Homework in School Systems Students, parents, teachers, administrators and other interested parties all seem to have strong and different feelings towards homework. Students complain that they have too much homework to complete outside of the hours they already attended classes. Students feel that they have personal lives to live and blow off homework while some parents and teachers believe that homework is the key to passing classes and preparation for college. This leads to teachers feeling pressured to push their students to succeed and this can easily get carried away. Parents and school systems still often discuss the topic of homework today. Should homework in school systems be stopped? The general arguments given by teachers and some parents are that homework increases the overall grade averages, sharpens study habits, and helps students become more prepared for college work. Along with that, it helps students learn responsibility for life in the work field of the real work. Although these arguments are valid, there are arguments against homework as well. Homework causes students to be stressed out when there is too much to be done by a certain deadline and takes away the free time of students. Some of the work that students are assigned isn't relevant to what they are studying. Worst of all, it causes that struggling student to lose interest in the study of that subject ("Students and Homework"). While it does have negative outcomes, homework also has it's perks.
The first reason that homework is not helpful is that it limits students’ free time. Students look forward to school ending and being able to relax and enjoy themselves. As the seven hours counts down, they have the afternoon and evening to wait for. However, if they have homework that night, all of their plans are ruined. For all of the work that students do each day, they deserve time to relax. No matter what work students get, it’s really bad. It forces them to work longer, and possibly through the night, which leads me to my next point.
BRUNSWICK, OH- The ball glides down the alley striking the top pin causing them all to ripple down. Brunswick’s bowling team's season is coming to an end and for the seniors their jersey’s put to retirement. Some seniors will continue to play in college but for most their final game is almost here.
Inspire the Fire. For me, my favorite part of Northwestern is the students, and the life that they breathe into this campus, so for me, it is only fitting that the slogan would center around my favorite qualities I see in Northwestern students. The first part of the slogan, "inspire", is because Northwestern students inspire me in so many ways. They inspire me with their kindness, their wit, their integrity, and their ability to grow. Being in an environment with smart, driven, and thoughtful people have challenged me to be a better person. The second part of the slogan, "fire", refers to the passion Northwestern students carry. On a daily basis, I meet students working hard to make it on Broadway, perform ground-breaking research, and make impactful social change in their communities. While our interests may vary, every Northwestern student works hard to achieve their goals. “Inspire the Fire” embodies both of these qualities, and Northwestern would not be the school that it is without either quality.
With the eighth graders at the High School, this year teachers have more responsibility to enforce the rules. But some people think they are enforcing them too well.
Many teachers in today's schools give homework out on a daily basis, and teachers assume that it is helping students learn the information taught in the classroom. However it is doing quite the opposite causing many problems for students. There are three major impacts that homework has on students, it causes more stress, it affects the student's family, lastly it affects grades and test scores as a whole. Homework has many more negative affects on students, families, grades, and goals. However, even with the facts teachers still continue to assign busy work which is potentially dragging students down rather than helping them.
Handicap students need to go outside to travel to their classes outside like going to trailer 1 and 2. Woodlynde School really needs to do something about this to help keep the handicap students happy and safe. This is why I been thinking about what will happen if it rains or if the weather is dangerous outside, those handicap students would need to walk through all of that to get to their classes. These students will be mad and angry about going all the way around the school to get to their classes, even the students that are pushing the students in wheelchairs outside to the classes would even be mad about walking through the terrible weather. But they know they are just helping a friend out. Even if the students in wheelchairs who moves around by themselves aren’t safe going downhill to get to their classes, it isn’t really safe.
Homework has dated back to the beginning of the American education system, and so has the debate of whether students should do homework or not. Over the years, there have been many different arguments as to why homework should or should not be assigned. Most of those arguments have almost always resulted in two main arguments, it takes too much time or it is a necessary supplement. Opinions on this subject has changed drastically over the years. This can be seen in the argument from Issues and Controversies, “The crusade against homework was so effective that, in 1901, California banned homework for students under the age of 15, though the state allowed a limited amount of homework in high school.” This was later repealed and during the Cold War era, homework was important to better understand our country and what it stood for as a way to combat communism in the US.
The negative consequences it yields come forth in multitudes. It gives teachers an excuse to not improve their teaching skills but rather assign homework to make up for squandered class time. Hours spent on homework leaves students with hardly enough time to spend on extracurricular activities, personal interests, family gatherings, and sleep. The stress it produces often leads to depression, physical health problems, unhealthy coping mechanisms such as drugs and alcohol, self harm, and suicide. An ample amount of research has been done that substantiates homework’s harmful impact towards a child’s educational progress and emotional growth, yet it is repeatedly ignored. For something with such hazardous risks to be viewed as an essential constituent of education is absurd. Our nation is essentially valuing education before life itself. Teachers should not be given the ability to deprive children of necessary developmental experiences by assigning extreme amounts of homework, and parents should not sit around allowing it to happen. In order for children to become truly educated they need to experience the world and what is has to offer, not be cooped up in their bedrooms for hours on end completing futile
For one thing, homework may actually make it harder to learn. Many people say that the more sleep you get, the more your brain rests. When you are rested, it is easier to focus on learning. On school days it is difficult to get the rest you need. Many students get up at 5:30 in the morning to get ready and make it to school by 7:20. After spending many hours learning in school, they return home to do homework. Some students also participate in sports after school that take up much of their time. By the
Homework should not be in schools for many reasons, mostly because we do six hours of school and then we have to do more work after school. What is the point of homework if you don’t learn anything from it? Doing homework is a great thing to do if you have no friends and want to stay home allday everyday, which by the way no one wants to do.
Well, with too much homework students would not be able to focus to perform well during the school day and it could actually harm their health. “Homework is important because it’s an opportunity for students to review materials that are covered in the classroom” (Akman). Others may conjecture that homework is great because students can review lessons and practice the material. “A recent study showed that teenagers who did not get enough sleep were more likely to develop insulin resistance, which is the precursor to type 2 diabetes” (Canapari). Factual evidence has shown that with high levels of homework each night students who cannot get enough sleep due to the excess of homework could actually cause the student to acquire diabetes. Homework is a downfall for students to endure in and can cause many levels of anxiety, stress and depression which do not benefit your
One reason why homework is not beneficial to children is the fact that it is challenging for poorer households. For example, the very well known education researcher, Robert Marzano states that homework is very difficult for children in economically disadvantaged households because the environment in those places make it nearly impossible to learn. This basically means that those students do not have the materials, or help, making homework way more challenging. Also, NEA Today quotes that the majority of students do not have someone at home to help them. Those parents likely are poorer, consequently making them have to work long hours, or many jobs. The “too much homework = lower test scores” text states that poorer households struggle so much that it can cause bad study
Homework is given to students so that they can retain information learned in school on their own at a later time. However, most homework given is busy work that requires memorization not analyzation. Homework does not require students to analyze their work but rather allows them to quickly transfer information from one sheet of paper from class to another sheet of paper for homework. This information is then lost when they move onto the next subject. the basic idea of homework is not an inherently bad one, however the way homework is being instated in our school systems is wrong. Not only does homework take up time in a students evening, but this time is not well spent! Homework is piled on heavily by each teacher in each subject and the quality
First of all, Americans today tend to believe that not having homework will be better for some kids and people. But, in some ways homework can benefit the teachers, children, and parents. It can help kids learn from their mistakes. It can also help the teachers and parents learn from their students mistakes too.
As it should be known students should not be assigned homework. Homework decreases the time students have for extra curricular activities. Students should have enough time to still be able to participate in after school activities. Learning from this we can understand homework is a long activity that is partly pointless. Coming from this we know homework is starting to cut into the students sports and clubs which is making students not have some of their own time to do what they like. Students should always every single day have some of their own time.
