What is the objective of higher education? It is to serve as a catalyst of higher existence that must be available to all, it should not only create people that can take advantage of lucrative positions, but people that have proficient life training. In our contemporary period, higher education has been construed to focus on specific careers by dismissing “non-relevant” information. Magdalena Kay framed this negative concept of relevance and other complications such as the gradual commercialization of courses, In her piece “The New Course”. Additionally, although not well represented in “The New Course” high tuitions costs are another failure of higher institutions and should be free with public support. These institutions of higher learning have failed to uphold the purpose of higher education and so have demonstrated that for most college is not worth it. Education used as an instrument for achieving higher actuality, has faded. Now the relevance of information has come into query. It is becoming a common belief that students should only attain knowledge that is directly related to their future career. The question of relevance itself is a awry concept “history marches on, and these issues change from year to year, or even month to month. Hence, the built-in obsolescence of relevance itself.”(Kay).
