“As of the most recent reported period, the number of internet users worldwide was 3.17 billion, up from 2.94 billion in the previous year” (Statista). The internet has grown to be one of the ultimate sources of information for individuals all around the world. The internet has helped people find information quickly, expand people’s knowledge on a subject, and improve our intelligence. Some people may argue how the internet is making us stupid, but others believe the internet is improving their intelligence. I believe the internet is a useful source of information and is expanding our knowledge of different subjects. For instance, when people need to look up information the internet provides an endless amount of answers to questions leading to an expansion of the person’s knowledge and understanding about the topic; therefore, making people smarter by giving them endless amounts of answers to their questions. David Weir’s survey was to prove Nicholas Carr’s cover story ‘Is Google Making us Stupid?’ wrong. Weir says that, “Carr’s argument was based partially on his own behavior: because he found himself skimming and browsing content online, rather than reading it carefully, he said, ‘I’m not thinking the way I used to’” (Weir). The Pew study had a purpose and was to prove this proposition wrong. The experts who participated in this survey uncovered many interesting perspectives. For instance, "Google allows us to be more creative in approaching problems and more integrative in our thinking. We spend less time trying to recall and more time generating solutions" (Paul Jones, University of North Carolina). Paul Jones talks about how the internet helps answer our questions, gives us more time to generate thoughts and ideas, and expands room for intelligence. Kudos to Google, and other informational guides for letting us embrace ways that flow smoother in our up-to-date world of technology. Only individuals can control their amount of intelligence. The internet helps to engage brain activity and exercise the mind improving brain function. We can use this convenient and helpful guide during times of question but as long as the person is retaining the information that is being searched then the internet is not making people stupid.
