A tragic hero is a literary character who makes an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and external forces, brings on a tragedy. In the play, The Crucible, Arthur Miller portrays John Proctor, the protagonist, as a tragic hero who has a major flaw—lust for Abigail, his teenage house servant. For fear of being exiled in a town where reputation is highly upheld, Proctor initially tries to hide his crime of adultery, but this affair triggers a major series of events in Salem, where unproven accusations lead to internal struggle and eventually to catastrophe.

I believe Troy was both the hero and the villain. Though Troy was a rude and mentally abusive old man. Troy was a hero, he did teach Cory and Lyons lessons that he had learnt over the years for example Cory wanted to be exactly like his dad in sports so he tried out for the football team, well troy didn’t like that due to his experience in sports that didn’t get him very far in life so he didn’t sign Cory to the football team which in the end helped Cory get farther in life. The reason that Troy is the villain is due to the fact that he was emotionally and mentally abusive, constantly cheated on his wife Rose, and constantly put people down, and due to his actions he lost a lot of family and friends. If we take a look at the work of well known Philosopher Aristotle, he clearly defined what is needed for a character to be considered a tragic hero. He pointed out 5 specific traits that the person must have to fit the role. They must have skewed judgement, which normally puts them in the position that they are facing. The character must have a realization during the story, there should be an event where they find out that their immoral ways have led them down a path of destruction. They should figure out their wrong doings on their own by taking the time to reflect upon themselves and understand the mistakes they have been making in life, and how to correct them. Throughout history, literature has always been filled with main characters possessing some tragic flaw. In Macbeth, Macbeth’s tragic flaw is his enormous ambition to become king. In Hamlet, Hamlet’s tragic flaw is his need for revenge for the death of his father at the hands of his uncle. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh’s tragic flaw is his need to be remembered. In the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, Beowulf also has a tragic flaw, excessive pride and the search for fame, which ultimately leads to his demise.

A Tragic Hero is a common figure in many of Shakespeare’s works. A Tragic Hero is usually a figure of royalty, fame or greatness. This person is predominately good, but falls from prominence due to personality flaws that eventually lead to self-destruction.

A tragic hero strives to do the right thing for everyone’s sake, but ends up failing, however Troy only cares about doing the right things for himself. In the play, Troy cheats on his wife, Rose, with another woman, Alberta. He says that Alberta allows him to, “be a different man” (pg. 1093) . As Troy and Rose are arguing about the affair, Rose is fighting for their marriage, while Troy doesn’t really care what happens to it. He then decides to continue to see Alberta, while he is committed to Rose. It is Troy’s conscious decision to continue seeing another woman. If Troy was a tragic hero, he would know that this action was wrong and feel remorseful, but Troy expresses no regret. Instead, he continues to see Alberta. Troy does not care about what is right or what is wrong, he just does what he wants. Therefore, Troy should not be considered a tragic hero because his decisions are made considering only himself, regardless of how the consequences may affect

The tragic flaw of the hero leads to their demise or downfall that in turn brings a tragic end. Aristotle defines a tragic hero as “a person who must evoke a sense of pity and fear in the audience. He is considered a man of misfortune that comes to him through error of judgment.” The characteristics of a tragic hero described by Aristotle are hamartia, hubris, peripeteia, anagnorisis, nemesis and catharsis which allows the audience to have a catharsis of arousing feelings.
