Pearl Harbor One quiet and peaceful morning, Japan turned Pearl Harbor into “a date that will live in infamy” ---President Roosevelt. BOOM BOOM BOOM! That was the sound the residents of Pearl Harbor woke up to -Japan was bombing Pearl Harbor. Nothing was going to stop Japan from finishing their attack. Pearl Harbor was the worst attack in American history due to Japan’s strategy, the battle, and the United States retaliation. (www. history.com). Isoroku Yamamoto was the man with the plan. It was his idea to bomb Pearl Harbor. He made sure it was a surprise attack. He knew it was the only way to destroy the U.S. Naval fleet. He predicted that if Japan was at war with the U.S.
“A date which will live in infamy” a famous quote that was said by President Franklin D. Roosevelt when America was attacked. On December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor was bombed and shaken up by the Japanese fighters. More than 2,300 americans were killed that day. Men were stuck inside ships and drowned. This day was a turning point for the U.S. It caused America to go into war, which helped the economy by opening jobs up, and we got back at Japan.
“A date which will live in infamy (Roosevelt).” There were three part to this attack, what lead to the attack, the actual attack and the aftermath. The world was at war and the United States didn’t want to get too involved until the attack happened. During the attack on Pearl Harbor the United States made the decision to join the War. The United States joining the war brought the most crucial years to follow along with the dropping of the atomic bomb. The attack on Pearl Harbor was the beginning of the a very long war that cost the lives of many people but brought a nation together.
Introduction. I chose this battle because I had been hearing about the attack on Pearl Harbor, but I did not know much about it. This paper talks about the countries that fought in this battle, where the battle was fought, what the geography was like during the battle, what the weather was like, what happened during this battle, how many casualties occurred, other things I learned about the battle, who won the battle, and how the battle was important to WWII.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his war speech and asserted December 7, 1941 as, “a date which will live in infamy.” The United States’ naval bases stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii were struck by Japanese planes intentionally and promptly. The news of this attack on the Pearl Harbor shocked the world. It was devastating to the nation that were still in the throes of depression. Witnesses of this event painted a portrait of a nation stunned, but determined to rise again. The United States’ government had not disclosed a Pearl Harbor story to the public--that the U.S. had failed to act on advance information about a planned Japanese attack. Japan 's move against the United States was audacious enough to be considered no more than a slight possibility, although the potential for an attack had been widely discussed.
Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese Combined Fleet, was the principal architect of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Yamamoto himself was personally opposed to war with the UNITED STATES, but knew that Japan’s only hope of success would be to achieve a quick and decisive victory. Japan needed to knock out the UNITED STATES Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. (Pearl Harbor’s History, Filmstrip)
On December 7th, 1941 Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan. On this horrific day over 2,400 Americans were killed by the bombs that the Japanese had dropped. A month preliminary to the attack, Japan sent a plenipotentiary to Washington to arrange the nation’s expansions in Asia. Although if the United States didn’t accept this aggression, Japan was ready to launch a surprise attack. President Roosevelt launched bombs to the Philippines between the Japanese and Dutch oil fields, before they had sent the plenipotentiary. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was over seven hours long, they were 353 Japanese fighter planes, torpedo planes launched bomb. They were a bombing blitz that destroyed 188 U.S. aircraft, had sunken 4 U.S. Navy battleships, and killed more than 2400 Americans with an additional 1,100 injured.
On December 7, 1941 Japan stealthily attacked the U.S. Naval base located at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii resulting in many casualties. This IMC plan will outline the objectives, strategies and tactics in order to promote awareness of the attacks as well as develop positive community involvement.
On December 7, 1941 -- the day that will always be commemorated as “the date which will live in infamy” by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt -- the Japanese unexpectedly attacked the United States’ naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This crippling attack caused many American casualties, and American citizens quickly became filled with fury and abhorrence; the detestation that swallowed the hearts of the American citizens was shown through President Roosevelt’s expeditious appeal to Congress to declare war against Japan. The attack on Pearl Harbor was an unforgettable day in history and directly affected the United States involvement in World War Two and the patriotism of the United States’ citizens.
“A date which will live in infamy” . This is a quote said to congress by the Commander- in- Chief Franklin Roosevelt. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor Roosevelt asked congress to declare war on Japan. Pearl Harbor was a surprise to the United States, a great plan to the Japanese Empire, and a gateway to World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor took a toll on countries all over the world. That day in 1941 has been and forever will be the most infamous act of the Japanese Empire.
“Yesterday, December seventh, 1941, a date which will live in infamy, the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. We will gain the inevitable triumph, so help us God” (Franklin D. Roosevelt). Franklin D. Roosevelt said this during his speech on December 8, 1941, addressing the Pearl Harbor attack. During his speech he explains how the United States of America will defend itself but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us. Furthermore says no matter how long it takes to overcome this invasion, the American people will win through absolute victory (“American Rhetoric”). On December 7, 1941, a total of 18 naval vessels heavily damaged or destroyed, 188 planes destroyed, and over 2,000 servicemen killed. That Sunday morning, began as a normal day for millions of Americans, but suddenly everything changed. As the news flashed from coast to coast, the bombing of Pearl Harbor mushroomed into a natural disaster. People could scarcely believe the reports pouring out of their radios. How could it have happened? Who was to blame? What could be done to guard against surprise attacks in the future? There were no easy answers, no quickly forged consensus (“Butow”). Pearl Harbor could have been prevented if
Pearl Harbor came as a shock to all citizens across America, devastating the lives of many. Pearl Harbor, Hawaii is the home to the United States Naval Base, and was considered to be
December 7,1941, began like any other day. The sun was warm and shining bright in Pearl Harbor. Most people were relaxing, sailors on the decks of their ships enjoying the beautiful day. But before it was over ,this day was the day that was going to make American hearts ache for years. The attacks bought in new changes for everyone in America, to the economy to the way people felt about America. It was the day the United States was attacked and bought in a World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor made the American people realize they weren 't invincible to these type of foreign attacks.
Pearl Harbor was the largest concentration of the United States forces in the Pacific. Pearl Harbor is located in Oahu, Hawaii. Around Pearl Harbor the amount of protection was not high. Work began to dredge the channel and improve the harbor for the use of large navy ships. Congress authorized the creation of a naval base at Pearl Harbor in 1908. By 1914 other bases housing U.S. Marines as well as Army personnel were constructed in the area around Pearl Harbor. Schofield Barracks, constructed in 1909 to house artillery, cavalry and infantry units became the largest Army post of its day. There were about one-hundred ships anchored at Pearl Harbor. There were about three-hundred aircrafts in Pearl Harbor.
One day after the attack on Pearl Harbor Franklin D Roosevelt addressed Congress.Three days later,Germany and Italy,Japanese’s allies, declared war on the United States.
Japanese messages giving information about the attack. Some other historians also claim that the United States government, including the president at the time Franklin D. Roosevelt, knew five days in advance that there would be an attack on Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands. “Toland concluded that Roosevelt must have known that an attack was forthcoming and that he allowed it to occur in the belief that a surprise attack would arouse the nation. But like the many other writers who have made the same argument, Toland was unable to produce any direct evidence of Roosevelt's knowledge of the planned attack.”
