Music and Adolescence Most adolescents turn to music as a way to express their emotions, and to escape any problems occuring in their lives. Adolescents have troubles with grades, relationships, self- images and many other issues that music helps them cope with. There are numerous songs dealing with love and relationships that are filled with emotion and can be very relatable. Jess Glynne, Macklemore and Dan Caplen sang the song “These Days”, about a hard breakup that was necessary to move on with their own lives. In the song “These Days” the most apparent concept is identity crisis. Caplen sings, “Leaving to find my soul, told her I had to go”, giving reason of why he had to leave. This “girl” he is with, has blocked him from finding and loving himself, which is a very current issue in adolescent relationships nowadays. When you allow yourself to become so invested in your partner, you start to lose sight of who you are as a person. The issue with that is sometimes the person doesn’t realize that it is an issue, and if they do end up breaking up, …show more content…
In many cases, the relationship ends because someone’s identity is lost, and they don’t know who they are or who they want to be. In addition, the issue of indecisiveness accounts for teens not knowing what choice is right or wrong for them. Rationalization occurs in relationships after a break up and someone doesn’t want to expose all their feelings in fear that their self esteem will lower. All three of these concepts are parts of the adolescence period, and play a huge role on what choices teens make and how they act. For adolescents, music is often turned to as way to escape, relax, and sometimes just to listen to a song which they can relate to. Music is a way for teens to realize that they are not alone with whatever they are going through, and that there will be something bigger and better for
Music has played a major role as an agent of socialization in each of my 4 decades. I know and hope that it will continue to do so. During each period music has affected my personality, shown my personality, affected my perceptions and helped me to cope with growing and changing as a person. My Looking Glass Self has compared the person in song and possibly the singer themselves to myself to gain perspective of who I was at each time. I am going to discuss each decade with the thought of how music was an agent of socialization in each.
Some studies have reported that adolescents use popular music to deal with loneliness and to take control of their emotional status or mood,” (Impact of Music, Music Lyrics, and Music Videos on Children and Youth). Similar to Mildred, studies show that many kids spend a lot of time listening to music. Mildred rarely took out her seashells out of her ears, she was always listening to the music. Children are also showing signs of relying on music to pass the time and hide their negative feelings about life or the hard situations that they may find themselves in. “A study with 100 fourth- through sixth-graders revealed that 98% of these children listened to popular music, 72% of them on “most days” or every day. Furthermore, it has been reported that children 8 to 10 years of age listen to music an average of 1 hour per day,” (Impact of Music, Music Lyrics, and Music Videos on Children and Youth). This takes away from the time they could spend with their families, friends, or other jobs they are responsible for. Mildred is known for not spending time on a variety of activities, she mainly just listens to music and watches the parlor walls. Music seems to have a significant effect on the variety of activities the person participates in; children and young people nowadays seem to
This reference shows how music lays a foundation of teenage values beyond school or parental teaching. A musical artist can influence a young mind by the chosen lyrics with greater effectiveness than formal education. Music can control or enhance moods. A good mood can get better or a bad mood can be worked through with the choice of music. A bad mood can also be enhanced by lyrics about suicide or violent behavior. Teens can also use music to gain information about the adult world, to withdraw from social contact, facilitate friendships and social settings, or to help them create a personal identity. (O'Toole, 1997)
We all cope with pain differently, but we often have one solution in common: over thinking. Where did I go wrong? Why did this happen? Is it really my fault? All of these questions echo through our mind when something in our lives turns sour; especially when it is a relationship. Love and loss can lead to loneliness. When combined, these ideas become the ultimate weapon to destroy someone from the inside out. As a result, we long for reconciliation and answers from the person with whom we’ve split. Numerous songs have been written based off of this premise. Elvis Presley’s popular hit “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” captures the ideas of love, loss, longing and loneliness. Presley presents himself in a vulnerable state and puts his inner thoughts into melodic verses. He questions if his sweetheart is just as devastated by their separation. Presley’s unique comparisons
Music is not just music, or just a source of entertainment; rather music is “a major force and presence in contemporary American adolescence” (Christenson and Roberts 11). Besides the belief that music is just music, another popular belief is that, “Nobody pays attention to lyrics” (Christenson and Roberts 7). This assumption is not completely true or false. Lyrics are often learned accidentally during the listening experience, but almost every adolescent has a favorite song that he or she can recite word for word. Therefore, whether the learning of the lyrics is intentional or not, adolescents do learn
There is no disputing that society is influenced by its choices of entertainment. Some ways in which people are influenced are positive, but others are harmful. In the society we live in, the harmful ways always outnumber the positive. If we gravitated toward the positive forms of entertainment a little more often than the negative, then our society would have fewer problems. Popular music has a negative effect on society and endorses a lack of creativity.
What does Paris by The Chainsmokers, Say Something by A Great Big World, and Here Comes Goodbye by Rascal Flatts all have in common? They are break-up songs. Each in their own way, all of these songs are about pain and sadness caused by break-ups.Some of these songs are meant to cause an already sad person to cope with their sadness by pushing them farther into “The Abyss”. A few are meant to touch on the happier memories of the relationship giving someone hope that they will love again. All of these songs, through their lyrics, structure, and rhythm, are all meant to cope with a person's sadness that results from a break-up.
Music has more of an influence on the people in the twenty-first century than it ever has before. Teens, especially, are surrounded by some sort of it in everything they are around or do. Many disagree on how music impacts one’s mental state and behavior; however, all agree that the impact depends on how the listener feels before and how they allow it to influence them.
All of the songs on this album relay different messages to listeners. Most songs contain a lot of pathos, call to action and more. Pathos is really prominent in certain songs such as Sorry, Formation, and Freedom. An excerpt from Sorry says: “Now you want to say you 're sorry/Now you want to call me crying/Now you gotta see me wildin '/Now I 'm the one that 's lying/And I don 't feel bad about it/It 's exactly what you get.” This displays the emotions after getting out of a relationship or during the struggles of it. Other lyrics from this song that display this
All music has changed tremendously throughout the years. Each generation has several specific songs that defines that generation. Every song has different lyrics that describe the emotions that the artists are feeling. The songs connect to each individual in many different ways. Lyrics to a song is what makes music wonderful. Each song touches someone through ways like teaching a life lesson or touching your heart. Every generation has music that impacts the world by motivating people to do certain things or defines a person’s personality. Each generation has music that defines the generation.
Many young people seek to use music to help themselves be more accepted in the world, so that they can be easily categorisable in the mainstream. Many girls of ages 9 13 may have an interest in a popular boy band' of the time. This is an example of how, though a girl's identity could be partly influenced by such a band, ultimately, their music and appeal is limited in scope because after four or five years the band is likely to have split up. The media promotes such a band because it targets girls who are seeking to find an identity and because these years
Music is one of the greatest human creations (DeNora, 2000). It plays an integral role in human society worldwide irrelevant of race, gender, age, wealth or well-being (Kemper & Danhauer, 2005). Indeed according to Batt-Rawden (2010), playing different music in diverse situations can introduce listeners to the desired and relevant atmosphere. In most circumstances, music is played to entertain people, but it can also form part of an accompaniment in sad situations. Music is often the fulcrum that influences the listener by creating a unique ambience and atmosphere (Bernatzky, Presh, Anderson, & Panksepp, 2011). Chamorro-Premuzic and Furnham, (2007) adds that music can be a medium to enhance communication,
First, the music video connects with teen girls by using lyrics that question staying in these harmful relationships. Shawn Mendes sings, “And you’re spending all your time in this wrong situation”, to motivate teen girls not to waste their time in those harmful relationships. These motivating lyrics help to encourage teenage girls to remove themselves from these relationships. When Shawn Mendes sings about how she should not waste her time in the wrong relationship, it encourages teen girls to get out of those bad relationships. Second, the music video relates to teen girls by using touching lyrics so that teenage girls realize the harmful relationships, they are in. Shawn Mendes sings the words, “But I can see it on your face when you say that he’s the one that you want”, as encouragement for teen girls to do what they want and leave a relationship if they feel unsafe or do not want to be part of it. Again, these compassionate lyrics inspire teen girls to disconnect harmful relationships, because that is what they should want. When Shawn Mendes sings about how it is obvious that the girl feels unhappy in the situation, it relates to other teen girl’s emotions and interests them to leave those situations. Through the use of concerning lyrics, of questioning and emotion the music video encourages teenage girls to leave their harmful relationships. Shawn Mendes’ “Treat
These three songs are very popular in pop culture and country, primarily aimed at girls in their teens and young adults. The purpose of this paper is to prove that these songs in the music industry mold the point of view that teen’s have regarding love.
The relationship between music and society is an exceptionally powerful and crucial one. In some cases, this relationship is viewed as one that is harmonious and beneficial to large communities of people. However, that exact relationship could also be scrutinized as one that is extremely discordant to other communities. Green Day happens to fall precisely in the middle of that musical spectrum, depending on who is asked. Regardless of opinion, songs are much more than just music and are essentially retained as pieces of history. These songs help showcase the trends, behaviors, and even struggles of different time periods. With that being said, one may ask “What all did the musical group Green Day contribute to society?”.
