Back in elementary school I believed that homework was pointless. I did not understand why we had to go to school for six hours a day and then were still expected to do work outside of school. What is the point? I often thought about this growing up but never did not complete my assignments, I was too worried about getting a bad grade. All through elementary school and some of junior high I had these feelings towards homework. Why is homework necessary? Why do work in school all day and come home to do more work?
Why is homework necessary? I remember asking myself this question a lot through junior high. Freshman year of high school I received my answer. Adrienne Rich writes “This is the experience of taking responsibility towards yourselves”
The debate on homework has come up once again because much research has shown that it’s not very effective. But first what is Homework? “At the beginning of the twentieth century the term homework… referred to labor done to pay in one’s home, and in particular to sewing and other manual work which filled the afternoons and evenings of many young children in large cities” (Homework Destroys Family Life). Homework was considered to be work the children did at home such as chores or actual job outside the home. Over time the term evolved when education became more important and child labor laws were passed to enforce children to focus on education instead of working. This debate is not anything new because this has come up in many centuries before.
In the beginning of the twentieth century homework was viewed as an exceptional practice that helped students learn through practice and repetition. In recent years parents and educators were concerned that homework is taking away from “social experience, outdoor recreation, and creative activities” These experiences are necessary to a good childhood. So, let’s think about it, is homework necessary for success in school?
Sometimes our parents have no time to help us because they have their jobs. Then if we can’t get any help it’s going to be either a late grade or an F because we can’t get a good grade without a complete assignment. Our parents could also have a goodnight sleep without having to worry about us failing their classes because of homework. Teachers will also gain out of no homework because they don’t have to deal with grading messy handwriting and awful grammar. They don’t have to stay up however long it takes just to grade all the papers their students. It’s especially hard for middle school teachers and up because there are so many kids and so many different classes. Teachers can go anywhere they want if their lesson plan is finished for the next day if there is no homework. They won’t have to deal with angry kids, teens and yelling at them if they’re failing school because of homework. Homework is keeping everyone up.
Everyday I wake up and get ready for yet another gruesome school day. As I do this, I find myself filled with stress, anxiety, and honestly just a pure hatred, for the massive amount of homework that is going to pile up as the day drags on. Is that really how it how it should be? I personally feel that students are being forced under a lot of pressure because of the overwhelming amounts of homework that is assigned to them. Before you begin with the eyerolls and rebuttals as to why homework is important to our education, let me just I agree with you! Homework isn't entirely useless, and it has many great qualities, but the immense amounts tend to be too much for us to bear. Too much homework can really be a problem for students, some have
I believe that teachers shouldn't have more rule over helping children do their homework than their parents or guardians. My reasons are parents have the ability to help the kid with emotion. My second reason is parents can help their own kids do their homework. My third reason is parents can make time and will make time.
Should homework be abolished? A question teachers, students, and parents have pondered for years. Going into my research, I initially believed homework had no benefits to students. Through various online articles, I have found valuable information on the importance and unimportance of homework.
Students shouldn't have homework because kids need family time or just a break to do whatever they want, then went they go to school they'll be energized. In class they should have piano music because it helps focus and if they have homework it should be go outside and play or bike because students need vitamin D. These are some reasons why students shouldn't have
I’m a freshman in high school and it’s not easy. I say it’s not easy because of the homework load. I’m glad I’m able to get an education but i don’t enjoy the homework. But with as much homework as I get, it teaches me how to work harder and get through things. Homework help teaches me how to be responsible. You know, get my homework done and in on time. If I keep on getting good grades, I’ll actually reach somewhere in life; school and homework matters. If I do well in school, I may actually become someone and get a dream job. But I’m still torn between becoming: a chef or baker; a nicu nurse or doctor; or a tattoo artist and professional piercer. There are so many choices but will I truly be happy with some of them? Becoming a doctor or a NICU Nurse really interests me.
In Texas, a young 2nd grade teacher named Brandy Young decides that homework is blocking children to activities that they actually enjoy. Children should instead focus on things they like. The only homework she gives is schoolwork not done during class. She says children should go to bed early or have a family dinner or something. I think this is a good idea because I do not enjoy homework. I think it keeps me from doing anything I like and often times keeps me awake because I have to do it. I really hate homework and think it is absolutely useless. Research has shown that students being allowed to read any books they want improves your brain smarts. It’s
Do kids really need homework? Most students would agree that homework is over-rated, time consuming and sometimes exhausting. With busy schedules to balance, homework can be very stressful. I think homework should not be mandatory.
Homework is something that students have to deal with for at least twelve years of their lives. Those twelve years do not include things such as colleges and universities. However, homework is not necessary for a fourth of the time students are forced do it. Homework is not necessary for students that are in high school. Homework in high school is just busy work, does not increase test scores, and has harmful nonacademic effects.
There are many reasons students should not have homework. Research proves the negative effect of homework. Knowing the negatives of homework can impacted how teachers hand out assignments. Most of the reasons that homework is ineffective because it can cause stress, easily distracted, and can put pressure to and you don’t get time with family, and physical activities. After reading this text readers should know way homework is bad for students.
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school.
The general arguments given by teachers and some parents are that homework increases the overall grade averages, sharpens study habits, and helps students become more prepared for college work. Along with that, it helps students learn responsibility for life in the work field of the real work. Although these arguments are valid, there are arguments against homework as well. Homework causes students to be stressed out when there is too much to be done by a certain deadline and takes away the free time of students. Some of the work that students are assigned isn't relevant to what they are studying. Worst of all, it causes that struggling student to lose interest in the study of that subject ("Students and Homework"). While it does have negative outcomes, homework also has it's perks.
Many students in school struggle to complete piles of homework assigned to them each night. Some wonder if homework is really critical to learning, and many wish homework wouldn’t exist at all. These people argue that homework is overwhelming and it takes away most of their free time at home and is just “busy work”. While some people may feel this way, I personally believe that homework is a key point of learning because it teaches time management and helps solidify what was learned during the day.
