, and Belgium) argue that the full-face veil is oppressive, degrading towards women, and goes against values of each country. However, many Muslim women believe otherwise and strongly disagree with the banning of the veil. I strongly believe that the Islamic face veil should not be banned because it is a complete violation of religious and expressive freedom and forces them to conform to an alternative culture.
As of 2010, France banned any article of clothing made to cover the face in public places such as shops, museums, and parks. The burqa should be permitted in France. The women who wear the burqa are following their traditions and religion. Wearing the burqa is their right, a right to live life like everyone else, as they choose individually on whether to wear it or not. This is a staple of Islamic culture. The banning of the burqa is violating women’s rights to expression and freedom of religion. People have challenged the ban however, there has been no change in the stance taken by the French government. There are both positive and negative effects regarding the banning of the burqa.
